Background / History

Early Training and Katō Squad

Dan belongs to a small ninja clan that helped the First Hokage establish Konoha. Its ancestral forbidden art, the Spirit Transformation Technique, had claimed almost all of the talented clan members who attempted to learn it. Dan developed the Spirit Activation Technique from the clan’s accumulated experience, creating a method of cultivating mental energy and establishing a safer foundation for soul separation 41 66.

His own first use of the Spirit Transformation Technique was dangerous. Approximately twenty years before his conversation with Meikyō as Hokage, he separated his soul to contact his teammates, only to discover that it was close to collapse when he tried to return. His experience with the Star Meteorite later became important to understanding how radiation could activate a spirit body 246 262.

While serving as a Genin graduation examiner, Dan took an interest in Meikyō and subsequently became the instructor of Meikyō, Inuzuka Ryo, and Aburame Nami. He deliberately used repetitive D-rank missions to develop their coordination and calm Meikyō’s hidden impatience and fear. Roughly two and a half months after the squad formed, he obtained their first C-rank mission: eliminating bandits near Tetsuseki Town 18 60.

Second Shinobi World War

Dan participated in an attack on Amegakure’s rear that destroyed its logistical supplies. Afterward, he insisted on going to assist Tsunade’s group against Hanzō. He later reached a Konoha outpost with Tsunade and Shirakumo Tokinobu, bringing news of the alliance with Hanzō 39 42.

On the Land of Rain battlefield, Dan served as Orochimaru’s deputy and managed the intelligence network. He also shouldered administrative work that Jiraiya and Tsunade were ill-suited to handle. Despite these responsibilities, he continued checking his disciples’ progress and taught them the Spirit Activation Technique 41 45.

When intelligence revealed an enemy plan to assassinate Tsunade, Dan volunteered to protect her. Orochimaru instead arranged a counter-ambush, using Tsunade as bait with Dan and Kiyomi Kōtō as her escorts. The operation crippled the enemy’s leading fighters, but Dan returned unconscious and severely injured 59 60.

Unlike the death Meikyō feared from his knowledge of the original timeline, Dan survived. His disciples received a mission to protect him during his recovery, and he spent much of his approximately two-month recuperation guiding their training. The life-threatening battle also elevated him to Kage-level strength 60 61 62.

At Orochimaru and Tsunade’s recommendation, Dan replaced Hatake Sakumo as Konoha’s western commander. His subsequent leadership against Sunagakure earned support among civilian ninja and ninja clans, and he recommended Meikyō for promotion to Special Jonin 65 66.

Later War Campaigns

When war with Sunagakure resumed, Dan again became western-front commander, with Tsunade as his deputy. Their previous experience against Suna and Tsunade’s ability to counter its poisons made them particularly suitable for the assignment 155.

Dan personally reconnoitered Suna’s poison-production base through the Spirit Transformation Technique while Tsunade guarded his body. He then assigned Meikyō an elite infiltration team to obtain its core documents. He also helped persuade Yakushi Nonō to leave Root by offering financial support for her orphanage 164 167.

During a later battle, Dan barely suppressed the One-Tail with his full mental power and attempted to seal it. Pakura ambushed him with Scorch Release while Shukaku prepared a Tailed Beast Ball. Meikyō teleported to his side and protected him with Third Stage Susanoo 170 171.

Against Iwagakure, Dan repeatedly fought Ōnoki. He eventually exploited the Tsuchikage’s intervention in another battle to inflict severe injuries, overloading his own Psychic Style in the process. His resulting poor condition prevented Konoha from mounting an effective pursuit of the retreating Iwa forces 219 220 221.

Fourth Hokage

Dan joined Meikyō, Minato, Tsunade, and Orochimaru’s coalition against Danzō. Together with Torifu Akimichi, he prevented Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura from intervening. He regarded Danzō’s death as both the removal of a threat and a declaration of unity for Konoha’s incoming leadership 237 238.

He won the Hokage election with more than two-thirds of the Jonin votes, defeating Minato. Hiruzen accepted the result and voted for him, and Dan formally took office as the Fourth Hokage 240 242.

Dan proposed opening the Konoha Military Police Force to ninja from other clans and civilian backgrounds, while allowing Uchiha members to enter other combat departments, including ANBU and Root. The reform aimed to reduce the divide between the Uchiha and the village while strengthening his new administration 244.

His tenure promoted medical and technological development through Tsunade and Orochimaru. He also sought to spread Meikyō’s Breathing Technique among elite Jonin and senior officials, hoping to identify candidates capable of learning Sage Mode 261 349.

Madara Crisis and Succession

As Madara began capturing Tailed Beasts, Dan ordered closer protection for Konoha’s Jinchūriki and immediate space-time evacuation if they were threatened. At the Five Kage Summit, he took the lead in organizing the Shinobi Allied Forces against Madara 299 303.

The widening gap between ordinary Kage-level fighters and figures such as Meikyō and Madara left Dan increasingly overwhelmed. He decided to hand the Hokage position to Meikyō after his return, although Tobirama advised waiting for a suitable moment. Meikyō later served as the Fifth Hokage, inheriting the foundation Dan’s administration had built 309 349 354.

