Background / History
Hokage and Yuying’s Teacher
Tobirama leads Konoha after Hashirama Senju’s death. He first meets Itō Yuying outside the Ninja Academy and personally takes him inside. Later, impressed by the boy’s energy training independent of chakra, he accepts Yuying as his disciple and supplies instructions for chakra cultivation and the Three Basic Ninja Techniques 2 7.
His first test of Yuying’s Destructo Disc nearly kills him: the attack slices through his enormous stone wall and leaves a cut on his face. He subsequently teaches Yuying ninjutsu, including his shortened version of Water Dragon Bullet, while becoming a student of Yuying’s Ki methods himself 7 10 12.
As Yuying’s abilities attract attention, Tobirama orders Anbu to protect him without intruding on his daily life. He later reveals that these guards have intercepted numerous assassination attempts, sometimes dying in the process 12 26.
Early War and Battlefield Rescue
Following repeated border provocations after Hashirama’s death, Tobirama personally leads Konoha to a series of victories before returning to oversee the wider war. He initially refuses to deploy Yuying because of his age, citing the village’s founding purpose of keeping children off the front lines 14.
When Yuying later reaches a training bottleneck, Tobirama agrees to seek a comparatively safe battlefield assignment. That protection proves insufficient when the young shinobi encounter the Second Tsuchikage, Ōnoki, and Roshi. Responding through a Flying Thunder God Formula left on Yuying, Tobirama rescues him, confronts the Tsuchikage, and comforts the injured children afterward 30 34 35.
He then teaches Yuying spatial sensing and guards him throughout the prolonged development of Instant Transmission, feeding him Senzu Bean Soup to sustain the effort. After the technique succeeds, Tobirama requests a written account of its method and provides a sealing-technique scroll 35.
Negotiations and War with Kumogakure
Tobirama uses Konoha’s military advantage to force separate concessions from the Second Raikage and the faction led by Kinkaku and Ginkaku. He injures the Raikage, severs the Eight-Tails jinchūriki B’s arm, and releases B’s seal. His demands from the brothers include the Six Paths Tools, two hundred million in compensation, and one thousand jin of chakra metal 42.
Rather than immediately eliminating both brothers, he plans to exploit their ideological conflict with the Raikage to keep Kumogakure divided. When their payment is five hundred jin short, he rejects the Raikage’s offer to cover it and orders Danzō to cut off Ginkaku’s arm before releasing them 42.
After Yuying eventually kills the Raikage and both brothers, Tobirama organizes Konoha’s response. He appoints Hiruzen commander-in-chief against Kumogakure, Danzō deputy commander, and separate forces to watch Iwagakure. Yuying receives responsibility for enemy Kage-level fighters and jinchūriki 65.
Training Reforms and International Exchanges
Tobirama plans a specialized department headed by Yuying and answerable only to the Hokage. This becomes the Konoha Elite Training Base, intended to recruit exceptional Academy students and selected jōnin under strict security and loyalty requirements 36 46.
He also advances international training arrangements. At the Five Kage Summit, he proposes joint Chunin Ninja Exams every three years, with A-, B-, and C-rank ninjutsu awarded to the top three competitors. He refuses requests to include Yuying’s techniques among those prizes 78 79.
After information about the Landscape and Rivers State Guardian Diagram leaks, Tobirama negotiates access to its training realm in exchange for materials. Entry allotments depend on contributions, with a six-person cap per village; he separately permits two Kage from each village to enter after the exams. He gives the villages one month to prepare their supplies 84 87.
Secret-Realm Expeditions
Inside the Diagram, Tobirama discovers that Ki can destroy Phantom Demon Beasts resistant to his weapons and elemental ninjutsu. He later undergoes a major breakthrough while fighting in the Forest of Despair 99 101.
His new strength encourages an expedition into the Endless Sea of Blood, where an immense insect swarm nearly eats him alive. He escapes through Flying Thunder God, and Hiruzen and Danzō carry him out for Yuying to heal with a Senzu Bean 102 103.
On a later visit, he returns with medical techniques, medicine, and Senzu Beans. Despite further gains, giant sea beasts and corrosive, exploding insects force repeated retreats. A regenerating tree demon also defeats his attempts to overcome it through force and teleportation 150 151 152 154 155.
Family Affairs and the Ōtsutsuki Threat
Tobirama encourages Tsunade’s relationship with Yuying and works with Mito Uzumaki to press them toward marriage. After detecting Tsunade’s pregnancy by checking her pulse, he schedules their wedding for the day after tomorrow 47 166.
When Mito’s Nine-Tails seal deteriorates, Tobirama and Yuying reinforce it. Tobirama suspects Ōtsutsuki Pushi’s interference, and the family agrees that Yuying can subdue the Nine-Tails rather than requiring another jinchūriki. Mito dies shortly afterward 169.
During Urashiki Ōtsutsuki’s attack on Konoha, Tobirama redirects a massive chakra projectile away from the village and leads its defenders in an attempt to hold out until Yuying returns. Urashiki kills him by tearing out his heart before he can eat a Senzu Bean 174.
Retirement
Tobirama subsequently appears alive and retired, with Hiruzen serving as Third Hokage. He redirects village business to his successor and devotes himself to training, saying that retirement makes him feel several years younger. When Yuying announces plans for an extended journey, Tobirama asks him to return soon 178.
