Perhaps it was because of hunger, or perhaps because he was thinking about his second check-in. In any case, Luo Fan had not rested well that night and had slept lightly.
When he opened his eyes, he was still drowsy, but he could not get back to sleep at all.
Pulling his clothes tighter around himself, Luo Fan sat up. It was pitch-black around him, and he had no idea what time it was. Coughs sounded from time to time.
With a slight shift of his attention, Luo Fan immersed himself in his shop. Sure enough, his balance had risen to 2 yuan.
Presumably, while he was asleep, the system had automatically checked him in at midnight and awarded him 1 yuan.
Of the shop's five products, only purified water had originally been available for purchase. Now, the purchase option for rice had also unlocked.
Without wasting any time, Luo Fan immediately chose to buy it.
Rice purchased successfully. Storage space unlocked. Your purchase has been automatically placed in storage and can be retrieved at will.
His balance dropped to zero, and the corresponding notification popped up.
With a slight thought, Luo Fan immediately opened his storage space.
The storage space had roughly the capacity of two or three suitcases.
It was not particularly large, but what more could he ask for when he had gotten a storage space for free?
So? Does this mean I'll never have to carry a backpack myself again? Luo Fan was overjoyed at unlocking the storage space.
Originally, when the system had given him only 1 yuan for checking in, he had thought it was a useless piece of junk.
But it also came with a linked shop where he could use his check-in money to buy supplies, which Luo Fan thought was pretty good.
One yuan was not much, but even the tiniest bit counted.
Now, buying supplies had actually unlocked a storage space about the size of a wooden crate, making Luo Fan even happier.
It was not just that he could save his strength by going without a backpack while migrating.
Having a storage space like this would also make gathering supplies much easier.
Only half a kilogram of rice lay alone inside the storage space. Luo Fan put everything from his backpack into it, and sure enough, there was no problem.
Apart from being unable to store living things, he could put things into and take things out of this storage space at will.
Besides, if it couldn't hold living things, that meant bacteria and the like couldn't get inside Storage Space either, so food wouldn't spoil, right?
Thinking of spoilage, Luo Fan grew curious about his half-piece of moldy bread.
Would the mold on the bread die immediately once he put it inside?
Shaking his head, Luo Fan suppressed his jumble of thoughts and picked up his stainless-steel helmet.
He had made it from a suitable pot by threading cord through its two handles.
It could serve as both a helmet and a cooking pot when needed. He could not ask for anything better.
Feeling around in the dark nearby, he gathered some dry leaves, twigs, and other fuel. Luo Fan walked several dozen meters away from the convoy's resting place, lit a fire, then poured the rice and murky drinking water into the pot.
They would pass through a small town that morning. Since he had decided to gather supplies there, he naturally needed to eat as much as he could.
Was this what he should expect from a shop product? After about twenty minutes of cooking, the fragrance of rice filled the air, making Luo Fan swallow hard.
He did not know whether it was because he had not eaten freshly cooked rice since the apocalypse began, or because the rice from the shop really was that good.
In any case, the aroma made Luo Fan sniff deeply, and his stomach seemed to grow even more restless.
After waiting another ten minutes or so, Luo Fan picked up a little rice with a wooden stick and tasted it. It was quite good, cooked soft, with the delicate fragrance of rice lingering in his mouth.
"Hey, young man, are you cooking rice?"
Just then, a figure felt his way over to Luo Fan. The light was too dim to make out the man's features, but his eyes were very bright as he stared fixedly at the rice in Luo Fan's pot.
Luo Fan said nothing, but he gripped the short blade he carried tightly in his hand and stared at the man.
"Heh, I... I'm just taking a look. I don't mean anything else..."
Seeing Luo Fan stare at him without a word, blade in hand, the light in the man's eyes slowly faded, and he backed away.
Only after watching the man leave did Luo Fan relax.
The short blade could pose little threat to a Fierce Beast, let alone supernatural horrors.
But sometimes, it could make other humans wary of him.
After several months of the apocalypse, anyone who did not know how to protect themselves had long since been weeded out.
Although he had used only about a hundred grams of rice, it made quite a lot once cooked.
Despite his hunger, Luo Fan ate very slowly, carefully savoring every grain as though it were a treasure. By the end, he had practically licked the pot clean.
Feeling food in his stomach and warmth spreading through it, Luo Fan could not help letting out a satisfied sigh. Now this is living.
About half an hour later, the sky gradually brightened. The people quickly got up, and then the bus at the head of the convoy sounded its horn and started moving.
A modified off-road vehicle followed behind it, along with a van, then two motorcycles and several bicycles close behind. The other survivors traveling on foot followed too.
Led by the bus up front, the group of over sixty survivors continued their flight.
Washing their faces and brushing their teeth? Such luxuries were naturally nowhere to be seen. Among the survivors who got up and followed, those who still had food silently took out crackers and bread, or simply grabbed a handful of toasted flour, eating as they walked.
After they had walked on for about another two hours, a voice suddenly rang out. "Buildings! There's a small town up ahead!"
That shout immediately invigorated the previously listless group of survivors. As they looked toward the town, hope appeared in many of their eyes.
A town meant supplies.
There would be danger, but the same principle still applied: going in to search for supplies meant a slim chance of survival, while staying out meant starving or dying of thirst, with no chance of survival at all.
After about another twenty minutes, the convoy reached the edge of the town.
Looking in from outside, they saw nothing but emptiness. Although the sun had already risen, the place still gave them the creeps.
Supernatural horrors feared sunlight above all else, so there was no need to worry about them during the day!
But Fierce Beasts weren't afraid of sunlight. The town looked utterly lifeless, without even a single Fierce Beast in sight.
That only made everyone feel uneasy.
The door of the off-road vehicle opened, and a man of about thirty with a face covered in stubble stepped out of the front passenger seat.
Everyone's gaze settled on him.
Zhao Chunfeng, the heart and soul of the Hope Convoy.
Zhao Chunfeng took three Steel Coins from his pocket, shook them a few times between his cupped hands, then opened his hands and scattered the three Steel Coins onto the hood of the off-road vehicle.
"The divination indicates danger. Those of you going in should be careful. We have to retreat in an hour at most."
After examining the three tossed Steel Coins closely, Zhao Chunfeng made his announcement.
So this is a Sequence User's ability? It really does seem amazing every time I see it. Luo Fan stood among the crowd too, silently muttering to himself as he watched the convoy leader Zhao Chunfeng's actions.
