Background / History
Rocks Pirates
Linlin served under Rocks alongside Whitebeard, Kaido, and Golden Lion Shiki. The crew disbanded after Rocks fell at God Valley, where Roger and Garp stopped him 29.
Her friendship with Kaido dated to their time aboard Rocks’s ship, and she supplied his Fish-Fish Fruit. She regarded him as a younger brother, but their longstanding bond ultimately proved less important to her than her ambition for Totto Land 7 16.
Partnership with Lofan
Hancock initially contacted Big Mom about cooperation involving a Road Poneglyph. Big Mom sent Perospero to investigate, ordering him to arrange Hancock’s marriage into the family if the offer was genuine—or kill her if it was a deception. Lofan subsequently revealed that he was the actual prospective partner 5 6.
Lofan proposed taking Wano’s Road Poneglyph while Kaido and his All-Stars were occupied elsewhere. He also promised Zou’s Road Poneglyph in exchange for Big Mom’s knowledge of the Soul-Soul Fruit and a Homie created from her own soul. Big Mom accepted, added a demand that he marry one of her daughters, and made her intervention conditional on his surviving Kaido 7.
The arrangement served a concealed purpose for Lofan: encouraging Big Mom to seize Kaido’s possessions would divide the two Emperors. Her understanding of souls was also essential to his research into Soul Reaper powers and Hollowfication 7.
Conquest of Wano
After witnessing Lofan cut Kaido in half, Perospero reported that Kaido was dead. Big Mom immediately dispatched Katakuri to claim Onigashima, Wano Country, and its Road Poneglyph. Her forces completed the takeover before many other pirates could react 13 15 16.
Katakuri also brought Yamato to Totto Land. Big Mom treated the captive as a prospective family member and intended to marry her to one of her sons, despite Yamato’s repeated attempts to attack her and escape 17 18.
When Lofan visited Whole Cake Island, Big Mom hosted a family banquet and shared her experiences with the Soul-Soul Fruit. His demonstrated strength changed her treatment of him: the marriage demand became a suggestion rather than a firm condition. She withheld the Homies until he delivered Zou’s Road Poneglyph 17 18.
Break with Kaido
The takeover uprooted the Beasts Pirates’ base and encouraged their subordinate forces to defect or surrender. Kaido resented Big Mom’s betrayal more deeply than his defeat by Lofan 21.
After learning that Kaido might still be alive, Big Mom personally pursued his weakened forces to eliminate the threat before he recovered. The Queen Mama Chanter encountered a Knock Up Stream and turned back, while the Beasts Pirates escaped toward Sky Island 27 35.
Yamato’s rescue further confirmed that the Beasts Pirates remained active. Big Mom was furious at losing the opportunity to finish Kaido, while Kaido declared that their feud would end only with one side’s destruction 29 35.
Expansion and the Race for Laugh Tale
Big Mom’s forces expanded aggressively after Kaido’s downfall. During the subsequent wave of pirate challenges against the remaining Emperors, her crew emerged as the greatest territorial beneficiary, but its commanders and soldiers were left wounded and exhausted 36 54.
She refused Katakuri’s request for time to regroup, crushed him with her pressure, and ordered him to demand Zou’s Road Poneglyph from Lofan in exchange for Homies. Pudding later approached Lofan on her behalf to ask about the stone 54 57.
Unknown to her children and Kaido, Big Mom had discovered the fourth Road Poneglyph’s location in her youth. She had previously judged the losses required to obtain it unjustifiable. With two Road Poneglyphs already secured and a third promised, acquiring the last one now appeared worthwhile 61.
Meanwhile, Lofan decided to target her resources rather than fulfill the partnership straightforwardly. He visited Wano, obtained information from Sukiyaki, and ordered Issho to copy Zou’s Road Poneglyph and throw the stone into the sea. Big Mom remained unaware of these plans and continued awaiting her promised delivery 55 58 60 61.
Personality
Big Mom’s central ambition is Totto Land, expressed through her desire to make everyone part of her family. Lofan persuades her by presenting the One Piece and the title of Pirate King as means of securing that dream. In practice, she treats her children as instruments of her ambition and regards their resistance as disobedience 7 54.
She can be calculating when negotiating. Although tempted by Wano’s Road Poneglyph, she waits for proof that Lofan can survive Kaido before committing. After he establishes himself as an equal in strength, she relaxes her added marriage condition but retains the Homies as leverage 7 18.
Her growing advantage makes her increasingly greedy and impatient. She dismisses the exhaustion of her own forces and injures Katakuri when he asks for a pause. Her urgency also has a practical basis that she keeps secret: she already knows where the final Road Poneglyph can be found 54 61.
Her moods are reflected by the Homies around her. During celebrations, furniture, flowers, and trees sing; during her anger over Kaido’s survival, Zeus crackles with lightning and Prometheus’s flames boil 13 35.
