Background / History
Duo'erna belongs to the Avalokiteshvara Sect and studied under He Yanjialuo. Her lineage preserved knowledge accumulated by her grandmaster, who acquired extensive scriptural understanding through deep meditative absorption. The grandmaster eventually became unable to awaken, surviving for a time through assisted feeding before wasting away and dying 138 139 156.
He Yanjialuo entered deep meditation to rescue her own master. Although she awakened, Duo'erna became convinced that the person who returned was no longer truly her teacher: her appearance and voice remained unchanged, but her formerly compassionate disposition had altered drastically. He Yanjialuo subsequently departed for Mìdì without saying goodbye 139.
Duo'erna followed her teacher's trail to Mìdì but could not locate her despite numerous divinatory attempts. She suspected He Yanjialuo was deliberately concealing herself. These events left her deeply wary of the Form Realm, and she warned Qu Zan against entering it 139.
At some earlier point, Duo'erna encountered an obstacle mara. A powerful Chöd School practitioner helped her sever it through the Four Maras Severance Realm method. She did not learn the technique herself, since it belonged to another school 137.
By her first appearance, she was paying gold to lodge in a private residence at Corpse Camel Temple. She maintained her independence from the monastery and objected when Steward Jiduo initially approached her as though teaching its monks were an obligation 58.
Appearance
- Build: Tall, with a full, well-proportioned figure and a slender waist 58.
- Face: Sharply defined features, a high nose, deep-set honey-colored eyes, and thick, long eyelashes 58 73.
- Hair: Thick black curls reaching her waist 58.
- Clothing: Loose, plain linen Dharma robes; she also wears silk lounging robes in her private quarters 58 73.
- Accessories and scent: Rings on her middle finger and thumb; Qu Zan notices the fragrance of frankincense and myrrh around her 60.
- Habits: Often goes barefoot on the thick wool carpets covering her residence 59.
Personality
Duo'erna is exacting, proud, and protective of her independence. She demands cleanliness, punctual work, and secrecy concerning her medicinal formulas. Her teaching emphasizes practical foundations: she immediately identifies Qu Zan's mistakes in ingredient preparation, ignition order, and hand gestures rather than being impressed by his fluent chanting alone 58 59.
Her stern manner conceals considerable affection for Qu Zan. Once he becomes a Geshe, she releases him from menial work so that he can devote his time to cultivation. She also safeguards his gold without payment and gradually entrusts him with her lineage's most private teachings 87 132 138 156.
In private, she is playful and easily drawn into teasing exchanges. When Qu Zan tricks her into referring to herself as his master, she temporarily stiffens his tongue with a spell, then makes him provide ghost-hand massages before releasing him 156.
Her grief over He Yanjialuo remains unresolved. Qu Zan's emotion-sight reveals both genuine joy at successfully teaching him and suppressed suffering associated with her missing master. She can quiet these emotions as they arise, but their initial appearance shows that her composure is not an absence of attachment 164.
Duo'erna also prefers a comfortable, secluded life. She enjoys growing flowers, copying scriptures, and teaching rather than traveling through dirty conditions to search for missing god-and-demon fragments 171.
Abilities & Skills
Four Activities and Spellcraft
Duo'erna teaches the Four Activities—Pacifying, Enriching, Magnetizing, and Wrathful—as basic principles that can be combined rather than rigid categories 60.
- Enriching demonstration: Amplifies a finger-snap spark into an enormous pillar of fire, then dismisses it with a wave 60.
- Efficient power use: Explains how skilled mantra application can produce great effects while minimizing Vengeful Ghost resurgence 60.
- Speech restraint: Casts a spell that stiffens Qu Zan's tongue and temporarily prevents him from speaking 156.
- Limits and risks: Advanced applications tax spirit and consciousness; wrathful spells can rebound upon their caster 60.
White-Robed Guanyin
Duo'erna commands White-Robed Guanyin, which she identifies as one of Bodhisattva Guanshiyin's thirty-three orthodox manifestations. Corpse Camel Temple knows she likely controls a Vengeful Ghost, but not its identity or exceptional standing 163.
- Limited authority: Her own rank and cultivation stage restrict how much of Guanyin's power she can use; she is not fully united with the deity 163.
- Prayer perception: Can hear some unseen voices offering prayers when drawing on Guanyin's power 163.
- Ghost suppression: Offers to suppress Qu Zan's rebellious ghost hand in an emergency 62.
- Manifestation: Appears amid cold white mist as a withered female corpse in a white, shroud-like garment, holding a withered lotus and forming the Wish-Granting Mudra atop a rotting lotus pedestal 171.
