Appearance
- Build: Short and round, standing 160 centimeters tall and weighing 160 jin when first described in detail 7.
- Clothing: Wears coarse monk’s robes as an Attendant Monk, making him feel conspicuously shabby beside privileged scripture students 6.
- Facial hair: Has begun growing a fine ring of down around his mouth by the time he teaches Qu Zan Tummo Meditation 37.
Personality
Doje initially treats scripture study as an ordeal. He goes through chanting services mechanically, falls asleep during lessons, and knows how to make menial work easier through practiced slacking. His dismissiveness also reflects insecurity: he believes poor monks lack the foundations enjoyed by nobles and becomes visibly uncomfortable among wealthy students 6 7.
He enjoys acting the experienced senior brother, particularly when he has something to teach Qu Zan. Although he hopes warrior-monk training will finally let him impress his more accomplished friend, he admires Qu Zan rather than resenting him. After witnessing Qu Zan’s recitation ability, he asks for help learning to read and memorize scriptures 9 31 37.
Food is one of his strongest enthusiasms. He readily lists treats he wants from the market, looks forward to banquet leftovers, and abandons a sparring stance immediately when invited to eat mutton. He also openly dreams of practicing the Wisdom Consort Method 7 10 14 37.
Doje is easily frightened by ghosts but deeply loyal. In the Ghost Domain, he follows Qu Zan into darkness without a torch and even says he would sacrifice an arm if his junior brother needed food to survive. His usual carefree manner conceals bitterness toward oppression, especially the Rebudian Chieftains responsible for brutalizing serfs 50.
History
Life as an Attendant Monk
Doje comes from Gebu Village and a poor background. As a child, he knew a man he called “Uncle” who escaped an estate, only to be captured by a Rebudian Chieftain. The chieftain cut out the man’s tongue and tortured him to death, an experience behind Doje’s hatred of such enforcers 7 50.
At Corpse Camel Temple, Doje becomes Qu Zan’s senior brother and companion in daily labor. They wash robes, carry water, and clean Buddhist statues together. While working at the Secret Medical Institute, Qu Zan prompts him to consider how its detailed fetal-development thangka was created; the implication of repeated dissections makes Doje gag 5 6 7 9.
Madam Yangjin’s Thangka
Doje and Qu Zan serve at Madam Yangjin’s private Dharma assembly, where the household displays an ancestral human-skin thangka. Staring at its guardian heavenly maidens draws Doje into an erotic illusion. By imitating their movements, he remembers six forms of a Body Yoga Method 14 15 16.
Afterward, a gap-toothed old man identifies their discovery as the Sunlight Yidam’s Anuttarayoga Tantra. He tells Doje that his strong body and powerful desires suit the Warrior Monk Academy. The following morning, Qu Zan helps correct Doje’s remembered movements 16 17.
Ghost-Fallen Guanyin and Promotion
While working in the Ancient Empty Courtyard, Doje teases Rinchen about apparent bloodstains on a statue. The encounter becomes genuinely deadly when Ghost-Fallen Guanyin appears and begins killing monks. Doje survives by following Qu Zan’s instructions, then makes sure the others acknowledge his junior brother’s role in saving them 19 20.
Following the incident, Rinchen announces Doje’s transfer to warrior-monk training. Overwhelmed with happiness, Doje tearfully declares that he has made it. The reality soon proves exhausting: his new schedule includes cold-water bathing, mountain running, stone throwing, timber carrying, wrestling, and weight training 23 24 25.
Training and Yeluo’s Secret
Doje helps identify the mysterious old man as Yeluo, a monastery horse keeper. Initially skeptical that the frail stable worker could be the imposing stranger they met, he witnesses Yeluo’s transformation after drinking liquor. Yeluo later touches Doje’s arm, leaving his memories of their visit—and of Yeluo himself—hazy 28 30 31 38 39.
Meanwhile, Doje progresses in warrior-monk practice. He wins two sparring matches and offers his prize money to help Qu Zan find warmer housing for his family. He subsequently teaches Qu Zan Tummo Meditation and its accompanying Saber Technique 35 37.
Mirror Granny’s Ghost Domain
Doje is drawn into a Ghost Domain while urinating and initially shelters with Dzongben Caiwang’s party and the Rebudian Chieftain Zuo Qian. When Qu Zan reaches them, Doje defends his identity and lends him an outer robe to replace his ruined clothing 48 49.
Rather than wait for rescue, Doje follows Qu Zan into the darkness. He helps examine the ghost’s attacks by noting that victims have died in even numbers. Qu Zan ultimately determines that Mirror Granny kills pairs by passing through the midpoint between them 50 53.
Despite nearly collapsing under the fear, Doje agrees to act as bait beside Qu Zan against a wall. Their positioning allows Qu Zan to seize and suppress Mirror Granny with Indra’s Hand, opening an escape from the domain 53 54.

A monastery-transmitted Yoga Method using breathing, posture, and visualization to awaken spiritual heat and strengthen the body 37.
- Breath circulation: Directs heat into his thighs and calves to brace his stance 37.
- Physical reinforcement: Has won two academy sparring matches, though Qu Zan still knocks him down during a strength demonstration 35 37.
- Assisted instruction: Places a heat-infused palm against Qu Zan’s back to help ignite his tummo fire 37.
- Practice safety: Warns Qu Zan to gather the awakened heat below the navel rather than let it dissipate and cause injury 37.

- Says his successful noodle dish is his first actual attempt, crediting his childhood habit of watching kitchens because he loved good food 38.
Relationships
- Qu Zan / Gyatso — Junior brother, close friend, teacher, and student. Qu Zan helps him with scriptures and Sun Salutation; Doje reciprocates by teaching warrior-monk methods. Their mutual trust makes the Mirror Granny trap possible 9 17 37 54.
- Rinchen — Fellow monk whom Doje mocks for acting superior. Rinchen later announces his promotion and explains empowerment to the newly promoted monks 19 21 23 24.
- Yeluo — Mysterious horse keeper who predicts Doje’s suitability for warrior-monk training. Doje helps investigate him but subsequently loses clear memories of him 17 28 39.
- Zuo Qian — Hostile fellow survivor in the Ghost Domain. Doje challenges his accusations against Qu Zan and distrusts him as a Rebudian Chieftain 49 50.
