Power Progression
Mu Bai cultivates physical strength, Soul Power, and mental power alongside the immortal methods of the Flying Immortal Scripture. These paths do not always advance together 41 126.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pear Blossom Soul Mark formed | 1 | Engraves a single pear-blossom petal on his soul rather than completing the ancestral mark expected by his tribe. Experiences visions of recurring lives with a woman in white. |
| Middle beginner-level Soul Power | 8 | Reaches this stage through a year of pill refining, Spirit-Tempering Art practice, and physical training. |
| Peak initial-level Soul Power and physique | 17 | Achieved after six months of forest cultivation; Divine Thought Pills also bring his mental power close to a breakthrough. |
| Level-two mental power | 17 | The golden eagle’s sonic attack shocks his mind-spirit and triggers his breakthrough. He subsequently brands and subdues the eagle. |
| Qi-refining threshold bypassed | 18 | His level-two mental power lets him directly perceive and absorb Heaven and Earth Essence Qi. Initially, a single Essence Light attack exhausts his stored reserve. |
| Middle second-level physical strength | 23 | Thunder Pool tempering expels bodily impurities. A punch carries fifty to sixty thousand stone of force. |
| Second-level Soul Power confirmed | 41 | Soul Power and mental power are both at the second level. Combining them with his physique gives him combat strength comparable to a peak second-level cultivator. |
| Liquid essence / Origin Power | 60 | Absorbed essence becomes a milky-white liquid within his meridians. Condensing it into a core remains his next major objective. |
| Peak second-level physique and mental power | 91 | Gains from the Sword Sect trials bring both paths to the second-level peak, with combat strength comparable to an early third-level expert. |
| Third-level Mighty Realm entered | 117 | Explicitly describes himself as having just entered the third-level mighty realm after returning from the Fallen Spirits Ruins. |
| Third Soul Mark: Silver-Backed Ape | 125 | Completes the inscription after three days, establishing his third-level Soul Power cultivation. |
| Early third-level Soul Power and spiritual power; physique near Xiu Zun | 130 | After extended cultivation in Silver Frost Forest, his body approaches Flesh Body Xiu Zun strength; combined methods allow him to kill ordinary fourth-tier beasts. |
| Middle third-level mental power | 172 | Identified during his battle against Qing Cang; his Soul Power remains at the early third level. |
| Flesh Body Xiu Zun | 186 | His transformed flesh turns fully golden and reaches a million shi of physical strength. |
| Further physical growth; mental power near third-level peak | 251 | Exceeds a million shi without his golden transformation. Mental power approaches a million shi, while Soul Power still requires another step to formally reach the peak. |
| Soul Power at Xiu Zun Realm | 259 | Refines three Supreme Venerable Pills and uses one to break through the realm barrier. |
| Law of Time comprehended; Samsara Great Dao begins to bud | 271 | Retaining his memories through countless reincarnations in Dai Long’s Inner World grants early insight into time and reincarnation. His Xiu Zun cultivation still limits their practical use. |
| Physique nearly at peak Xiu Zun | 284 | Almost a year of heat tempering strengthens his body. Refining his three demons also produces protective Demonic Qi, though not yet tangible armor. |
| Mental power approaching ten million stone | 293 | Refining cultivators’ minds and souls accelerates his growth, but leaves hidden dangers. |
| Soul Spirit powers integrated into his own body | 300 | True Person Chihuo teaches him to add the Silver-Backed Ape’s strength to his own and extend the principle to his other Soul Spirits. |
| Soul Spirit avatar created | 322 | Uses the Nine-Lives Technique to place a strand of mind-spirit into the Silver-Backed Ape Soul Mark. |
| Five Elements Inner Core and Void Return Stage confirmed | 363 | Develops “borrowing and returning” elemental power. Independently reaches insights resembling the Scripture’s later Dao Refining teachings. |
| Three-colored realm embryo formed | 382 | Desperately consuming many pills causes all three powers to break their shackles and merge into a fist-sized embryo in his dantian. |
| Inner World established by this point | 476 | Conducts ten years of spatial experiments inside his Void Beast Inner World, without discovering the Celestial Person Evolution Grand Formation’s true principle. |
| Dao Ling Realm; Dao Integration Stage | 511 | A Dao pattern unites his five elemental attributes with the Origin Realm’s five elements. His Heavenly Demon Body can rival a Dao Ling, and his World Force can unleash Dao Arts. |
| Further Samsara Great Dao breakthrough | 528 | Breaks another conceptual shackle while fighting Lu Changlin, manifesting a fleeting Gu Chen figure whose sword strikes across space and time. |
| Revival through the wills of two realms | 640 | Receives the wills of the Human-and-Beast Realm and Yin-Death Realm, overpowers Li Muxue, and devours her remaining will in the Six Heavens. No new realm title is specified. |
Background / History
Childhood in the Haibei Tribe
Hai Ya brought Mu Bai to the Haibei Tribe from the Vast Dao Sea as an infant. Recognizing his unusually powerful soul, the patriarch devoted the tribe’s resources to raising him. Mu Bai grew up considering every tribesperson family, although he never learned who his birth parents were 2 6 245.
