History
Founding and Departure from the Land of Fire
After overthrowing the Hyuga Main Family, Shinichi announced that the clan would establish its own village rather than join Konoha. His proposed village would abolish the Main Family–Branch Family hierarchy and the Caged Bird Seal, open access to techniques such as Rotation and Eight Trigrams Palm, and prevent young children from being sent to war 5.
Shinichi chose the Land of Rice Fields to avoid competing directly with Konoha for territory and missions. The country offered grain-producing plains, connections to several neighboring lands, and a daimyo with limited means to interfere with the Hyuga’s development 8.
The daimyo recognized Hyuga Village, granted its site, and agreed to construction funding, annual support, and tax exemption. Before the clan could depart, Madara attacked its old compound. Hashirama stopped the confrontation, apologized on Konoha’s behalf, and agreed to help build the Hyuga’s new homes. Shinichi then led more than 3,000 clanspeople north 11 13 16.
Construction and the Bandit Purge
The settlers reached a deserted village beneath the mountains, where many mud-walled houses had collapsed and weeds stood taller than a person. They cleared the ruins, prepared foundations, and felled timber. Hashirama subsequently used Wood Release to construct houses, storehouses, and a surrounding wooden wall 19 20.
Settlement quickly exposed a financial problem: goods were scarce and expensive, ninja tools were unavailable locally, and more than half the construction grant had already been spent. Shinichi rejected ordinary missions as a sufficient source of income because the country offered too few jobs 21.
A nationwide mission funded by the daimyo and nobles became the village’s turning point. More than ninety four-person Hyuga squads cleared bandits and hostile wandering ninja over several months. Safer roads attracted merchants, while displaced families began settling outside the walls 23 25.
Industrial and Diplomatic Expansion
A shortage of ninja tools initially forced the village to seek outside suppliers. Tobirama refused to sell Konoha’s stock, but the Uchiha supplied the Hyuga at a premium. Shinichi treated the purchase as a temporary solution and pursued local production to secure the village’s strategic supplies 27 28 31.
The resulting workshop produced durable tools at prices below rival clans’ manufacturing costs. Its success led to a Distributor Conference attended by representatives from major villages, smaller villages, independent clans, and merchants. The conference established a widespread sales network and generated 295 million ryo in franchise fees alone 37 39 40 45.
The Aburame subsequently accepted Shinichi’s invitation to join the village. Once the settlement included two shinobi clans and a growing civilian population, Shinichi replaced the old clan-based administration with village departments and received the title of Light Shadow 46 51 54.
Geography and Layout
- Border position: The village occupies steep southern mountains overlooking the Land of Rice Fields’ approach from the Land of Fire. The daimyo regarded it as a defensive shield against a possible Konoha attack 11.
- Residential area: Hashirama built rows of homes and large storehouses across the mountainside 20.
- Perimeter: A tall wooden wall surrounds the village, with a broad gate opening onto the southern mountain path 20.
- Civilian settlement: Refugees initially lived in earthen houses outside the walls; the settlement later developed streets lined with shops selling grain, cloth, and ironware 23 52.
- Industrial area: The Ninja Tool Workshop stands beside a river and uses a waterwheel to power a large hammer 48.
- Aburame compound: Woods north of the village were allocated to the Aburame because they suited the raising of kikaichū 47.
- School grounds: Hyuga Elementary School occupies formerly vacant land on the eastern side of the village 55.
Government
Founding Agreement
| Provision | Terms |
|---|---|
| Recognition | Hyuga Village is the Land of Rice Fields’ sole shinobi village 11. |
| Ninja jurisdiction | All ninja within the country fall under Hyuga authority 11. |
| Civil authority | The country’s civilians and cities remain under the daimyo’s authority 11. |
| Territory | The southern mountain site is allocated to the village 11. |
| Construction grant | 500 million ryo 11. |
| Annual funding | 500 million ryo from the daimyo’s office 11. |
| Taxation | Complete exemption from land and commercial taxes 11. |
Leadership and Departments
- Light Shadow: Shinichi’s uncle proposed the title because “Hyuga” means facing toward the sun, and sunlight produces light. The assembled jonin and Genzō Aburame acclaimed Shinichi under the new title 54.
- Anbu: Led by Genzō Aburame and answerable only to Shinichi. Its responsibilities include village protection, intelligence gathering, infiltration, reconnaissance, surveillance, and tracking 54.
- Other departments: Shinichi also established Medical, Finance, Mission, Ninja Tools, and Konoha Military Police departments, alongside Hyuga Elementary School, as the village’s seven-part administrative framework 54.
