Background / History

Qu Zan originally lived on Blue Star and rented an apartment on Shanghai’s outskirts. After drinking heavily at a company dinner, he awakens on Mìdì’s grasslands in the body of a sixteen-year-old boy bearing the same name. The original Qu Zan was a Nangsheng—the lowest class of serf—at Bado Manor 1.

The boy had fled with his younger sister, Meiduo, to escape being made into a Five-Extremities Offering. During their flight, he fell down a hillside and lost consciousness, after which the transmigrator took his place and inherited his memories. Those memories include the deaths of his parents, whipping, deprivation, and childhood persecution 1 90 97.

After finding shelter with Duimu, Qu Zan seeks refuge in Corpse Camel Temple. He hires Bage as a guarantor and pays secret silver to secure admission as a Gegan rather than a fire-tending servant. Although the steward recognizes his slave brand, Qu Zan maintains a rehearsed account of poverty and disaster. He is ordained with the Dharma name Gyatso 3 4 5.

His rise from Attendant Monk through Scholar Monk to Geshe takes less than a year. Cangyang Konghai later investigates his origins and openly identifies him as Bado Manor’s runaway Nangsheng, a discovery Qu Zan had anticipated as his standing increased 131 162.

Appearance

Qu Zan changes markedly as cultivation improves his formerly thin body. By his return to Bado Manor, he has refined features, bright eyes, a tall frame, and a scholarly bearing that sharply distinguish him from the frightened serf he once was 87.

  • Monastic appearance: Initially wears purplish-red robes, a monk’s skirt, hemp shoes, and closely cropped hair 10.
  • Geshe attire: Fine purplish-red garments with distinctive trim, a ceremonial rooster-crest hat, and a waist pouch containing a copper mouth-rinsing bottle 131.
  • Empowerment mark: Receives a black mark around his shoulder and neck after the Lion-Headed Dakini’s ritual 44.
  • Transformed features: The Lion Ghost Curse Seal can produce lion fur, sharp nails, and amber pupils 48.
  • Ghost-bound left arm: Houses Indra’s Hand and eyes that grow through holes in the arm; he is also shown wearing a golden gauntlet 70 87.
  • Disguises: Uses lay clothing and false hair made from horse mane and yak hair; later wears a Medicinal Mud Mask to conceal his face and aura 108 173.

Personality

Qu Zan is studious, methodical, and strongly motivated by the possibility of changing his circumstances. He attends scripture lessons even when exempt, divides resources between bodily and mental development, and maintains a demanding schedule of cultivation, scripture study, medicine work, and spell instruction. He increasingly prefers study to patron visits and social obligations 5 35 74 140.

He is cautious about both supernatural power and institutional authority. He conceals the panel and his unusually rapid mantra comprehension, remains guarded despite a steward’s friendliness, and recognizes that careless changes to his ghost powers could destroy their balance. His polite religious manner often conceals suspicion, anger, or deliberate calculation 10 43 79 162.

His affection for Meiduo survives his rise in rank: he rejects her attempt to address him as a venerable teacher and insists that he remains her brother. He also refuses to use vulnerable prisoners as sacrifices. That restraint does not prevent decisive violence against threats, including killing the Rebudian Chieftain Zuo Qian after refusing him escape 10 54 172.

Memories of serfdom remain a source of fear and rage even after he becomes powerful. Returning to Bado Manor triggers nightmares, while encounters with its third young master revive his hatred. His later breakthrough comes through accepting suffering and failure rather than simply suppressing those feelings 90 97 114.

Abilities & Skills

Status Panel and Fortune Essence

The panel tracks his attributes, talents, methods, progress, and available points 1 17.

  • Absorbs Fortune Essence from qualifying antiques and obtains it during Form Realm exploration 35 127.
  • Allocates points to physical attributes, consciousness, talents, and cultivation methods 35 59 127.
  • Records comprehension gained through study and practice, including mantras, medicine, and channel refinement 10 59 181.
  • Can fuse methods with shared cultivation attributes, as with the Lion Ghost Curse Seal and Lion’s Roar Heart Mantra 44.

Extensive Learning

Supports memorization of scripture and the movement patterns of physical skills 8.

  • Helps him learn riding and retain techniques after watching demonstrations 8 37.
  • Works with Patience to accelerate his comprehension of the Lion’s Roar Heart Mantra 10.
  • Discern Good and Evil: Grants some ability to foresee calamity and blessings; it is not described as infallible prediction 147.

Patience

Supports unwavering concentration and develops defensive and restorative effects 10 59 155.

  • Unmoving Radiance: Heals injuries and purges possessing evil spirits while he remains patient and unmoving, with his feet planted on the earth 59.
  • Vajra Circle: Creates a mentally drawn protective circle that enhances those inside and conceals their presence 155.
  • Enemies touching the circle from outside are damaged and repelled 155.

Giving

First manifests after Qu Zan teaches Doje the Sun Salutation 17.