His first Soul Mark disappointed the tribe: instead of the ancestral spirit’s mark, he formed a single pear-blossom petal. Hai Chen and Hai Ang nevertheless continued to believe in him. Mu Bai began studying medicinal herbs under Hai Quan, memorizing the tribe’s entire stock in little more than ten days 1 2.
The Artifact Spirit Ancestor subsequently taught him alchemy. Mu Bai treated ordinary injuries and illnesses before successfully refining Soul-Gathering Pills. Hai Ang concealed his identity as an alchemist to protect the still-vulnerable tribe. When Hai Ya was poisoned, Mu Bai supplied pills that checked the poison’s spread 2 6.
Destruction of the Tribe
After the Haibei Tribe’s destruction, Mu Bai personally carried the bodies into the mountains and dug their grave by hand. Hai Ya had already been reduced to ash. Finding no bodies belonging to Hai Zhan, Hai Chen, and several others, Mu Bai held to the belief that they had survived 16.
He declined to return to the Merchant Guild with Mi Yan and instead pursued strength alone. Months of hunting, gathering herbs, and fighting stronger beasts left him scarred but experienced. His training was deliberate rather than reckless: he initially avoided entering Silver Frost Forest before reaching level two 16 17.
Spirit Taming Sect and Northern Plains
Mu Bai accepted Qing Mao’s elder token and responsibility for his household. Despite acquiring his position unusually easily, he initially tried to guide those who provoked him rather than kill them. Repeated ambushes and sect politics gradually made him less forgiving toward enemies 29 40 41.
An elderly Divine Cultivator saved him from Mo Deqian’s ambush and later detonated his spirit palace to kill Lin Chuan. Mu Bai mourned the old man and kept a white feather. His subsequent imprisonment reinforced how little protection his elder status offered without dependable backing 45 46.
During his travels, he became close friends with Chen Shichong and risked himself seeking an antidote for him. At the Sword Sect, Mu Bai completed the Hundred Puppet Path in five days and five nights, destroying its final puppet despite catastrophic arm injuries 70 86.
In the Fallen Spirits Ruins, Mu Bai and his disciple Zuo Lin survived an assassination attempt by Cheng Liang and Zhao Xing. They turned the ruins’ lightning against their attackers and returned with a recording exposing Zhou Dechen’s involvement 117.
Revenge and the Search for Survivors
Mu Bai entered the White Wolf Tribe under the name Yu Yi while pursuing those connected to his tribe’s destruction. His confrontation with Wu Daoyi culminated in a brutal battle in Silver Frost Forest, where Wu Huan intervened to save him and was killed 135 142 146 154.
He later killed Qing Mang, while Qing Cang confessed and took his own life. Mu Bai spared the kneeling Qinghe tribespeople and hung the two leaders’ heads above the Haibei Tribe’s gate. He remained among the ruins for a day and a night before Du Xiang caught up with him 172.
His search also brought reunions and painful discoveries. Hai Zhan recognized him immediately when they met again after more than a decade. Mu Bai later discovered that Elder Jiahui was Ling’er, but she would not meet him; Caiwei explained that approaching her could worsen her circumstances 175 203.
War and the Beast Territory
During the Human–Beast war, Mu Bai protected Wu Meng and Xing Yun from masked attackers. His insistence on repaying an enemy’s earlier righteousness led him to accept a sword wound before killing Horse-Face 235.
After another unjust imprisonment, Du Xiang attempted to murder him in his cell. Mu Bai shattered his cangue and nearly beat Du Xiang to death before Lu Ling intervened. He then left for the Beast Territory to temper himself 252.
There, his struggle expanded beyond personal revenge: he led humans fighting for freedom, dignity, and their descendants’ future. He later held off Jiang Ya, Yin Hong, and Xue Ping while Zhou Qilong evacuated a hundred thousand cultivators. Gravely wounded and unconscious, he was secretly rescued by Xing Yuan 280 287.
Hu Meier initially remained an enemy. Mu Bai forced her to surrender the Nine-Lives Technique, later branded her mind, and demanded three hundred years of service. Their subsequent travels and shared dangers changed her feelings toward him 322 327 348.
