Power Progression
Lofan’s Aizen Template advances through training, combat, and imitation of Aizen’s appearance and thinking. The benefits of imitation diminish as his completion rate rises 1 50.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aizen Template: 31% | 2 | Already proficient in all three types of Haki. Tests his abilities against Jack, but acknowledges that he cannot yet overwhelm him outright. The Hōgyoku remains locked. |
| Aizen Template: 41% | 10 | Recorded during the Kaido battle. Unleashes Five Dragon Destruction and concentrates his Reiatsu into Cut in Two, a slash Kaido recognizes as potentially lethal. The Hōgyoku remains locked. |
| Conqueror’s Haki coating demonstrated | 12 | Combines Conqueror’s coating, Armament Haki, and Reiatsu to exchange direct blows with Kaido. Debuts Peerless, winning their final clash at enormous physical cost. |
| Aizen Template: 51% | 19 | The completion rate reached after fighting Kaido. Passing 50% does not unlock the Hōgyoku. |
| Aizen Template: 53% | 27 | Recorded during his return to the Grand Line. Hopes that reaching 60% will unlock the Hōgyoku. |
| Aizen Template: 60% | 36 | Unlocks a new application of Illusion that defines a selected target’s presented identity and information. Uses it to create “Robin No. 2.” |
| Aizen Template: 62% | 50 | Progress has slowed considerably since the Kaido battle. The Hōgyoku is still locked, prompting him to prioritize further advancement. |
Background / History
Lofan comes from another world and retains memories of both its institutions and the original course of events in the pirate world. Tsuru discovered him on a deserted island in the Calm Belt in Sea Circle Calendar year 1512, after he had spent more than half a month stranded there. She recommended him for Marine training at Marineford 1 28 33.
At the elite training camp, Lofan inherited Aizen’s exceptional talent and learning ability. Zephyr taught him Haki, which he grasped after a single demonstration, and judged that he could lead the Marines into an era of dominance. Unable to provide the level of instruction Lofan needed, Zephyr recommended him to Kong, who became his mentor 1 3 16.
His three years of preparation centered on building an immensely powerful body, with Haki as supplementary training. In 1515, he declined a warship escort to his appointment and set out alone in a wooden boat, intending to begin his own plans before formally taking up his post 1 5 16.
Appearance
Lofan has a refined, scholarly bearing, black hair, and a habitual gentle smile that makes him appear mild and approachable 1 3.
- Black, square-framed glasses: Part of the appearance he models on Aizen 1.
- White clothing and Justice Coat: Wears white at sea and a Marine Justice Coat on duty 2 15.
- White-sheathed sword: Carries his Zanpakuto at his waist 1.
- Severe battle injuries: His final clash with Kaido chars and twists his upper right torso. After Ain’s temporary restoration is reversed, he undergoes conventional treatment 12 14.
Personality
Lofan’s courteous smile conceals a calculating approach to power. He combines negotiation, intimidation, hypnosis, and contingency plans rather than relying on force alone. With Doflamingo, he offers mutually useful cooperation; with Morgans, he supplements persuasion with hypnosis to prevent disclosure 2 23.
His central ambition is freedom unrestricted by others. Initially, he rejects both the search for ONE PIECE and the idea of making world reform his dream, instead seeking to reach the pinnacle of strength and experience the world’s greatest figures. Combat reveals another side of him: against Kaido, he abandons his cautious plan for the exhilaration of a genuine life-and-death struggle 1 12 52.
Despite borrowing Aizen’s methods, Lofan remains attached to his benefactors and subordinates. He feels indebted to Tsuru and Zephyr, reacts angrily to Zephyr’s mutilation, and wants Ain to understand him rather than merely admire or obey him 3 8.
His stated justice is people-centered: strength should uphold benevolence, restraint, and peaceful lives rather than validate a Marine’s personal righteousness. He also treats ideological education and absolute loyalty as foundations of the Search Bureau 40 41.
Abilities & Skills
Aizen Template
The template grants Lofan Aizen’s power, talent, and learning ability, while also influencing his outlook 1 53.
- Rapid learning: Learns Haki after watching a single demonstration 3.
- Multiple advancement methods: Improves through combat, training, and imitation of Aizen’s dress and thinking 1.
- Identity risk: His prolonged imitation produces an Aizen-like self within his soul. He fears it may eventually become strong enough to seize control 53.
- Locked potential: The Hōgyoku remains unavailable at 62% completion 50.
Illusion — Complete Hypnosis
Lofan’s Zanpakuto, Illusion, controls all five senses, including the soul’s perception, in those who see its released blade. It is already released from the beginning; his spoken commands deliberately mislead others about how activation works 11.
- Persistent susceptibility: Once someone falls under Illusion, Lofan states that they cannot escape its influence 5.
- Sensory substitution: Makes senior Marine officers mistake one another for him without detecting the manipulation 5.
- Concealment: Disguises his appearance during investigations and hides Robin’s identity at Marine Headquarters 36 43.