  • Reduces the hostility of those who benefit from his goodwill 17.
  • Suffering Bestowal: Allows him to bestow negative states—including fatigue, pain, weakness, and confusion—upon others 130.
  • His understanding of giving emphasizes inner sufficiency rather than exhausting himself, informing his use of the Heart and Root Chakras 153.

Secret Conduct

Provides access to the Form Realm through its lv3 effect 126.

  • Allows his consciousness, rather than his physical body, to enter and leave that realm 126.
  • Enables expeditions that yield Fortune Essence 127.
  • Depends on the panel’s talent effect; Qu Zan distinguishes this from entering through his unaided meditative attainment 156.

Discipline-Keeping

Heightens his perception of restraints such as vows and precepts 157.

  • Uses precepts to punish those who violate them 157.
  • Multiplies damage inflicted on precept-breakers 157.
  • Its possible future ability to establish precepts is Qu Zan’s speculation, not a demonstrated power 157.

Three Secrets Cultivation

Combines Body Secret, Speech Secret, and Mind Secret practice 113 142.

  • Great Sun Tummo: Develops his vitality and chakras. Perfecting the Navel Chakra strengthens his tissues and organs, improves recovery, increases resistance to heat and cold, and steadies him against mental disturbance 109 110.
  • Mudras: Channel chakra power into techniques. He defeats Kaizhu and Danyun with basic fist mudras despite lacking extensive formal martial training 134 135 136.
  • Speech Secret: Progresses from loud and whispered recitation to Vajra Recitation 156 157.
  • Peacock Wisdom King Esoteric Method: His Mind Secret method, developed through Yidam visualization and advanced to its second stage 82 127.
  • Sound Secret Pulse-Refining Method: Uses internal mantra vibrations to clear channels and make energy circulation smoother and faster 181.
  • Integrating mudras, incantations, and visualization produces several times their previous power 142.

Lion-Headed Dakini Empowerment

Grants the Lion Ghost Curse Seal and the Reversal and Obstruction Method 44.

  • Lion Ghost Curse Seal: Enhances strength, striking force, explosive power, and speed with the abilities of an adult male lion 44.
  • Its transformed claws can clash with a blade, and its eyes allow him to see in complete darkness 48 50.
  • Reversal: Returns malicious power directed at him to its source 45.
  • Obstruction: Blocks outside sorcery through a protective barrier 45.
  • The empowerment carries a risk of losing control; the ritual itself can kill its recipients 44 45.

Indra’s Hand

A bound ghost power residing in his left hand 51 52.

  • Thousand Hands: Generates solid, controllable hands that can branch into further hands 52.
  • Hand Mound: Produces arms from ground or rock within his field of vision; also used to seize opponents and create footholds 52 79 111.
  • Suppresses other ghost powers and ritual objects, including Indra’s Eye, the Ghost Rope, and the Wrath God Kangdong 70 103 153.
  • Initially causes fatigue and rapid revival; offerings of dead people’s eyes reduce revival to 1%, but no lower 52.
  • By his fight with Doji Cizhu, Perfect Control removes his fear of being worn down through the hand’s revival 80.

Indra’s Eye and Red Guanyin’s Power

Indra’s Eye shares a source with Indra’s Hand and is bound with its assistance 70.

  • Examines uncanny bodies, detects concealed spaces, and sees through dense mountain mist 85 86 112.
  • Can influence visual consciousness and create illusions; deeper Mind Secret cultivation improves their realism 83.
  • Absorbs Red Guanyin, granting Blood Shadow Body and Shadow Ghost Binding; the supplied account does not fully explain either ability 161.
  • Absorption destabilizes his arm’s ghost power, requiring restraint from Indra’s Hand and stabilization through the Bamboo Grove Vihara 161.

White-Robed Guanyin’s Seed Syllable

Receives the “Bam” seed syllable through Duo'erna’s vase lineage empowerment 164.

  • Seeing Sentient Beings: Perceives sentient life, including humans and animals, but excludes insentient things such as plants and minerals 164.
  • White Light Calamity-Averting: Disperses evil entities, pestilence, and poisons 164.
  • Receives the illness, grief, pain, and karmic suffering of others 164.
  • Turning Misfortune into Fortune: Provides blessings, including through inscribed talismans 164.
  • Requires good deeds, harmonious chakras, and engagement with others’ suffering; greed and self-attachment can cause backlash 164.
  • Excessive use consumes mental energy and causes a throbbing headache 164.

Ritual, Divination, and Medicine

Studies medicinal ingredients, spellcraft, mandalas, and ritual artifacts under Duo'erna 59 60 136 138.

  • Circular-Light Divination: Locates a hidden livestock-killing beast and assesses whether villagers can defeat it 142.

  • Ghost Book divination: Locates possible Vengeful Ghosts using Indra’s aura and the Bamboo Grove Vihara, but incurs debts of flesh, blood, and souls 172.
