|---|---|---|
| Five-viscera Martial Arts Master — historical peak | 73 81 113 | Had hopes of reaching Grandmaster and was described as having “one foot” in that realm. Twenty-five years before the account in Chapter 113, he single-handedly exterminated the Black Serpent Sect, including its five-viscera master and more than a dozen three- and four-viscera masters. |
| Reduced to Twelve Refinements | 54 64 73 | Hu Jinghui joined forces with outsiders to defeat him. Damage to his internal organs caused his cultivation to fall and forced him to flee the prefectural capital. |
| Twelve Refinements with persistent internal injuries | 91 106 110 | No recovery to his former realm is documented. He nevertheless severed Xu Longxiang’s arm, fought three Twelve Refinements experts simultaneously, and killed one with True Intention. Prolonged fighting aggravated his condition. |
Background / History
Fang Heting originally belonged to the Tiger-Crane Sect. After its tiger and crane factions split, he established White Crane Hall in the Prefectural City and named himself lineage master of the Tianshui Clear-Crane Lineage. His later entry among the Five Fiends ranked him first under the title Crane Demon 112 113.
Twenty-five years before Wei Sheng read that entry, Fang destroyed the Black Serpent Sect alone. The sect had once rivaled major powers such as Wutai Academy, Golden Spring Temple, and the Tyrant Blade Sect; its defenders included a fully developed five-viscera Martial Arts Master 113.
Hu Jinghui subsequently allied with outsiders against Fang, severely injuring him and forcing him out of the prefectural capital. Many precious arts in the Clear-Crane collection were lost during that conflict. Fang settled in Black Mountain City, where White Crane Martial Arts Hall became one of the city’s Four Great Martial Arts Schools 64 73 92.
His daughter, Fang Luoyin, reached Ten Refinements and left for Sishui Prefecture under an assumed name. She entered an academy master’s tutelage with the intention of avenging him 73.
Appearance
- White hair and a middle-aged face: His face does not appear elderly despite his crane-white hair 54 56.
- Blue-green training clothes: First seen wearing a loose blue-green training uniform while seated cross-legged in Listening Crane Pavilion 54.
- Scholarly bearing: Deep eyes and a refined manner suggest both learning and worldly weariness 56.
- Deceptively ordinary presence: Wei Sheng initially finds his quiet appearance difficult to reconcile with his reputation as a Twelve Refinements expert 54.
- Visible pallor after exertion: His old injuries leave him noticeably pale after obtaining the Five-Flower Horse and after fighting Xu Longxiang 57 91.
Personality
Fang is exacting about talent and selective about disciples. He initially gives Wei Sheng only half a month to reach minor attainment in the White Crane Flesh Refinement Method. Once he recognizes Wei Sheng’s exceptional foundations, he becomes openly proud of him, boasting to Yu Qianji and treating him as the hope of restoring the Clear-Crane Lineage 54 64 65 78.
His protectiveness outweighs both personal safety and secrecy. Defending Wei Sheng against Xu Longxiang exposes the identity Fang had concealed after escaping his old enemies. During Black Mountain City’s invasion, he explicitly tells his disciples to retreat rather than sacrifice their lives in an unwinnable fight 91 106.
He combines a vengeful streak with political restraint. Although determined to reclaim what Hu Jinghui took from him, he refuses to kill Hong Chengyuan immediately, explaining that a wider factional conflict would endanger his disciples and followers 64 76 92.
As a teacher, Fang favors strong foundations over rapid advancement. He warns Wei Sheng against reckless cultivation and refuses to provide bone-refining instruction prematurely, even after seeing the speed of his progress 86 92.
Abilities & Skills
White Crane True Intention
Fang’s crane-based martial arts can attack an opponent’s mind as well as their body 76 106 108.
- His demonstrations produce crane cries within Wei Sheng’s mind 76.
- A practice punch shatters a two-meter bluestone behind Wei Sheng without internal force and with very little physical force 76.
- During the city battle, a True Intention punch kills a Twelve Refinements opponent by destroying his head 106.
- His old injuries restrict sustained use of his strongest attacks; after that killing blow, Hong Chengyuan judges him unable to repeat it immediately 106.
Three Great True Arts of the Clear-Crane Lineage
| Art | Type | Documented use |
|---|---|---|
| Crane Shadow Floating in the Sky | Fist technique | Fang teaches it through direct demonstrations, emphasizing intent rather than brute force. Ordinary White Crane Fist is only its most basic foundation 76. |
| Penglai Misty Steps | Movement technique | Fang teaches it to Wei Sheng and later drives it to its limit to reach him during the fight with Chong Xuanhu 92 108. |
| Unnamed claw art | Claw technique | Identified as the third great true art. Fang also uses crane-claw attacks in battle, though the provided account does not name the art 76 92 108. |
Martial Insight and Instruction
Fang can recognize unusual cultivation foundations, lingering forces, and technical accomplishments 56 63 64 107.
- Detects traces of at least four flesh-refining methods in Wei Sheng’s fighting 56.

Knowledge of Red Lotus Flame Force
Fang possesses the Red Lotus Cultivation Method, which he says he obtained by chance years earlier. His knowledge does not establish that he personally cultivates Red Lotus Flame Force 90.
- Initially refuses to teach it before Wei Sheng reaches Nine Refinements because of its danger 90.
- Provides medicinal support and has Wei Sheng practice nearby so he can intervene if necessary 90.
- Explains that the force consumes blood, qi, and eventually life energy 90 92.
- Recommends high-level health-nourishing arts to counteract that loss and promises to seek a Grandmaster-reaching art from the Academy once Wei Sheng reaches Twelve Refinements 92.
