Background / History

Enslavement and the Rocks Pirates

In his youth, Kaido was enslaved by the Celestial Dragons, forced to work continuously, and subjected to research into his lineage factor. Whitebeard freed him during an attack that liberated the slaves. Kaido subsequently went to sea, initially swearing to free the world’s slaves and establish freedom and equality 10.

He later served under Rocks alongside Whitebeard, Charlotte Linlin, and Golden Lion Shiki. Rocks told him about Sky Island and its Poneglyph. The Rocks Pirates disbanded after their captain’s defeat at God Valley by Roger and Garp 29.

Emperor of Wano

Kaido eventually became one of the Four Emperors, ruling from Onigashima in Wano Country. Despite his youthful opposition to slavery, he confined and oppressed Wano’s people, repeating the cruelty of the Celestial Dragons. The reason for this change is not revealed 4 10.

He repeatedly challenged the Navy and other Emperors alone. Across his career, he was captured eighteen times, subjected to a thousand brutal tortures, and sentenced to death forty times without being killed 6.

Battle with Lofan

Jack’s capture prompted Kaido to leave Onigashima alone, intending to rescue his subordinate and kill Lofan. Although he suspected the Navy was deliberately baiting him, he trusted his strength to overcome its preparations 4 6.

Kaido confronted Lofan at a Marine branch and pursued him to an isolated island. His superior combat experience initially let him anticipate Lofan’s Flash Step and land a heavy blow. However, Lofan’s concentrated Reiatsu attacks eventually forced Kaido to recognize him as a dangerous opponent and use his Human-Beast Form 9 10 11.

Their duel devastated the island. Kaido answered Lofan’s ultimate attack, Peerless, with Torch: Flaming Bagua, but suffered a wound extending from his waist to his left chest, leaving only his left shoulder holding him together. Both combatants collapsed. After healing himself enough to stand, Lofan approached Kaido and invoked Illusion rather than granting his request to be killed 12.

Perospero reported Kaido dead, but Kaido remained alive and had already begun regenerating. Lofan told the Marines that Kaido had escaped despite his injuries; the precise circumstances of his departure were not disclosed 13 14.

Loss of Wano and Retreat

Kaido’s defeat coincided with the collapse of the Beasts Pirates’ rescue operation. Queen was captured, King escaped wounded, all their ships were destroyed, and half of the Flying Six were killed or injured. Big Mom then seized Wano and its Road Poneglyph, while other forces defected from or attacked Kaido’s remaining territories 14 15 21.

While recuperating with King, Kaido remained chiefly concerned about Yamato, who had been taken to Totto Land. His injuries prevented him from personally confronting Big Mom at full strength, so King led the retrieval operation. Lofan’s Peerless was described as likely to leave Kaido with a lasting injury 21 25.

After Yamato’s rescue, Big Mom pursued the remnants to eliminate Kaido before he recovered. A Knock Up Stream caught both the Beasts Pirates and the pursuing Queen Mama Chanter; Big Mom’s ship turned back, while Kaido’s forces continued toward Sky Island 27 29.

Rebuilding on Sky Island

Kaido chose Sky Island as a new base because he already knew its location and believed Big Mom did not know it existed. He led his battered crew across the White Sea toward Angel Island, declaring it the starting point of his comeback 29.

The Beasts Pirates subsequently occupied Sky Island’s islands. Gan Fall submitted and became an administrator, while Kaido restricted access to the sky route to his own crew. Discovering Shandora’s golden buildings gave him a new source of wealth, although his plan to build an army of beasts remained on hold 35.

Kaido also ordered his men to spare the Shandia attackers after King identified their potential as recruits. Still unable to sustain his peak strength for long, he nevertheless intended to make both Big Mom and Lofan pay for his losses 35.

Appearance

Kaido has an enormous, burly physique, long black hair, a long beard, and upward-pointing horns 9 10.

Personality

Kaido is volatile, destructive, and frequently drinks. His response to Jack’s capture shifts abruptly from smashing buildings in rage to crying over his responsibility for sending Jack away, then back to threatening Lofan’s life. Despite these mood swings, he recognizes strategic traps; his willingness to enter them comes from arrogance rather than an inability to understand them 4 6.

He values worthy opponents and takes genuine pleasure in life-threatening combat. During his duel with Lofan, he allows opportunities for recovery, praises effective attacks, and refrains from exploiting an opening because he admires the young Marine. He would have tried to recruit Lofan had they not belonged to opposing sides 9 11 12.

Kaido distinguishes defeat from betrayal. He regards Lofan as a formidable rival rather than an object of personal hatred, while Big Mom’s seizure of his home provokes a far deeper resentment. Losing his territory does not break his resolve: he considers the Beasts Pirates capable of returning as long as he remains alive 21.

His treatment of Yamato combines harsh punishment with concern. He previously answered Yamato’s attacks with beatings, mockery, and confinement in a cave, yet worries about Yamato’s disappearance and later accepts the child’s changed behavior because survival matters more to him 17 21 35.

Physical Strength, Durability, and Recovery

Kaido’s strength and endurance underpin his reputation as the Strongest Creature. Lofan finds no obvious weakness in his overall combat capabilities and concludes that a prolonged battle would favor Kaido 9 11 12.