- Incomplete body: The manifestation retains its symbolic objects despite missing bodily portions. Generations of predecessors assembled it before it passed to Duo'erna; she has found no additional fragments herself 171.
Seed Syllables and Empowerment
Duo'erna knows eighteen seed syllables, but initially has only one mature enough to transmit through empowerment. That syllable was given to her by He Yanjialuo 156.
- “Bam”: Transmits White-Robed Guanyin's seed syllable to Qu Zan through vase empowerment, planting it within his body and mind rather than merely teaching its written form 163 164.
- Associated powers: The syllable supports Seeing Sentient Beings, White Light Calamity-Averting, and Turning Misfortune into Fortune 164.
- Emotion-sight: Perceives emotional states as colors and can suppress her own troubled emotions through mental discipline 164.
- Requirements: Requires suitable Three Secrets cultivation, Vajra Recitation, throat-chakra development, and samaya vows before empowering Qu Zan 156 157 163.
- Continued development: Teaches that the seed's strength depends on understanding sentient beings' suffering, harmonizing the chakras, and accumulating blessings through good deeds 164.
- Language limit: Knows seed syllables but was not taught Sanskrit as a complete language 156.
Mandalas and Spiritual Perception
Duo'erna teaches both drawn mandalas and their spiritual construction 73 136.
- Explains the Great, Samaya, Dharma, and Karma Mandalas 73.
- Teaches Qu Zan to construct a spiritual mandala from a luminous seed syllable after contemplating emptiness 136.
- Describes spiritual mandalas as aids to concentration, cultivation speed, and protection against outside spiritual perception 137.
- Seals an entire room with a mandala before revealing White-Robed Guanyin 171.
- Detects Qu Zan's newly constructed spiritual mandala almost immediately 163.
Esoteric Medicine
Duo'erna processes and sells medicinal materials while training Qu Zan through hands-on preparation 59 60.
- Recognized quality: Geshe Danba prefers her processed red moon stonecrop to the Secret Medicine Institute's supply 60.
- Teaching resources: Provides access to the Compendium of Medicinal Herb Properties and supervises ingredient processing 59 130.
- Practical restraint: Acknowledges that Mianmu, a Medicine Mother, may surpass her in Esoteric Medicine Studies or Tantric medicine 181.
Divination and Ritual Knowledge
- Divination: Has used rituals, astrological calculations, cord divination, lake gazing, and mirror visions to search for He Yanjialuo, without success 139.
- Ritual artifacts: Explains their symbolism, cultivation uses, and potential to acquire power through long association with adepts or deities 137 138.
- Ghost restraint: Recommends a thin, articulated golden gauntlet as a temporary restraint for Qu Zan's ghost hand 62.
- Specialist lore: Explains longevity methods, the ten legendary Heavenly Objects, and the lost art of Ghost Divination 171.
Equipment / Items
- Jambudvipa Ritual Artifact Catalog — A treasured illustrated reference inherited from her grandmaster. Duo'erna tells Qu Zan that he is the only person she has shown it to and asks him to keep its existence secret 138.
- Teaching texts — Gives Qu Zan access to Introduction to Spellcraft, the Compendium of Medicinal Herb Properties, and Essentials of the Mandala 59 73.
- Empowerment implements — Uses a treasure vase, consecrated nectar, a lotus, a White-Robed Guanyin Thangka, and a sand mandala during Qu Zan's empowerment 163 164.
- Private residence — Includes medicine cabinets, heavily carpeted rooms, a secluded two-story building, and a hot-spring-fed courtyard pond with lotuses 58 59 73.
Relationships
- Qu Zan / Gyatso — Attendant who becomes her acknowledged disciple. She values his curiosity and fearless pursuit of the Dharma, eventually transmitting her sect's vows and White-Robed Guanyin's seed syllable to him 58 156 157 164.
- He Yanjialuo — Her master and the central figure in her unresolved search. Duo'erna asks Qu Zan to help find her someday, calling that the greatest repayment he could offer 139 156.
- Unnamed grandmaster — Source of inherited scriptural knowledge and the ritual artifact catalog; died after becoming trapped in deep meditative absorption 138 139.
- Steward Jiduo — Introduces Qu Zan and negotiates the opportunity for him to learn while serving her 58.
- Geshe Danba — Customer who respects her medicinal processing and congratulates her on gaining a promising apprentice 60.
- Mianmu — Medicine Mother whom Duo'erna admires as both beautiful and potentially more accomplished in medicine than herself 181.