Return to Eastern Ridge and Sacred Land Conflicts
Returning to Eastern Ridge, Mu Bai reunited with Mu Lan Pavilion’s members and Xing Yun. Their happiness was interrupted by news that Wu Meng had disappeared on the day he left the region 359 361.
He killed Zhou Detai and handed the Spirit Command Sword to Zhou Dekai, who had agreed to become sect master. When greater powers threatened him, Mu Bai chose to leave rather than make his companions share the danger 376 377.
The capture of Xing Yun and Hu Meier forced him into negotiations with the Kunling Sect. Their subsequent suffering drove his desperate breakthrough into a three-colored realm embryo and left him blaming himself for having delayed his revenge against the Eastern Nether Great Tribe 382 385 386 395.
While living under the identity of Qianyuan Sacred Land’s Third Holy Son, he learned that the Eastern Nether Great Tribe and White Wolf Tribe had been slaughtered. He suspected Hai Chen and willingly bore public blame rather than expose his brother 445.
Reincarnation and the Samsara Great Dao
The pear-blossom visions of his childhood returned as increasingly vivid experiences of reincarnation. With Hong Luo’s help, Mu Bai retained his memories through Dai Long’s Inner World and began comprehending time and samsara before possessing the cultivation needed to wield them fully 1 258 271.
Later recollections included his life as Gu Chen and repeated lives with a woman in white, including Ruohua. Li Muxue accompanied him through a hundred reincarnations. After reaching Dao Ling and Dao Integration, Mu Bai thanked her for that companionship but declared that neither owed the other anything further 507 509 511.
Coalition Command and Final Departure
Mu Bai revisited the Spirit Taming Sect, declined the position of Spirit Command Grand Elder, and accepted his preserved Elder Token instead. One of his clones later returned to the Haibei Tribe’s homeland—not to avenge it, but to come home 552 554.
Rao Lin appointed him commander of the Northern Plains’ Human Race Coalition Army. In his first campaign, Mu Bai drew the Qianyuan forces into a surprise battle and trapped an Evil Demon Venerable inside his Void Beast Realm while the allied armies attacked 581.
On the Sixth Heaven, he reunited with Hai Chen and Ling’er and collected Six-Heaven Thunder Liquid before returning to the Northern Plains despite severe injuries 593.
In the final conflict, Li Muxue devoured his fortune and seized his Dao Arts. Mu Bai initially offered little resistance in acknowledgment of their shared lifetimes, but revived with the wills of two realms and defeated her. He spared the Origin Realm, entrusted its future to Qingtian, and departed with the auras of his old companions. They lived together peacefully through lifetimes that ended and began anew 640.
Appearance
- Original appearance: A clear-eyed youth who matures into a tall, graceful young man with striking, sharply defined features 83 132 174.
- Soul Marks: A single pear-blossom petal on his right arm; later marks include the Silver-Backed Ape at his third soul position 125 258.
- Clothing: Frequently wears blue robes. One elaborate robe is covered in golden script and shimmering formations 110 132.
- Transformed body: Initially shines silver with faint golden threads; later becomes fully golden as his physical cultivation advances 153 186.
- Appearance changing: Can genuinely alter his features and physique through thought, rather than merely using illusions or medicinal disguises 267 405.
- Large-scale battle form: Can grow hundreds of zhang tall and manifest golden wings 581.
Personality
Mu Bai’s pursuit of strength begins with a desire to protect his loved ones rather than watch them sacrifice themselves for him. His affection extends beyond blood ties: the Haibei tribespeople, Qing Mao’s household, and his companions at Mu Lan Pavilion all become forms of family to him 6 7 50 181.
He is tenacious and methodical. Even when expecting to die pursuing revenge, he refuses to abandon the day’s cultivation. His caution also survives his growing reputation: he repeatedly conceals his identity, avoids unnecessary attention, and recognizes when stronger opponents are beyond him 29 54 155 405.
His kindness does not prevent ruthlessness. Initially inclined to lecture and reform opponents, he becomes decisive in killing persistent enemies. Nevertheless, he distinguishes vengeance from indiscriminate slaughter, sparing the Qinghe tribespeople after dealing with their leaders 40 110 172.
Mu Bai also has an exceptional love of wealth and treasure, carrying multiple storage bags so that he never has to abandon a valuable find. This acquisitiveness coexists with generosity toward friends, elders, and dependents 107 179 259 552.
Despite his adoptive family’s love, he retains a deep loneliness over his unknown parents. His eventual preference for an ordinary life among loved ones reflects a longing repeatedly expressed during his travels and reincarnations 83 245 468 640.
