Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Ten Refinements 33 His established cultivation when his history is explained. Once considered capable of reaching Twelve Refinements, he damaged his foundation by repeatedly burning blood and qi in youthful battles, leaving further advancement difficult.
Tiger-Howling Saber Technique — approaching Perfection 54 After more than a decade of practice, he remains short of Perfection. This is a confirmed proficiency level rather than a newly depicted breakthrough.

Background / History

Black Tiger fought recklessly in his youth, repeatedly burning his blood and qi for immediate combat strength. The resulting damage prematurely whitened his hair and undermined his cultivation prospects. Although he once had the potential to reach Twelve Refinements, he attained only Ten Refinements and faced little prospect of another breakthrough 33.

By Wei Sheng’s arrival at Weiyuan Hall, Black Tiger commands the Five Tiger Generals and maintains an Outer City residence guarded by Third Refinement martial artists. Golden-Eyed Biao, his adopted son, is initially the strongest of his Tiger Generals and the only one to have reached Tendon Refinement 31.

Appearance

  • White hair: His prematurely aged appearance results from damage to his martial foundation, not a large age gap with Jiang Liuchuan; he is only four or five years older than Jiang 33.
  • Clothing: At his introduction, he wears a white, front-buttoned riding jacket 31.
  • Bearing: He resembles a crouching tiger, projecting an oppressive presence. When angry, he appears like a savage tiger ready to devour someone 31 37.

Personality

Black Tiger has a reputation in Black Mountain City for being powerful, ruthless, and black-hearted. His usual sternness makes his subordinates fearful, and his delighted treatment of Wei Sheng surprises even Violent Bear 34 37.

He is markedly more patient with people whose talent and character he respects. Impressed by Wei Sheng’s composure during saber instruction, he slows his demonstration, explains each movement, and spends four hours correcting him. He later insists that Wei Sheng address him as “Brother Tiger,” treating him as a friend rather than an ordinary subordinate 38 79.

His own damaged foundation makes him wary of short-sighted ambition. He discourages Jiang Liuchuan from forcing a dangerous breakthrough merely to win a rivalry, and warns Wei Sheng that sudden fame will attract hostile attention 33 49.

Despite his temper, he recognizes practical limits. He cannot match Dapeng’s commercial connections, cautions Wei Sheng against provoking Liu Delu, and orders a retreat rather than sacrifice Weiyuan Hall’s elites against a prepared White Lotus Cult ambush 47 85 87.

Abilities & Skills

Tiger-Howling Saber Technique

Black Tiger’s signature saber art, introduced as Tiger’s Roar, is a fierce, direct technique that channels Jin Force into lethal attacks. He has practiced it for over a decade and reached a level approaching Perfection 37 38 47 54.

  • Black Tiger Pounces on Prey: A rushing attack aimed at the throat or heart 38.
  • Hungry Tiger Turns Back: A feigned retreat followed by a sudden counter-slash against a pursuing enemy 38.
  • Tiger-Howling Wind-Rending: A horizontal area slash producing a sonic blast and saber winds within thirty feet. Black Tiger explains that perfected execution can manifest black tiger phantoms 38.
  • Tiger Demon Shatters the Mountain: The ultimate killing move, gathering all available Jin Force into a downward slash 38.
  • Projected ceiling: Black Tiger believes a perfected practitioner could kill a Twelve Refinements expert despite a lower cultivation level, but explicitly has not tested that conjecture himself 38.

Combat Prowess and Limitations

  • Threatening instruction: Even when deliberately avoiding a killing blow, his saber demonstration makes Wei Sheng feel that death is imminent 38.
  • Fighting while injured: Against Hong Chengchun, his saber energy narrowly misses the hall master and cuts a late Sixth Refinement deputy hall master in half 87.
  • Injury aggravation: Forcing Jin Force while already wounded causes him to cough blood and collapse. Repeated exertion during the subsequent ambush leaves him barely able to stand 87.
  • Comparable opponent: Chief Constable Wang Wu is described as comparable to him in strength 88.

Instruction and Martial Knowledge

  • Recognizes Wei Sheng’s Skin Refinement Perfection and later identifies the characteristic roar of the perfected Tiger-Howling Saber Technique 34 54.
  • Gives detailed demonstrations and corrects technical errors during instruction 38.
  • Identifies yellow pustules and fleshy growths as signs of the White Lotus Cult’s Flesh-and-Blood Gu 54.
  • Advises Wei Sheng to abandon the Golden Bell Shield if he cannot reach its first level within a month, rather than waste cultivation time 50.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Thick-backed saber — Used against Hong Chengchun and carried during the White Lotus Cult fighting at Bodhisattva Temple 72 87.

