Personality

Danzō is intensely competitive with Hiruzen, especially over Tobirama’s approval. He resents Hiruzen’s note-taking and flattery, celebrates opportunities to outshine him, and explicitly resolves to train his way to the Hokage position. Their rivalry also fuels his training: discovering that Hiruzen has secretly mastered the Energy Wave leaves him furious 9 10 14 23 33.

His jealousy does not outweigh his attachment to his comrades. When Hiruzen is gravely wounded by Ōnoki, Danzō fights toward him without regard for his own safety. He later cries after believing Yuying has sacrificed himself against Kokuō, then hides his tears by claiming that dirt entered his eyes 28 39.

He is proud and easily embarrassed, but capable of recognizing talent. After Qingliu, Yumengliang, and Hana repeatedly injure and humiliate him, he still praises their techniques and accepts responsibility for their practical training. A year later, he describes mentoring them as his duty and acknowledges that they have helped him as well 136 137 138 146.

Danzō can also be more cautious than Hiruzen. During the Gravity Chamber accident, he stops Hiruzen from rushing into the chamber and sends him to fetch Yuying instead. In village planning, he warns that openly searching for the training realm’s missing materials could alert other villages 45 83.

Wind Release

Wind Release is Danzō’s principal demonstrated ninjutsu specialty, used for direct attacks, battlefield control, and cooperation with Hiruzen 28 39 41 137 138.

• Vacuum Sphere, Vacuum Serial Waves, and Great Serial Bullets: Used during the pursuit and beating of Ōnoki after Danzō’s recovery 28.
• Wind blades: Knock Ginkaku away and cut wounds across his body, although Ginkaku’s red chakra rapidly heals the damage 41.
• Combined Wind Release: Temporarily suppresses Kokuō’s corrosive mist, allowing Yuying to evacuate endangered ninja 39.

History

Tobirama’s Disciple

Danzō belongs to Tobirama Senju’s circle of disciples alongside Hiruzen, Kagami, Torifu, Koharu, and Homura. As border tensions rise, Tobirama sends Danzō, Hiruzen, and Kagami to investigate the Land of Wind frontier, authorizing attacks if necessary 14.

After Yuying is hospitalized with severe injuries, Danzō and Hiruzen guard his room through the night under Tobirama’s instructions. Danzō recognizes the importance of Yuying’s unusual strength and concludes that they should build a good relationship with their junior disciple 20 21.

His questions about Yuying’s unexplained abilities earn Tobirama’s reprimand and an order to copy the Will of the Hokage one thousand times. He subsequently joins Hiruzen in eavesdropping on Yuying’s training lessons, but their initial attempts produce only stronger physiques 22 23.

Battles Against Iwagakure

Danzō helps escort Ambassador Kawamura Yimu to the Capital of Fire. The mission becomes a crisis when Ōnoki’s forces ambush the party and inflict severe injuries on both senior disciples. After Yuying supplies Senzu Beans, Danzō and Hiruzen recover, protect him, and force Ōnoki to retreat 27 28.

On a later expedition through the Land of Grass, Danzō helps lead Konoha’s force and binds Roshi after Kagami, Torifu, and Hiruzen subdue him. Mū’s arrival reverses the battle: his clone cripples Danzō’s hands, and the Second Tsuchikage orders Roshi to kill him and Hiruzen 32 33.

During the confrontation with the Five-Tails, Danzō helps contain Kokuō’s mist and pursues him toward Konoha’s camp. When Yuying teleports Kokuō away, Danzō believes his junior has died and struggles to conceal his tears upon Yuying’s safe return 39.

Kumogakure Campaign

Danzō fights Ginkaku but is nearly killed after Ginkaku releases red chakra. Yuying rescues and heals him; Danzō subsequently intercepts another attack to protect Yuying while he prepares Time Stop 40 41.

After Konoha mobilizes against Kumogakure, Danzō works alongside commander-in-chief Hiruzen. He investigates the explosion caused by Tsunade’s group, identifies the defeated Nagu Yi, and brings the sealed prisoner back to camp. When the Raikage personally enters the campaign, Hiruzen leaves Danzō in command of the camp 65 69 73.

Secret-Realm Training

Danzō joins Tobirama and Hiruzen in the Landscape and Rivers State Guardian Diagram’s trials. Badly wounded and ashamed of becoming a burden, he offers to withdraw. Tobirama refuses to leave him behind, warning that an early exit would prevent reentry for three years 99.

After watching Hiruzen break through, Danzō charges into the Demon Beasts and achieves his own breakthrough. The group then advances toward the Endless Sea of Blood 102.

During later training, Danzō escapes a swamp tentacle with assistance from Tobirama’s Destructo Discs, then uses Ki Blades to free the others. Against the regenerating tree demons, however, he and the other senior shinobi remain unable to gain the upper hand 153 155.

Leading Yuying’s Students

While Yuying is occupied at the Training Base, Tobirama assigns Qingliu, Yumengliang, and Hana to Danzō for a year of missions. Danzō first tests them by ordering them to attack with killing intent 135 136.

His underestimation nearly proves fatal. The students pierce him with a lightning net, turn water needles inside his bloodstream into blood spikes, sever an arm, and surround him with clones he cannot strike. After repeated treatment with Senzu Bean Soup, he finally defeats them with a large Wind Release attack and approves their abilities 136 137 138.

A year later, the students praise his instruction when they reunite with Yuying. Yuying then drags the squad into an extravagant meal at Yakiniku Q, leaving Danzō and his companions working off the bill. Tobirama also assigns Danzō and Hiruzen to oversee the Chunin Ninja Exams in the Land of Wind 146.

Clan Affairs and Hiruzen’s Hokageship

Under pressure from his clan head, Danzō negotiates with Hiruzen to secure a marriage match between one of their younger comrades and a Shimura woman. He must accept a series of unequal agreements to prevent both available matches from going to Sarutobi women 167.

After Hiruzen becomes Hokage, Danzō criticizes his decision to let Yuying leave the recently stabilized village. Hiruzen answers, “Danzo, I’m the Hokage,” prompting Danzō’s angry reply that he will regret it 178.
