What mattered most in the Apocalypse?
Food.
Whoever could produce a steady supply of food had a say.
Just then, Kang Yixiang suddenly raised her voice. "Everyone, Mechanical City is back to normal. Let's head out."
Everyone followed Kang Yixiang out of the shelter.
They pushed open the heavy alloy door. Everything outside was as usual.
The buildings were the same buildings, the streets the same streets. There wasn't a single trace of damage.
That shouldn't have been possible.
Questions arose in everyone's minds.
Mechanical City had been tossed around inside that thundercloud for so long, with lightning striking like firecrackers going off at New Year. How could nothing have been damaged?
Kang Yixiang seemed able to see through their confusion and volunteered an explanation. "Whenever Mechanical City enters combat or makes a jump, it deploys a defensive shield-the electrical arcs you saw earlier."
"Generally, nothing goes wrong inside the shield, unless there's an Eerie capable of breaking through it."
Only then did everyone understand...
Those electrical arcs covering the entire city weren't just for show.
The jeep took everyone back to the Outer City and stopped outside the Outer City's No. 1 Hotel.
"You're all free to do as you please," Kang Yixiang told them, then added, "Just make sure you find a shelter and take cover as soon as you hear the alarm."
She pointed to a towering steel building in the distance. "That's a shelter. There's one roughly every two kilometers."
With that, she turned and hurried away, seemingly busy with something else.
The members of the Survival Convoy dispersed. Some returned to their rooms, while others went out to explore.
Everything about Mechanical City felt strange, but at least...
For now, it seemed reasonably safe. Exploring a little more might help them figure a few things
