Appearance

  • Expression and bearing: Cool, detached eyes contrasted with a commanding presence likened to an unsheathed blade 2.
  • Build: Appears thin and frail despite considerable physical strength 14.
  • Clothing: Debuts in light blue clothes; receives a pale yellow League cape upon becoming a King. For his match against Will, he wears gray clothing with a striking cape 2 3 22.

Personality

Gongping is ambitious, methodical, and intensely committed to improvement. He views becoming a regional King as a route to stronger opponents rather than an endpoint. He records battle details, continually revises his training software, and prepares concealed reinforcements before dangerous operations 2 8 9 10 28.

His ruthlessness in battle coexists with pronounced affection for Pokémon. He sincerely apologizes when Swampert accidentally injures Tentacruel, personally massages his partners, and treats both his own Pokémon and an opponent’s after a match. Having lived closely with Pokémon, he can no longer bear to eat them 3 5 11 14.

He refuses to tolerate the League’s accommodation of Team Rocket infiltrators and retaliates when others deliberately scheme against him. However, he also accepts responsibility for the consequences of his own battles: during the Seafoam Islands collapse, he remains behind to cover the residents’ evacuation 5 11 45.

Trip remembers him as a sunny, cheerful boy whose personality changed greatly after their earlier travels. Gongping’s private life reveals loneliness and unresolved grief surrounding Rosa’s disappearance, although he remains warm toward friends, fans, and Pokémon 19 28 47.

Background and History

Early travels and the Hoenn disaster

By his debut, Gongping has spent fifteen years in the Pokémon world. He began his journey with Tepig, while Rosa and Trip had Snivy and Oshawott respectively. Rosa initially handled many of his everyday needs, including chores he had neglected to learn himself 2 28.

After finishing in Unova’s top eight, he traveled through Sinnoh, Hoenn, and other regions, including a brief stay in Kalos. During their Unova travels, Gongping and Rosa also took Lu along at his parents’ request to help him overcome emotional barriers 2 33 39.

A disaster in Hoenn became a major turning point. Gongping rescued an injured Marshtomp whose parents had died, treating him despite his own injuries. Marshtomp became his Swampert and resolved to remain beside him. Gongping also began persistent physical training after the disaster 44.

Rosa later went missing. Searching for her was one of his reasons for coming to Kanto, while becoming a King gave him access to information and contacts unavailable during his earlier investigation of the Kamiya Foundation 20 31.

Becoming the Sandstorm King

Gongping entered the contest for Kanto’s vacant Elite Four seat after winning the Indigo League and building a fifteen-match winning streak. His Swampert overwhelmed Liu Ping’s team, defeating Golduck and ultimately Blastoise. The victory secured his appointment, but the severity of the injuries inflicted provoked spectators who regarded his style as that of a butcher rather than an elegant Trainer 2 3.

The League immediately made its youngest Elite Four member a publicity representative. His first exhibition opponent, Shali, deceived him into drinking freshly squeezed Bounsweet juice and used the footage to encourage calls for his replacement. Gongping defeated her in their match, while Lorelei exposed Shali’s own connections to Bounsweet-juice production and reversed the scandal 4 5 6 8.

Mt. Moon investigation

Assigned to an anti–Team Rocket operation with Bruno, Gongping investigated thirteen bases at Mt. Moon. The raids yielded little meaningful evidence, and he noticed that favorable coverage of the operation came from a media company under Silph Co. He then confronted the six investigators attached to his team, exposing them as hostile operatives 8 9 10.

Having already concealed more than twenty Ground-type Pokémon nearby, Gongping overwhelmed the group through coordinated positional attacks, including eight simultaneous Earthquakes. Five operatives were left seriously injured; the remaining woman escaped through Teleport reinforcements. Gongping condemned the tacit arrangements that had allowed Rocket infiltrators to remain inside the League’s operations 10 11.

Gym assessments and the search for Rosa

During Cerulean Gym’s assessment, Gongping’s Alolan Sandslash drew with Misty’s Staryu, and his Scizor defeated Dewgong. Misty nevertheless demonstrated enough ability to support the Gym through its demotion crisis 14 15.

