Background / History

Service to Takigakure and Betrayal

Kakuzu began carrying out missions for Takigakure in his teens. His service left him with numerous scars, and even one of the elders called him the village’s most loyal jōnin. On the elders’ orders, he attempted to assassinate Hashirama Senju, but was captured. Kakuzu refused to identify whoever had sent him, yet Hashirama released him 56.

Upon returning wounded, Kakuzu was shackled and imprisoned. The elders treated his survival as evidence of betrayal, dismissed his account, and planned to execute him secretly while announcing that he had died in Konoha. Kakuzu anticipated their intentions and spent three days forcing small amounts of chakra past the seals on his shackles 56 57.

When the Elder arrived alone to kill him, Kakuzu used Earth Release: Hardening Technique to stop the blade and killed him with his shackled hands. He took the keys, entered the forbidden grounds, and learned Earth Grudge Fear. He then killed the four remaining elders and incorporated their hearts into his body 57.

Inside the treasury, Kakuzu discovered a ledger showing that Takigakure had retained most of the mission fees he had earned. Concluding that neither people nor villages deserved his trust, he took more than sixty million ryō in banknotes and fought his way east toward the Land of Rice Fields 57.

Recruitment into Hyuga Village

Shinichi Hyuga intercepted Kakuzu near the border of the Land of Waterfalls and the Land of Rice Fields. Kakuzu attacked, but Shinichi knew how his five hearts worked and destroyed four of them. With Shinichi’s hand against his last heart, Kakuzu was offered a position managing Hyuga Village’s entire economy 58.

The promise of controlling a village with a net monthly income of two hundred million ryō persuaded Kakuzu to join. Instead of returning directly to Hyuga Village, the pair headed toward Takigakure to investigate the trees used to produce Explosive Tags 58 60.

Return to Takigakure

Kakuzu accompanied Shinichi during Takigakure’s subjugation. He threatened to take the hearts of those who resisted and killed a dissenting jōnin. When Takigawa also hesitated, Kakuzu prepared to attack him, but withdrew his threads after Takigawa submitted and Shinichi declared that all who surrendered were now Hyuga Village’s people 61.

Outside the village, Tobirama Senju demanded Kakuzu’s surrender and sent three Konoha jōnin to capture him. While Shinichi fought Tobirama, Kakuzu killed all three attackers and used their hearts to restore his full capacity. Shinichi also prevented Tobirama from attacking Kakuzu directly 61 62.

Finance Department and Village Defense

Kakuzu initially wanted to sell Takigakure’s first batch of five hundred Explosive Tags. Shinichi refused, arguing that selling them would arm potential enemies while Hyuga Village still needed them for its own forces. Kakuzu accepted the decision and was later entrusted with guarding the tags when Shinichi departed to rescue Yōta 65 66.

Before the war with Kumogakure, Shinichi formally handed Hyuga Village’s finances over to Kakuzu. After reviewing the account books, Kakuzu confirmed that the village could afford the campaign and argued that a demand for one billion ryō in compensation was too low 71.

When the army departed, Kakuzu remained behind to defend Hyuga Village alongside Shinichi’s uncle, stationed Uzumaki ninja, the remaining Hyuga forces, and twenty Anbu 72.

Appearance

  • Mission scars: Every scar on Kakuzu’s body is attributed to the missions he carried out for Takigakure 56.
  • Black-thread body: After learning Earth Grudge Fear, black threads emerge from his body and can stitch additional hearts into it 57.

Personality

Kakuzu’s distrust develops from Takigakure’s treatment of him rather than from any initial lack of loyalty. He returns after Hashirama releases him and insists that he has a clear conscience, only to discover that his own leaders intend to kill him. The treasury ledger compounds that betrayal, leading him to declare that money alone can be trusted 56 57.

His fixation on money is immediate and practical: he repeatedly counts his stolen banknotes, appraises Shinichi’s chakra-metal blade during their fight, and becomes distressed at the prospect of leaving Explosive Tag profits unrealized. Nevertheless, he accepts Shinichi’s argument that military supplies can be more valuable than immediate revenue 58 60 65.

