Background and History
Early Travels and Meeting Mu Bai
Chen Shichong grew up in the powerful Chen Household of the Sword Sect. His father, Chen Jianli, governed Third Peak, while both Chen Jianli and his uncle Chen Jianduan served as Xiu Zun elders. Despite that background, he cultivated among ordinary inner disciples. He eventually left for the Eastern Ridge to seek experience and overcome his body-refinement bottleneck 84 85.
After completing an outside assignment, he investigated Biyou Peak in hopes of finding a cultivation opportunity. There, the Yellow Weasel Bride bewitched him through the appearance of a beautiful lotus-picker. He forgot his family and sect and nearly became her husband before Mu Bai rescued him 61 84.
He invited Mu Bai to the Northern Plains and offered to help him obtain a suitable Soul Soldier. Their journey included hunting Silver Swordfish at Ice Lake, drinking together, and coordinating sword formations with Mu Bai’s mental attacks 62 63.
Earthfire City
In Earthfire City, Chen Shichong gathered information about the volcanic eruption and its treasures while arranging accommodation for himself and Mu Bai. Their stay became dangerous when a sinister attacker poisoned his shoulder with multiplying green insects. Mu Bai used fresh sand-wolf blood to slow their spread 65 69.
Luo Cheng and Luo Qian later pursued the pair for the Ice-Fire Pill. Chen Shichong used a strengthening pill and the Autumn Sun Sword’s stored divided-soul power to sever Luo Cheng’s arm. When Gusu Wan’er intervened and collapsed from her wounds, he supported her and lent Mu Bai his sword for the final confrontation 74.
His family connections also helped clear accusations that he and Mu Bai were accomplices of the corpse-plague controllers. Revealing himself as Chen Jianli’s son and Chen Jianduan’s nephew immediately changed Ji Yang’s treatment of them 75.
Sword Sect Trials and the Ice Ruins
Upon returning home, Chen Shichong introduced Mu Bai to his family as a brother. He then challenged the Hundred Puppet Path, defeating all one hundred puppets despite severe injuries and exhaustion. The achievement silenced cultivators who had dismissed his reputation as a product of family resources 84 85.
Further trials brought him to Second-Level Peak physical power. During the escape from the abyss beneath the Heart Refining Path, Mu Bai carried him while he was unconscious; Chen Jianli ultimately rescued them from the Ice-Soul Crystal Dragon 91.
After the Ice Ruins ordeal, Chen Shichong sheltered the injured Ji Ruxia and Yan Ru in a forest cave. With little soul power remaining, he used his own body heat to clean Ji Ruxia’s wounds and keep her alive. He and Ji Ruxia confessed their love and promised to marry, although he believed he first needed to free his household from Beishan control 103 104.
The Chen Household’s Restrictions
The Chen ancestor Chen Yuanpeng had pledged that only two Chen Household Xiu Zun could exist simultaneously. With Chen Jianli and Chen Jianduan already occupying those places, Chen Shichong spent years at Third-Level Peak despite possessing the ability to advance. His frustration deepened into despair, culminating in an attempted suicide that his father stopped 224.
Chen Jianli ultimately dispersed his cultivation and refined his physical power into a Blood Pill for his son. Chen Shichong’s resulting breakthrough came at the cost of his father’s health; Chen Jianli later died from bodily deterioration. Afterward, Chen Shichong became withdrawn, cultivated relentlessly, and increasingly resented the Sword Sect 245 280.
The sect also allowed the household only one Dao Zun. Chen Shichong’s conflict with that restriction culminated in a duel with Chen Jianduan. Initially refusing to retaliate, he accepted wounds as repayment to his father and uncle before finally fighting. Chen Jianduan died beneath his sword and became the sword soul of Autumn Sun. Chen Shichong buried him beneath Glacier’s snow and carved his tomb inscription into the canyon wall 369 370 450 519.
Rebellion Against the Sword Sect
Chen Shichong eventually rejected the ancestral teachings as grounds for continued submission to the Beishan Household. While Chen Qi led one hundred thousand Chen cultivators southward, he killed Beishan Lie and engaged Sect Master Beishan Fengyun 449 450.
Mu Lan Pavilion and Earthfire City each sent one hundred thousand reinforcements. Chen Shichong asked his father-in-law Ji Yang to protect Ji Ruxia and Chen Qi rather than assist him personally. The arrival of the Sword Sect’s hidden reserves—including Yuan Zun Beishan Xiong and three Dao Zun peak cultivators—overturned the allies’ advantage, and Beishan Fengyun grievously wounded him 450.