Dan remained present among Konoha’s senior figures afterward. He acknowledged how far Meikyō’s strength had surpassed his own and attended the gathering where Hagoromo and Hamura explained their proposed assistance against Isshiki 346 401.

Appearance

  • Handsome features: Described as handsome even when covered in mud and blood after battle; his relationship with Tsunade attracted attention as a pairing of the village’s heartthrob and beauty 51 96.
  • Azure-blue eyes: His eyes emit blue light when he uses powerful mental abilities 41 160 270.
  • Long sky-blue hair: By his forties, two white strands hang over his forehead “like dragon whiskers” 282.
  • Accelerated aging: The burdens of the Hokage position and Madara’s threat make him appear to age faster than Jiraiya and Orochimaru, who are the same age 282.
  • Blue psychic radiance: Powerful telekinetic use surrounds his body with pale-blue light 160 219.

Personality

Dan is gentle, approachable, and usually smiling, but he is also strongly opinionated and unconstrained by convention. Meikyō comes to recognize that his warmth does not make him passive: he evaluates situations independently and is willing to support unconventional ideas 14 25.

As a teacher, he combines patience, teasing, and careful observation. He detects anxieties Meikyō has not recognized himself, then addresses them through ordinary missions rather than direct confrontation. He genuinely treats all three squad members as disciples and hopes they will inherit his ninja way 18 60.

His tolerance has clear boundaries. He permits students to seek personal benefits when they remain within ninja rules, but insists that they never violate Konoha’s principles or damage its reputation. He follows misconduct with specific criticism of what was handled poorly and how it could be improved 24.

Dan is protective of Tsunade and his students without being free of political ambition. He is willing to stake his life on Tsunade’s safety, retaliate against threats to Meikyō, and pursue achievements that strengthen his Hokage candidacy. Once in office, however, he recognizes that growing responsibilities and increasingly powerful enemies exceed what he can manage alone 59 155 170 309.

Abilities & Skills

Spirit Activation Technique

A self-created Yin Release secret technique that develops mental energy, with its potential improvement determined by the user’s innate mental power 41.

  • Improves chakra control as mental energy grows; Tsunade credits it with enabling medical techniques she otherwise could not perform 41.
  • Progresses from meditation and sustained concentration to precise external perception, then direct influence over physical reality 43 44.
  • Has broad compatibility with ninjutsu, though Dan does not claim certainty about its interaction with every bloodline limit 41.
  • Establishes his safety requirement for learning Spirit Transformation: mental power must first become capable of affecting reality 41 62.

Spirit Transformation Technique

The Katō Clan’s ancestral forbidden technique separates the soul from the body. Dan explains that basic telekinesis protects the soul during this separation 41 246.

  • Used for reconnaissance behind enemy lines, including locating and mapping Suna’s poison-production base 164.
  • Allows perception of spirit bodies and communication through mental-power vibrations 270.
  • Requires protection of his physical body during field use; Tsunade guards him during his reconnaissance operation 164.
  • Extremely dangerous to learn: failure can destroy the soul or leave the practitioner in a vegetative state 41 246.

Telekinesis / Psychic Style

Dan’s developed mental power directly manipulates reality. Further integration with chakra produces the ability he calls Psychic Style 160 246.

  • Flight and defense: Levitates himself, creates protective shields, and projects shockwaves capable of opposing Rasa’s Gold Dust 160 170.
  • Large-scale restraint: Barely suppresses Shukaku using his full mental power 170.
  • Resistance to Dust Release: Its partly intangible nature prevents Ōnoki from simply decomposing it, turning their confrontation into a chakra contest 219.
  • Tactical displays: Combines telekinesis and genjutsu to create a three-dimensional battlefield map 219.
  • Physical limits: Excessive use causes nosebleeds and substantial bodily strain; overloading it against Ōnoki leaves him unable to direct an effective pursuit 220 221.

Intelligence and Sensory Skills

Dan oversees battlefield intelligence and is publicly identified as Konoha’s top intelligence ninja 45 60.

  • Detects concealed emotional disturbances within Meikyō’s mental power 18.
  • Conducts independent investigations alongside his students’ intelligence work 25.
  • Teaches Meikyō how to organize, summarize, and extract useful information from large amounts of material 181.
  • Uses reconnaissance findings to select elite teams and assign targeted infiltration missions 164.

Elemental Ninjutsu and Clones

  • Wind Style: Wind Slash Technique: Precisely cuts apart Meikyō’s Phoenix Sage Fire despite Wind Style’s elemental disadvantage 16.
  • Fire Style: Has mastered its chakra nature transformation and demonstrates fine heat control while grilling food 41.
  • Shadow Clone Technique: Uses a clone to absorb the students’ coordinated attack during the bell exercise 16.

Command and Administration

  • Directs intelligence operations and substantial administrative work as Orochimaru’s deputy 45.
  • Commands campaigns against Sunagakure and Iwagakure, adapting plans when reinforcements change the available strength 65 155 219.
  • Builds political support through wartime achievements and secures an overwhelming Hokage election victory 224 240.
  • Promotes institutional reform, medical development, technological research, and wider training opportunities 244 261 262 349.