Relationships

  • Wei Sheng — Subordinate, saber student, and later trusted friend. Black Tiger sponsors his advancement, rewards his achievements, and continues defending him after he becomes External Affairs Envoy 34 38 49 79 93.
  • Jiang Liuchuan — Close friend who calls him “Tiger.” Black Tiger’s warning against a foundation-damaging breakthrough prompts Jiang to thank him and offer a favor 33.
  • Golden-Eyed Biao — Adopted son and initially the strongest of his Five Tiger Generals 31.
  • Fire Ox — Tiger General and loyal subordinate. Carries Black Tiger away when his injuries worsen during the White Lotus Cult ambush 31 87.
  • Shanjia and Violent Bear — Tiger Generals under his command. Both defer to his authority despite the rivalry among his subordinates 31 37.
  • Qin Hui / Master Qin — Fellow hall master and ally. Supports Black Tiger’s challenge to Dapeng and later intervenes against Hong Chengchun before covering Weiyuan Hall’s retreat 48 87.
  • Yu Qianji — Gang leader and superior. Authorizes Black Tiger’s arrangement for Wei Sheng to select martial arts from the Fish Scale Pavilion 49.
  • Dapeng — Rival hall master within the same gang. Black Tiger resents Wind and Cloud Hall’s encroachment and publicly challenges its handling of Lan Fei’s collusion with outsiders 37 48.
  • Hong Chengchun — Enemy hall master of Azure Dragon Hall. Attempts to exploit Black Tiger’s injuries to seize Fish-Dragon Street 87.
  • Hu Rong — Fellow hall master whom Black Tiger confronts over attempts to pressure Wei Sheng into a dangerous expedition and deny him an appropriate reward 93.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Five Tiger Generals Selection

Black Tiger attends the selection alongside Jiang Liuchuan and Master Qin. After recognizing Wei Sheng’s exceptional skin refinement, he appoints him the fifth Tiger General, rewards him with one hundred taels, Golden Body Paste, and a Flesh Refinement Method, then hosts a celebratory banquet at the Guest-Welcoming Tower 31 34.

East Prosperity Street and Saber Instruction

Following Changyou’s death, Black Tiger negotiates a six-month territorial truce with Dapeng and Azure Dragon Hall’s master. The agreement breaks down after three months, with rival forces taking two of Changyou’s streets and threatening the last. Black Tiger is especially angered that another Fish-Dragon Gang hall is participating in the encroachment 37.

Wei Sheng’s demonstration of Fourth Refinement Jin Force gives Black Tiger a promising candidate to hold the territory. He teaches Wei Sheng the Tiger-Howling Saber Technique and promises a surprise if he reaches Minor Accomplishment within a month 37 38.

After Wei Sheng severely wounds Feng Li Dao, Black Tiger uses Lan Fei’s collusion with another gang to rebuke Dapeng publicly. He fulfills his promised reward by securing permission for Wei Sheng to choose two martial arts from the normally restricted Fish Scale Pavilion 48 49.

White Lotus Cult Investigation

Black Tiger and Jiang Liuchuan establish that Wei Sheng destroyed a Flesh-and-Blood Gu by ordering an infected corpse burned. Black Tiger subsequently searches for the White Lotus Envoy and uncovers further infections on his territory, leading him to suspect a conspiracy threatening all of Black Mountain 54 57.

At Bodhisattva Temple, he pursues the White Lotus Envoy but finds the mutilated corpse left by Wei Sheng’s concealed attack. Unable to identify the killer, he suspects a Peak Ten Refinements expert and returns to fight the remaining cultists 71 72.

Supporting the External Affairs Envoy

Black Tiger initially advises Wei Sheng not to rush into the External Affairs Envoy selection, believing the stronger candidates beyond his current reach. After Wei Sheng reveals Seven Refinements, Black Tiger supports his entry and defends his accomplishments against objections from other leaders 79 80.

Following Wei Sheng’s ore-escort mission, Black Tiger welcomes him home and relays confirmation that his mother has been freed from corvée labor. He agrees to arrange for her to remain in the prefectural capital while the search for Wei Sheng’s father continues 85.

Fish-Dragon Street Ambush

Already wounded by White Lotus Cult fighters, Black Tiger leads Weiyuan Hall against Hong Chengchun’s forces on Fish-Dragon Street. He drives his saber art hard enough to endanger Hong, but aggravates his injuries. Qin Hui’s arrival forces Azure Dragon Hall to withdraw 87.

A prepared White Lotus Cult ambush follows. Black Tiger orders a retreat, then stops fleeing and tells Fire Ox to take the wounded Tiger Generals away while he grips his saber to face their pursuer. Wei Sheng intervenes against the Yaksha before it can kill them 87 88.

Expedition Dispute and Continuing Duties

Black Tiger later rebukes Hu Rong for pressuring Wei Sheng into an expedition where hostile bandits could concentrate their attacks on him. When Hu objects to a reward from the Fish Scale Pavilion’s third floor, Black Tiger lists Wei Sheng’s services to the gang, including reopening the ore route and conquering Azure Dragon Hall 93.

His last documented appearance shows him leaving the Yu Residence to investigate outsiders who have seized gang territory in Black River Ward 104.
