A little figure in Xu Wang's mind gave the old man a thumbs-up. Well said, old man.
Xu Wang smiled at the four people before him, his meaning perfectly clear: either hand over the money or keep it to yourselves!
The smiles on Pei Yanchuan's father and Mu Tingting's faces stiffened. Ever since Pei Yanchuan took over the company, their family of four had been left with neither shares nor jobs. They were now living solely off the few investments and properties under their names. Asking them for money now was practically asking for their lives.
Pei Yanchuan's father shot Mu Tingting a fierce glare.
Receiving her husband's look, Mu Tingting took a bank card out of her little handbag, however unwilling she felt.
"Xu Wang, this is a little something from Mom and Dad." Mu Tingting held the card out to Xu Wang, her heart aching as though it were being cut by a knife.
"Thanks." Without the slightest hesitation, Xu Wang reached out, pinched most of the bank card between his thumb and forefinger, and tugged it toward himself.
The veins on Mu Tingting's hand nearly bulged out, and her expression looked particularly strained.
Pop!
His smile unchanged, Xu Wang pulled the card over. As he lowered his hand, he twirled it back and forth between his fingers as though playing with a card.
Mu Tingting happened to have her head lowered and caught the whole thing perfectly. Her knife-sliced heart was bleeding.
But even though the two had given him a first-meeting gift, Xu Wang never once addressed them as his parents.
Xu Wang sat on the sofa with Pei Yanchuan, their bodies close together, looking as though they got along very well.
Pei Feng looked at Xu Wang thoughtfully. Was there something special about this omega that made his cold, unapproachable older brother so indulgent of his closeness?
Pei Yan still wore a disdainful expression as she looked at Xu Wang. She did not understand why Pei Yanchuan had agreed to marry an omega from a minor family.
Xu Wang could not be bothered with either of them. After all, he still had to maintain his delicate persona in public. The next time they met with no one around, they could have a little clash.
But what Xu Wang had never expected was that the other party would actually go out of his way to come looking for trouble.
Xu Wang strolled out of the washroom. He had to admit that the Pei family's old residence was truly stately and imposing, decorated throughout in traditional Chinese style with a touch of modern Chinese design.
Xu Wang looked at the beautiful scenery outside the door before him. There was a small pond in the courtyard, and sofa seating had been placed on the steps beside it specifically for people to rest.
Xu Wang slid open the black-framed door before him. The sound of flowing water came from the pond, occasionally accompanied by the splash of a koi leaping out and slapping the surface.
Just as Xu Wang was listening to this lovely moment, someone arrived to ruin the mood.
Pei Feng had entered the courtyard at some point, an exquisite slingshot in his hand. As he pulled it back, a wooden pellet shot toward Xu Wang with a whoosh.
Xu Wang simply stepped back. The wooden pellet hit the wall, then fell onto the rug.
The pellet had originally been aimed at Xu Wang's arm. Judging by its force, if it had hit him, it would not have caused a serious injury, but bruising would have been no problem.
Xu Wang took a deep breath and raised his head. Pei Feng had already walked up to him.
Pei Feng looked at the delicate, frail omega before him with an ill-intentioned expression.
"Xu Wang, right? Tell me, what did you see in my older brother? He's cold and unapproachable, and he doesn't know how to make you happy. Can you really be happy with someone so boring?"
As Pei Feng spoke, he reached out to stroke Xu Wang's face.
Looking at the arm reaching toward him, Xu Wang's lips curved into an excited smile. He really was getting a little tired after playing weak for so long. Now that a ready-made punching bag had delivered himself to his door, wouldn't it be a waste not to use him?
Xu Wang grabbed his wrist, yanked him toward himself, then twisted his arm behind his back.
There was a crack, and Pei Feng's face contorted. With his arm twisted behind him, he turned from facing Xu Wang to having his back toward him.
Xu Wang swiftly snatched the slingshot from his waist with his other hand, then raised his leg and kicked him square in the middle of his backside.
"Screw you! Trying to get handsy with me? You must have a death wish."
Xu Wang's kick sent Pei Feng hurtling forward. He finally managed to steady himself on his hands and knees, but the momentum of his upper body sent his entire head plunging into the pond.
Gurgle, gurgle... splash!
The koi were startled by this sudden turn of events, too. One large koi nearby slapped its tail straight across Pei Feng's face.
With one hand temporarily unable to exert any strength, Pei Feng could only brace himself with the other and pull his head out. Like a drowned rat, he kept gasping for fresh air. A close look would even reveal a red mark beside his right cheek.
Xu Wang had not moved from his spot. He picked up the wooden pellet from the rug and toyed with the slingshot in his right hand. Back when he lived in the village, he had long since mastered this thing. Thinking about it made him feel a little nostalgic. After all, Xu Wang had only been a ten-year-old child then.
Xu Wang pinched the wooden pellet into the slingshot and began drawing it back, gathering strength in his fair arm.
Xu Wang aimed in Pei Feng's direction and gently closed his left eye, a sharp gleam flashing through his right.
Pei Feng had just recovered and turned around when he saw Xu Wang aiming at him.
Pei Feng did not panic. After all, as far as he knew, omegas had limited strength, and his slingshot was made entirely of heavy-duty materials. Even if Xu Wang was strong enough to draw it, it certainly would not shoot very far.
"Xu Wang, stop overestimating yourself..."
Bang!
The rest of Pei Feng's words lodged in his throat. He stared between his legs in disbelief. Just a little closer, just a little closer, and his happiness for the rest of his life would have been gone...
Xu Wang wore a satisfied smile. Woo-hoo! That's me for you.
Looking at Pei Feng's terrified expression, Xu Wang raised the slingshot again. This time, he had nothing in his hand and merely drew back the band.
Pei Feng recoiled in fright, forgetting that the pond was right behind him. As he moved both hands backward, there was nothing to brace against, and he toppled backward into the pond.
Because the Pei family mansion was particularly large and Xu Wang was quite far from the living room, none of the people there heard the commotion.
Xu Wang slowly walked to the edge of the pond just as Pei Feng's head emerged.
Xu Wang crouched down and looked at the drenched Pei Feng before him.
Looking at Xu Wang, Pei Feng could not help trembling all over. "S-sister-in-law..."
Xu Wang curled his lip. "Call me boss."
"B-boss..." Pei Feng swallowed.
Just as Xu Wang was about to keep playing, Pei Yanchuan's cool voice suddenly called out from nearby.
"Xu Wang."
"Darling, I'm here." At the sound of Pei Yanchuan's voice, Xu Wang's playful expression instantly changed. He stood and ran toward Pei Yanchuan with a frightened look on his face.
Pei Feng watched from the pond, utterly dumbfounded.
Pei Yanchuan had barely entered the courtyard when Xu Wang tightly hugged his right arm.
Pei Yanchuan only had to lower his head to see Xu Wang's aggrieved expression.
"What's wrong? What happened?" Pei Yanchuan looked a little hesitant, but in the end, he still reached out and put an arm around Xu Wang.
Pei Yanchuan's voice was the same as always, but Xu Wang could hear in his tone that he intended to stand up for him.
"He shot at me with a slingshot." Xu Wang looked toward a spot nearby with ill intent.
Pei Yanchuan followed his gaze.
There was Pei Feng, climbing out of the pond soaking wet, with an exquisitely crafted slingshot lying right beside his hand.