Kakuzu combines patience with ruthlessness. He saves his limited chakra for a single escape opportunity, feigns death to set up a counterattack, and kills opponents to replenish his hearts. Under Shinichi, he also obeys restrictions on attacking those who have submitted and openly identifies himself as a member of Hyuga Village 57 58 61 72.

Abilities & Skills

Earth Grudge Fear

Takigakure’s forbidden technique transforms Kakuzu’s body into black threads and allows him to incorporate stolen hearts 57.

  • Heart storage: Holds a maximum of five hearts in total, including his own; additional hearts provide extra lives 57.
  • Chakra-nature acquisition: Gains access to the chakra natures possessed by stolen hearts 57.
  • Increased reserves: Incorporating the four elders’ hearts increases his chakra severalfold 57.
  • Reconstruction: Reassembles his severed body after Pale Moon cuts him apart, although the strike still destroys two hearts 58.
  • Restraint and extraction: Sends threads underground to bind targets, pierce their chests, and remove their hearts 57 61 62.
  • Limit: His reserve hearts can be destroyed individually. Shinichi’s knowledge of their locations allows him to reduce Kakuzu to one heart 58.

Elemental Ninjutsu

With the Takigakure elders’ hearts, Kakuzu can use Earth, Fire, Wind, Lightning, and Water Release 57.

Technique Applications and Limits
Earth Release: Hardening Technique Hardens his body enough to snap an execution blade, withstand fire attacks, and resist kunai. Gentle Fist bypasses this external protection; Lightning Release is also identified as a weakness 57 58 62.
Fire Release: Searing Migraine Produces a powerful fire attack. After taking the fire-using elder’s heart, Kakuzu performs Fire Release more powerfully than that elder did 57.
Wind Release: Pressure Damage Combines with Searing Migraine to create a broad, wind-amplified fire attack 58 62.
Lightning Release: False Darkness Fires a lightning bolt that punches through a tree after Shinichi evades it 58.

Combat Tactics

  • Feigning death: Remains motionless after being dismembered, then reconstructs himself and attacks Shinichi from behind 58.
  • Human shields: Pulls a Konoha jōnin into the path of another’s Lightning Release attack 62.
  • Exploiting unfamiliarity: Recognizes that opponents who do not understand Earth Grudge Fear are vulnerable to surprise heart extraction 58 61.

Financial Management

  • Reviews Hyuga Village’s account books and verifies that its funds can support the Kumogakure war 71.
  • Oversees village finances and identifies himself as the official responsible for mission payments 71 72.
  • Evaluates potential revenue from Explosive Tags and advocates larger compensation demands against Kumogakure 65 71.

Equipment / Items

  • Stolen banknotes — Takes more than sixty million ryō from Takigakure’s treasury; leaves the gold because it is too heavy to carry 57.
  • Earth Grudge Fear scroll — Obtains the forbidden technique’s scroll from Takigakure’s forbidden grounds and learns from it 57.
  • Hyuga Village account books — Receives them when formally taking charge of the village’s finances 71.

Relationships

  • Shinichi Hyuga — Leader and employer. Defeats and recruits Kakuzu, protects him from Konoha, fulfills his promise to hand over the finances, and entrusts him with village defense 58 62 71 72.
  • Takigakure’s elders — Former superiors who order the assassination mission, imprison him, and arrange his execution. Kakuzu kills them and takes four of their hearts 56 57.
  • Hashirama Senju — Failed assassination target who captures and releases him. Later asks Tobirama to spare Kakuzu if possible 56 60.
  • Tobirama Senju — Enemy who seeks Kakuzu’s capture and attempts to attack him after the deaths of three Konoha jōnin 61 62.
  • Takigawa — Former village comrade whom Kakuzu threatens during Takigakure’s submission; Kakuzu spares him on Shinichi’s orders 61.
  • Kaguya clan leader — Recognizes him as a former Takigakure ninja. Kakuzu corrects her affiliation and directs her to claim mission payment from him after the campaign 72.