- Behavioral manipulation: Ensures that any account Morgans writes of their secret meeting becomes a scandal about Morgans himself 23.
- Identity construction: At 60% template completion, gives a death-row prisoner Robin’s memories and apparent identity, creating a decoy who believes herself to be Robin 36.
- Known counters: Avoid seeing the blade, or touch it before Complete Hypnosis activates. Lofan considers possible interactions with Future Sight and Devil Fruits but has not identified a working counter from them 11.
Reiatsu and Soul Reaper Techniques
Lofan inherits immense spiritual pressure, though he has not fully developed it. His Reiatsu supports attacks, suppression, recovery, and endurance 10.
- Spiritual suppression: Forces Doflamingo to the floor and briefly restricts Kaido’s movement; Kaido’s powerful soul resists complete suppression 2 9.
- Overwhelming weaker opponents: Destroys Yamato’s sword energy with Reiatsu and overwhelms Pudding when she approaches him 18 57.
- Recovery: Provides considerable endurance, but does not let him outlast Kaido in a prolonged contest 10 12.
- Air movement and Flash Step: Steps through the air and moves at high speed. Kaido nevertheless anticipates his Flash Step during their first exchanges 2 9.
| Technique | Application | Demonstrated limits |
|---|---|---|
| Hadō #63: Thunder Roar Cannon | Repeatedly disrupts Kaido’s attacks and wears down his stamina 10. | Used as harassment rather than a decisive finishing attack 10. |
| Hadō #90: Black Coffin | Encloses a target, cuts off perception, and attacks with Shadow Blades; used against Jack and Kaido 2 11. | Kaido suffers no meaningful damage and breaks it by expanding into dragon form 11. |
| Hadō #99: Five Dragon Destruction | Creates an opening for a concentrated sword strike 10. | Kaido takes the attack directly, sustaining burns that quickly heal 10. |
| Bakudō #26: Kyokkō | Conceals Lofan from sight beneath a transparent covering of Reiatsu 11. | Used to prepare an ambush after Black Coffin 11. |
| Bakudō #83: Reverse | Begins repairing his nearly fatal injuries after the final clash with Kaido 12. | With his Reiatsu depleted, it heals only surface injuries 12. |
Haki and Physical Combat
Lofan is proficient in Observation, Armament, and Conqueror’s Haki 2.
- Observation Haki: Locates Doflamingo inside his palace 1.
- Armament Haki: Coats his Zanpakuto and arms during combat with Kaido 9 12.
- Conqueror’s Haki: Knocks out Jack’s accompanying pirates and later coats his blade during direct clashes with Kaido 2 12.
- Physical strength: Stops Jack’s punch with one hand and defeats Skeleton Taya while testing his raw physical power 2 44.
- Technical limitations: Knows none of the Six Powers. His swordsmanship chiefly relies on force delivered through Haki and Reiatsu, while his combat techniques are tailored to his own body 16.
Signature Sword Attacks
- Cut in Two: Concentrates all his Reiatsu into a single slash. Kaido evades its first use by letting Five Dragon Destruction carry him away; a later strike wounds him, but his resistance prevents the intended bisection. Full commitment leaves Lofan briefly exposed 10 11.
- Peerless: Gathers his Haki and Reiatsu into an ultimate strike. Defeats Kaido’s Torch: Flaming Bagua, but carries a fifteen-minute loss-of-strength drawback and leaves Lofan critically injured and almost spiritually exhausted 12.
Investigation and Institutional Reform
Lofan uses undercover work, recorded testimony, financial control, and ideological training to build the Search Bureau into an effective organization 30 41 43 44.
- Establishes clearer duties and procedures, with strict punishment for corrupt Marines 30.
- Records pirate confessions with a Den Den Mushi and gathers evidence across multiple islands before dismantling Branch 199 43 44.
- Directs confiscated illicit funds toward the Investigation Bureau under Sengoku’s authorization 44.
- Promotes upgraded warships, heavy guns, and longer-range naval combat rather than dependence on boarding actions 45.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Illusion: His soul-modeled Zanpakuto and principal weapon, carried in a white sheath 1 10.
- Seastone warship: Receives his own ship after becoming an Admiral candidate 5.
- Den Den Mushi: Used for command communications, intelligence contacts, and recording testimony 3 39 43.
- Zou Vivre Card: Gives it to Issho for the mission to locate and copy Zou’s Poneglyph 60.
Relationships
- Tsuru — Rescuer and benefactor. Her recommendation brings him into Marine training, and he remembers her help with affection 1 3.
- Zephyr — First Marine instructor and a major influence on his justice. Lofan vows to punish Edward Weevil for injuring him and later includes Zephyr in the Search Bureau 3 36 40.
- Kong — Mentor who emphasizes physical foundations over additional techniques. Helps secure Lofan’s Admiral position 1 15 16.
- Sengoku — Superior, political sponsor, and agreed check on his authority. Approves his operations and places the Search Bureau under his supervision 3 5 30.