He survived and reunited with his wife and son. Later accounts credit Mu Bai’s intervention with saving his rebellion, and describe the Sword Sect as having been reclaimed with everyone’s help 451 504 515.
Blood Demon Dao and Reconciliation
After finding a section of Heavenly Demon Body, Chen Shichong devoured it in pursuit of greater strength. He traveled to the Western Plains with Qing Ping and Qing Dai, reunited with Gusu Wan’er, and became involved with Blood River Demon Valley. His growing obsession was fueled partly by feeling unable to stand as Mu Bai’s equal 503 504.
Mu Bai confronted him and began relinquishing his own perfected Heavenly Demon Body to persuade him to stop. Chen Shichong’s craving for the exposed essence blood briefly overwhelmed him, requiring Mu Bai to awaken him with mental power. Nevertheless, he immediately fought beside Mu Bai against an Evil Demon Venerable and offered to hold the enemy off alone 514 515.
Gusu Wan’er subsequently intercepted a killing attack intended for him. After her death, Chen Shichong resolved to find his own path and fight beside Mu Bai for the Origin Realm. His encounters with Jin Er and Xie Beichen deepened his Sword Dao, leading him to reject the Heavenly Demon Body and return north to bury Wan’er 516 517 518 519 523 526 527.
Revenge and the Northern Plains War
When Chen Qi and his son Chen Mu Fei were killed, Chen Shichong pursued Qian Yuhuang through the turbulent void. He fought until Qian Yuhuang’s borrowed six-layered Dharma Form reversed his strongest blood-sword attack. Mu Bai arrived to save him, and the brothers vowed revenge 574 575.
Together, they killed Qian Yuhuang and brought his severed head to the Northern Plains. Chen Shichong and Ji Ruxia mourned Fei’er, while the head was displayed beside the Chen Household graveyard as the victims were buried 578.
Chen Shichong later fought alongside Qingtian against the Evil Demon army and Immortal Slave Jin Yi. His blood swords helped wound Jin Yi, but the two allies were badly injured and called Mu Bai back to the battlefield. During subsequent fighting in the Six Heavens, he refused Qingtian’s offer of Heavenly Demon Essence Blood, remaining committed to his own strength 589 590 593 594.
Final Duel and Sacrifice
Before confronting Hai Chen, Mu Bai entrusted Chen Shichong with the Reincarnation Sword. Chen Shichong promised to recover Emperor Ye Hua’s White Dragon Water Sword and help it attain Perfection 629.
Hai Chen offered the White Dragon Water Sword as the prize for defeating one of his Golden Immortal slaves. Despite being only Dao Ling Peak, Chen Shichong accepted. He used enemy metal power as a weapon, dispersed his body into the five elements, and forced the immortal onto the defensive before being driven out of hiding and surrounded by golden swords 630 631.
At the decisive moment, he transformed the immortal’s protective golden light screen into swords that cut across its throat. The enemy’s swords simultaneously pierced his body and Divine Palace. He fulfilled his promise to recover the White Dragon Water Sword, but his sacrifice left him limp in Mu Bai’s arms. The chapter identifies his fate as becoming a sword spirit 632.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and muscular, with a body that becomes more imposing during transformation 85.
- Face: Smooth as jade, with striking brows and sharp eyes; his appearance attracts considerable attention from female cultivators 68.
- Clothing: Notably appears in white robes, compared to a jade tree 68.
- Later demeanor: Develops a melancholy expression and becomes colder following his father’s sacrifice and death 245 280.
- Demon form: Deep azure flesh interwoven with blood radiance, initially shown at dozens of zhang tall 503.
Personality
Chen Shichong is initially confident, sociable, and playful. He enjoys travel, wine, teasing friends, and entertaining the household servants with gifts and stories. His privileged upbringing gives him polished manners and broad knowledge, but does not prevent him from openly recounting his humiliating encounter with the Yellow Weasel Bride 67 72 84.
His determination extends far beyond inherited advantages. He persists through five days and nights of the Hundred Puppet Path despite wounds and near-total exhaustion, then recognizes his own shortcomings while watching Mu Bai risk his life in combat 85 86.
Talent is also a source of insecurity. Being forbidden to advance leaves him ashamed to face Mu Bai, and repeated rescues make him feel insignificant beside his brother. These feelings contribute to his dangerous pursuit of the Blood Demon Dao 224 504 514 515.
His later understanding of the sword centers on protection rather than proving superiority. He relinquishes demonic power, refuses to resume using it even when gravely injured, and ultimately stakes his life on keeping his promise to Mu Bai 526 527 593 631 632.