Personality
Tobirama treats Konoha’s younger generation as the village’s future, but distinguishes talent from survivability. He initially shields Yuying from war, later acknowledges that excessive protection can hinder growth, and arranges practical experience with precautions. After the children’s disastrous encounter with Iwagakure, he comforts them individually rather than condemning their defeat 14 26 30 34.
His willingness to learn from his own disciple contrasts with his pride as a teacher. He openly asks Yuying to teach him Ki, seeks private lessons, and refuses to fall behind Hiruzen and Danzō. Village administration nevertheless repeatedly interrupts his training 12 13 23 46.
He is ruthless in negotiations and protective of Konoha’s technical advantages. His distrust of the Uchiha initially leads him to oppose allowing Uchiha Hanyue to cultivate Ki; he relents only after Yuying vouches for Hanyue and the clan pays a substantial price 24 42 79.
Although normally described as cold and aloof, he frequently laughs, boasts about his disciple, and enjoys teasing others. After burning his mouth on hot tea, he jokingly threatens an Anbu witness to preserve his dignified image 31 37 77 85.
Abilities & Skills
Flying Thunder God and Space-Time Ninjutsu
Tobirama teleports through marked spatial coordinates and uses the technique for combat, rescue, and group transportation 35 42 51.
- Emergency response: A formula placed on Yuying allows him to reach the boy when it is activated 35.
- Flying Thunder God Slash: Repeated teleportation lets him evade B’s counterattack and sever his arm 42.
- Passenger transport: Carries Hiruzen and Danzō, and later rescues an injured group from the Endless Sea of Blood 51 152.
- Flying Thunder God: Reverse Thunder: Redirects Urashiki’s giant chakra ball to Konoha’s distant Back Mountain 174.
- Limits: His version has a distance limit, unlike Yuying’s Instant Transmission as described during its development. Mobility alone cannot overcome an opponent whose weakness he cannot identify 35 154.
Ki Techniques and Flight
After learning Ki from Yuying, Tobirama incorporates it into both ranged attacks and movement 12 42 46.
- Energy Wave: Penetrates the Second Raikage’s Lightning Armor and destroys large numbers of Blood Sea insects 42 102.
- Ki Blasts: Destroy Phantom Demon Beasts that withstand his conventional attacks. After his breakthrough, a single blast devastates a ten-kilometer radius 99 101.
- Flight: Supports routine travel, aerial combat, and seated midair cultivation 46 99 101.
- Limits: Before his major breakthrough, a short barrage against Phantom Demon Beasts exhausts him to the point of collapse. Later gains still leave him outmatched by the Blood Sea’s stronger inhabitants and Urashiki 99 152 161.
Elemental Ninjutsu
Tobirama demonstrates large-scale Earth and Water Release and can substantially reduce a technique’s hand-seal requirements 7 10 101.
- Earth Release: Earth Shaking Arm Technique: Raises an enormous stone wall for Yuying’s attack demonstration 7.
- Earth Release: Earth Spear: Produces a massive earthen spear, although a Phantom Demon Beast easily breaks it 99.
- Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique: Simplifies the original forty-four seals to three and teaches that version to Yuying 10.
- Water Release: Great Waterfall Technique: Quenches the lava created by his post-breakthrough Ki Blast 101.
Sealing and Medical Techniques
Tobirama manipulates chakra seals and learns medical ninjutsu to support dangerous expeditions 42 150.
- Seals Kinkaku and Ginkaku’s chakra and deliberately releases B’s Eight-Tails seal 42.
- Helps reinforce Mito Uzumaki’s failing Nine-Tails seal 169.
- Learns Mystical Palm Technique between secret-realm visits, conserving Senzu Beans for emergencies 150.
- Identifies Tsunade’s pregnancy through a pulse examination 166.
Research and Instruction
Tobirama researches forbidden techniques, training equipment, and methods for preserving or reproducing valuable resources 35 46 144.
- Spatial instruction: His account of learning to reach a Flying Thunder God Formula helps Yuying understand how to cross the spatial barrier 35.
- Gravity chamber: Collaborates with Orochimaru on a Shinobi World version, producing a test model 46.
- Senzu cultivation: Experiments unsuccessfully with growing Senzu Beans before receiving cultivation-specific Ultra Divine Water from Yuying 35.
- Impure World Reincarnation: Researched the technique, which Yuying distinguishes from the true resurrection possible through the original stones 144.
- Senjutsu limitation: Previously attempted to learn Senjutsu but failed 21.
Combat Judgment and Command
Tobirama’s battlefield experience allows him to anticipate Yuying’s high-speed approach during sparring. As Hokage, he assigns commanders, distributes reinforcements, and manages simultaneous threats from different villages 15 37 65.
- Recognizes the danger of the students’ nearly invisible water threads and stops Danzō from moving into them, demonstrating their lethality with a wild boar 137.
- Investigates candidates before assigning them to Yuying, considering their determination as well as their classroom performance and ancestry 115.
- Explicitly prioritizes delaying Urashiki and protecting the village rather than treating the battle as an unrestricted duel 174.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Flying Thunder God Kunai — Thrown markers used to set up teleportation attacks and enter dangerous areas 42 102.
- Senzu Beans and Senzu Bean Soup — Emergency recovery supplies and support for prolonged training. Their use requires time: Urashiki kills him before he can consume one 35 103 150 174.
- Ultra Divine Water — Receives a version specifically intended for watering Senzu Beans; its other functions have been removed 35.
- Medical supplies — Brings medicine on later secret-realm expeditions to reduce dependence on Senzu Beans 150.