- Ain — Junior under Zephyr, adjutant, and trusted administrator. Her Devil Fruit restores him after the Kaido battle; he later places her among his prospective Espada candidates 8 13 27 55.
- Binz — Fellow student of Zephyr who serves aboard his warship and later works within the Search Bureau 3 36.
- Nico Robin — Recruited as “Mary,” deputy director of the Investigation Department. Calls him back during his soul crisis; he asks her to do so again if he loses himself 33 36 53.
- Doflamingo — Business partner supplying underworld access and support for soul-related Devil Fruit research. Lofan tolerates his expansion while pursuing his own institutional goals 2 19 38.
- Morgans — Intelligence contact tasked with locating Devil Fruits, people, and Kaido. Lofan uses hypnosis as insurance against exposure 22 23.
- Boa Hancock — Openly infatuated with him and willing to help arrange his dealings with Big Mom 4 5.
- Issho — Recruits him to reform the Marines from within. Considers him an Espada candidate and later intends to place him temporarily in command of the Secret Unit 46 48 53.
- Kaido — Opponent who exposes his early lack of practical experience, then comes to appreciate him as a worthy rival. Lofan defeats him but deliberately leaves him alive 9 11 13.
- Big Mom — Transactional partner who shares knowledge of the Soul-Soul Fruit. Lofan later decides to target the resources and Poneglyphs she possesses 18 55.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Jack’s Capture and Admiral Candidacy
- Secures Doflamingo’s agreement to acquire soul-related Devil Fruits and have Caesar investigate artificial versions 2.
- Encounters Jack near Dressrosa, defeats him, and brings him alive to Marineford as a “gift” 2 3.
- Becomes the youngest Admiral candidate in Marine history. The Marines publicize his route into the New World to provoke Kaido into attacking 3 5.
Defeat of Kaido and Fourth Admiral Appointment
- Draws Kaido away from the Marine branch to an isolated island without nearby civilians 8 9.
- Initially struggles against Kaido’s strength and experience, then combines Haki and Reiatsu for direct combat rather than relying on hypnosis 9 12.
- Wins through Peerless, survives with healing Kidō and Ain’s assistance, and leaves Kaido alive 12 13.
- Is appointed the fourth Marine Admiral, stationed at Marineford. Recognizing that the title does not automatically grant an established power base, he plans to build influence through further achievements 15.
Soul Research and Intelligence Network
- Consults Big Mom about the Soul-Soul Fruit and investigates Hollowfication with Doflamingo and Caesar 18 19.
- Plans either to Hollowfy suitable humans or cultivate souls into Menos Grande and eventually recreate the Espada. Both routes remain dependent on solving the Reiatsu problem and obtaining the Hōgyoku 19.
- Recruits Morgans’s intelligence services after recognizing that inadequate information leaves his plans vulnerable to unexpected events 14 22 23.
- Caesar later reports that Lofan’s lineage factor offers nothing useful for producing an artificial soul-type Devil Fruit; research on three acquired fruits continues 55.
Robin and the Search Bureau
- Accepts leadership of the Search Bureau while remaining an Admiral, establishing its headquarters on Punk Hazard under Sengoku’s oversight 30.
- Recruits Robin after confronting Crocodile. Leaves Crocodile alive partly to test whether destiny will preserve his eventual encounter with Luffy 33.
- Has Robin read Alabasta’s Poneglyph, then registers her under a concealed identity and creates a hypnotic decoy as a safeguard 36.
- Trains the bureau’s remaining personnel and personally teaches his conception of justice 38 40 41.
Branch 199 and the Five Elders
- Exposes Marine protection of pirate smuggling, defeats Taya, and gathers testimony against Rear Admiral Morris 43 44.
- Dismantles Branch 199 and anticipates retaliation from its powerful backers 44.
- Is summoned to Mary Geoise over accusations of embezzlement, protection payments, and building a private army. Admits every charge—including alleged rebellion—and challenges the Elders over powerful figures who overturn institutional rules 51.
- Returns dissatisfied despite the resolution, viewing the compulsory explanation as a humiliation that reinforces his pursuit of unrestricted freedom 52.
Crisis of Identity
- Realizes during a conversation with Robin that Aizen’s perspective has become inseparable from his own behavior 53.
- Nearly leaves the living world while sinking into the world of the soul. Encounters an indifferent version of himself and returns after hearing Robin call his name 53.
- Recognizes the growing conflict between his own identity and the Aizen-like self created through his pursuit of power 53.
Poneglyphs and Pluton
- Decides that Big Mom’s Poneglyphs and resources could help him challenge Imu or use Laugh Tale as leverage over world events 55.
- Questions Sukiyaki in Wano and concludes that he can locate Pluton. After ruling out Onigashima, turns his attention to Wano’s volcano 60.
- Orders Issho to copy Zou’s Poneglyph and throw the original into the sea, intending to prevent anyone from finding Laugh Tale 60.