At a new-model Pokémon Center in Yinhua City, Gongping met Giovanni and exchanged training knowledge with him. Recognizing signs of the New Island incident from his previous-life memories, he tried to occupy Giovanni and prevent him from personally moving against Mewtwo. The two effectively held each other in check while Team Rocket mobilized 17 18 19.

Gongping then pursued someone who appeared to be Rosa, only to discover Mew. Its ability to reproduce her appearance convinced him that Rosa’s travels had indeed brought her to Kanto 19 20.

Will’s match and the academy

Gongping represented Kanto in a six-on-six match against Johto’s Psychic-type King, Will. He brought both Tyranitar and Hippowdon to maintain Sandstorm, then revealed Lileep’s unusual moisture-control abilities against Mega Gardevoir. The battle exposed shortcomings in the Dream System’s calculations, prompting immediate upgrades 22 23 26 28.

Lance subsequently appointed him vice principal and director of discipline of the International Police Academy’s Kanto Branch, while also assigning him strict responsibility for future Gym assessments 28.

Lu’s challenge and the Cinnabar massacre

Lu, resentful over Rosa’s disappearance, specifically challenged Gongping after winning the regional tournament. Gongping recognized his former traveling companion and defeated him, but learned that a woman in a Pikachu mask had encouraged Lu’s suspicions and used the challenge to keep Gongping away from Cinnabar Island 33 35 36 37.

The diversion enabled a massacre at Cinnabar Lab despite Gongping having stationed four Pokémon there beforehand. He returned with Lance, buried the dead Pokémon with Tyranitar, and used a tracker planted by Swampert to pursue the attacker toward the Seafoam Islands on Mega Salamence 37 39.

Seafoam Islands and its aftermath

At the Seafoam Islands, Gongping thanked Gary for destroying a device that threatened the islands with the Distortion World. He then confronted the Yin-Yang-Faced Freak, questioned his connection to the Kamiya Foundation, and deployed his complete core team 41.

Their battle devastated the main peak. After Swampert’s finishing assault defeated opposing Pokémon, Greninja rescued its Trainer from the rubble, killed him, and departed independently 44.

Gongping stayed to contain the ensuing collapse and organize an evacuation to the Western Island. When his sand defenses failed, Articuno froze the mudslide, rescued him, and healed his injuries during the flight. Residents’ recordings of his actions subsequently improved his public reputation 45 46.

The incident also exposed political constraints within the League. Gongping rejected a proposed exchange of silence for Lu’s pardon, insisting that Lu should understand the harm he had caused rather than become a bargaining chip 46.

Abilities and Skills

Sandstorm tactics and coordinated combat

Gongping specializes in coordinated formations rather than relying solely on individual matchups. Tyranitar and Lileep form the foundation of his single-core system 39 41 47.

  • Sandstorm Purgatory: Lileep’s moisture absorption combines with the team’s sand control to turn a large area into a desert battlefield, extending across the Seafoam Islands’ main peak and surrounding sky 41.
  • Weather redundancy: He habitually brings two weather setters to full battles, demonstrated by Tyranitar and Hippowdon against Will 23.
  • Transport and defense: Tyranitar shapes sand into moving platforms, restraints, shields, and evacuation barriers 9 39 44 45.
  • Positional warfare: Concealed Pokémon can prepare stat boosts and coordinated attacks before enemies realize the formation is complete 9 10.
  • Limit: His snow-based lineup is not automatically compatible with his Sandstorm system. He specifically recognizes that Alolan Ninetales’s Snow Warning cannot simply be inserted as a second tactical core 47.

Dream System development

Gongping created the Dream World, also called the Dream System, by modifying existing VR games and connecting the resulting program to his Pokémon’s Poké Balls. He funded his development studies through savings made during his travels 8.