- Finance: Shinichi’s eldest uncle manages the Finance Department 55.
Economy
Trade and Employment
- Safe trade routes: Clearing the country’s bandits made routes into the Land of Rice Fields—and onward toward the Land of Iron—safe enough that merchants reported no longer needing guards 25.
- Local commerce: Merchants opened shops in the village, reducing residents’ need to travel to town for necessities. Some shopkeepers came from the Land of Fire 24 52.
- Civilian employment: Settlers were attracted by available work and food; civilians formed most of the workshop’s workforce 52.
- Monthly income: By the time the Aburame had relocated, the village was earning nearly 200 million ryo per month, compared with roughly 20 million from the Hyuga Clan’s earlier mission work 51.
Ninja-Tool Production
The workshop combines coal fuel, batch casting, water-powered hammering, and workers assigned to individual tasks rather than relying entirely on veteran craftsmen 34 48 50.
| Product | Production Cost per Item | First-Tier Wholesale Price | Documented Monthly Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kunai | About 500 ryo 37 | 1,500 ryo 43 45 | 50,000 37 |
| Shuriken | About 300 ryo 37 | 900 ryo 43 | 80,000 37 |
- Quality: In testing, the new kunai remained intact while older kunai broke against them 37.
- Capacity pressure: Dealer demand eventually exceeded production, prompting orders for more furnaces, workers, miners, and blacksmiths 51.
- Chakra metal: A scarce local vein supplies chakra-conducting metal for weapons. Standard jonin blades use a mixture containing chakra metal rather than being made entirely from it 41.
Distributor System
| Tier | Franchise Fee | Places and Eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| First tier | 5 million ryo, unless waived | Reserved for villages of the Five Great Nations and friends of the Hyuga 43 44. |
| Second tier | 8 million ryo | Ten places filled at the conference 44 45. |
| Third tier | 10 million ryo | Twenty places filled at the conference 44 45. |
- Initial paying first-tier distributors: Sunagakure, Kirigakure, and Iwagakure 45.
- Fee exemptions: The Uchiha and Kaguya received first-tier status without paying the franchise fee 44 45.
- Uzumaki upgrade: The Uzumaki initially held second-tier status, then received first-tier terms after establishing friendship with the Hyuga 49 52.
- Konoha: Tobirama rejected first-tier participation, but Konoha later chose to purchase tools through the Uchiha’s shop 43 50.
Population and Military
Resident Groups
- Hyuga Clan: The founding population numbered more than 3,000, with over 300 ninja and fewer than 30 jonin before relocation 8 10.
- Aburame Clan: Joined after receiving an offer of 100 million ryo in resettlement support. Their completed move added 122 shinobi, and Shinichi promised them the same treatment as the Hyuga 46 47 51.
- Civilian settlers: Included families displaced by banditry and famine, followed by people seeking employment and food 23 52.
Recorded Strength
| Category | Strength |
|---|---|
| Total shinobi | Over 480 51 |
| Genin | Around 310 51 |
| Chunin | Over 130 51 |
| Jonin | Roughly 40 51 |
| Kage-level fighters | Shinichi alone 51 |
- Jonin equipment: Every village shinobi who becomes a jonin is entitled to a blade forged with chakra metal 41 52.
- Strategic limitation: Despite its wealth, the village’s military remained weaker than those of the Five Great Shinobi Villages. Shinichi particularly feared that its resources would attract enemies it could not yet withstand 46 51.
Security
Early Defenses
- Byakugan watches: During construction, clanspeople took turns monitoring the perimeter at night. Nearby bandits did not approach 19.
- Protective wall: Hashirama built the wall specifically to help protect elderly residents and children while the ninja were away on missions 20.
- Industrial espionage: Tobirama infiltrated the riverside workshop in disguise and examined its manufacturing system without the guards noticing. His escape exposed serious weaknesses in village security 48 49.
Sensing Barrier
- Commission: Shinichi paid the Uzumaki 50 million ryo for a sensing barrier after receiving an initial quotation of 30 million 52.
- Installation: Uzumaki Yusuke and additional Uzumaki personnel completed the barrier using formula marks on stone posts 53.
- Detection: The barrier alerts its connected guard whenever someone enters the village. Tests detected both a jonin entering from the east and Shinichi entering rapidly from the north 53.
- Requirements: A person knowledgeable about barriers must guard it, and periodic maintenance is necessary to prevent its effectiveness from declining 53.