  • Supports shared virtual training with his Pokémon, simulated opponents, and realistic battle parameters 8.
  • Reproduces terrain damage, injuries, and elemental effects within the simulation 8.
  • Incorporates opponents encountered in real battles, including Shali 8.
  • Remains limited by Gongping’s understanding and calculations; Will’s Mega Gardevoir exceeded its predictions 8 28.
  • Is kept secret to protect the source of his rapid improvement; not all his Pokémon enjoy using it, particularly Lileep 8 28.

Pokémon training and care

Gongping develops his Pokémon’s independent judgment, physical conditioning, and unconventional uses of moves and Abilities 2 15 18 33.

  • Allows experienced partners to handle routine attacks and evasions without constant commands 2 18.
  • Trains Lucario’s exceptional mental strength through specialized psychic exercises and continuous Calm Mind practice, even inside its Poké Ball 18.
  • Uses Alolan Sandslash’s Ice Ball both as a growing attack and as multiple revolving projectiles 14 33.
  • Personally provides massage, basic medical care, and attention to his partners’ daily condition 11 14.
  • Understands Pokémon habitats well enough to identify Florges as an accidental arrival on Cinnabar Island 49.

Physical strength and bladework

Despite his slight appearance, Gongping can carry Staryu and Sandslash together—more than ninety kilograms—and personally massage over seventy Pokémon 14.

  • Has trained his body consistently since the Hoenn disaster 44.
  • Uses short-blade techniques taught by Bruno, though his experience remains limited 44.
  • Personally engages the Yin-Yang-Faced Freak in close combat while continuing to assess the wider battle 43 44.

Investigation and technical equipment

  • Checks the origins of captured Pokémon to identify suspect operatives and records their attack with a body camera 10.
  • Uses remote VR equipment to monitor Lucario’s battle and recognize Greninja’s Protean Ability 38.
  • Draws on previous-life knowledge to recognize the likely New Island incident, although his memory of its plot is incomplete 17.
  • Plans a blacklist that could revoke the eligibility of Trainers who abuse or abandon Pokémon 17.

Pokémon

Core Sandstorm team

Pokémon Role and distinguishing traits
Tyranitar Tactical centerpiece and principal sand controller. Uses Sand Stream with Dragon Dance boosts; also restrains Salamence’s Poké Ball when necessary 9 39 41.
Swampert Trademark powerhouse, originally rescued as Marshtomp during the Hoenn disaster. Uses independent defensive judgments and devastating physical attacks; completes six Curses before its final Seafoam Islands assault 2 4 44.
Scizor Exceptionally dedicated to training, sometimes leaving the breeding grounds to practice alone. Combines high-speed interception with sufficient strength to cut apart an Ice Beam 10 15.
Lucario One of the core six, combining overwhelming Confusion with close combat. Constant Calm Mind training supports its unusually strong psychic abilities 18 39.
Lileep Unevolved control specialist whose unusual Water Absorb manipulates moisture and whose abilities draw on nutrients in the earth. Partners with Tyranitar to establish the team’s desert domain 21 26 41 47.
Salamence Mega-capable member selected to fill gaps in the team’s defensive coverage. Its innate aggression makes it the hardest partner to control; it lives separately and requires precautions against sudden attacks 39.

Shiny Delphox Purple-flamed partner with considerable power, but a tendency toward unnecessary spectacle and excessive affection for Gongping limits how often he deploys her 48.
Claydol Called upon during the effort to stop the Seafoam Islands disaster 45.
Tepig Gongping’s early traveling partner, shown in memories and the photograph with Rosa and Trip 19 28.

Academy and League Work

  • Curriculum: Proposes a demanding five-year program covering general studies, sciences, languages, battling, and wilderness survival rather than hiring famous Trainers to teach everything 29.
  • Practical journeys: Plans two-month regional expeditions in which students earn eight Badges, with tournament performance contributing to grades 29.
  • Student resources: Proposes Starter Pokémon and Pokédexes, offers to teach several subjects himself, and seeks investors to meet the resulting costs 29 30.
  • Medical facilities: Coordinates with Lorelei over a new-model Pokémon Center on Cinnabar Island 31.
  • Teaching materials: Writes Ideology Class material and reviews the academy’s textbooks before its opening 47.
