Background / History
Kong brought Garp into the Marines. During his early career, Garp served alongside Sengoku and Tsuru, and all three eventually became vice admirals. Garp later participated in the God Valley Incident, where he fought Rocks. Sengoku recalls disagreements between them after Rocks was dealt with, but their cause is not explained 67 90 129.
Garp became renowned for pursuing Pirate King Roger around the world. Kuzan also invokes Garp’s role in quelling God Valley and capturing Roger when defending his loyalty before the Marines. Despite his reputation, Garp refused promotion to admiral and refused the World Government’s summons 21 30 129.
His family repeatedly becomes a source of tension within Marine Headquarters. Dragon leaves the Marines and establishes the Revolutionary Army, while Ace rejects a Shichibukai invitation and becomes Whitebeard’s Second Division Commander. Sengoku bitterly complains about Ace’s decision, and Sakazuki attempts to hold Garp responsible for Dragon’s rebellion 9 24 30.
Personality
Garp is confident in his strength and fiercely hostile toward pirates who endanger others. He condemns Roy for releasing Level 6 prisoners and killing Marines and jailers, calling him a born demon and a calamity. His confidence extends to initially attacking Roy without Armament Haki, relying on physical strength alone 30 31.
He can nevertheless acknowledge an enemy’s ability. Before their confrontation, he recognizes both Roy’s formidable strength and his dangerous intelligence, regretting that someone so capable became a pirate 21 29.
His attachment to his student, comrades, and family becomes decisive after his defeat. He despairs when Kuzan takes a lethal attack for him and vows revenge against Roy. Although unwilling to become a hostage, he stops resisting when Roy threatens to torture the surviving Marines if he fights back or kills himself 39.
Abilities & Skills
Armament Haki
Garp possesses top-level Armament Haki, strong enough to resist attacks that would rapidly kill weaker combatants 37 38.
- Offensive projection: His strikes inflict both internal and external damage. He projects Haki outward to shatter Roy’s slash before it can cut him in half 37.
- Full-body defense: Coats his body to deflect portions of Malevolent Shrine’s relentless slashes 38.
- Limits: The domain’s sustained attacks still penetrate his defenses. The Haki protecting his left arm eventually fails, resulting in its loss 38.
Conqueror’s Haki and Coating
Garp coats his attacks in Conqueror’s Haki, producing black-and-red lightning and allowing clashes without direct physical contact 35 37.
- Overpowers Bullet’s strongest armored attack during their Impel Down duel 35.
- Meets Roy’s Black Flash head-on, but discovers that it weakens his stamina and Haki before ultimately overwhelming his coating 37.
Observation Haki
Garp uses Observation Haki to sense danger and anticipate attacks 31 38.
- Detects and dodges Malevolent Shrine’s opening slash 38.
- Cannot evade the entire storm of attacks once the domain begins striking from every direction 38.
- Fails to avoid Bullet’s surprise attack despite sensing the danger; the passage notes that comparable fighters can briefly suppress an opponent’s Observation Haki 31.
Unarmed Combat and Six Powers
Garp is an exceptional hand-to-hand fighter and, alongside Zephyr, is described as having taken the Six Powers to their pinnacle 25.
- Physical strength: Nearly matches Roy in an initial exchange fought without Haki, driving him back seven steps while retreating six himself 31.
- Fist Bone Impact: A powerful punch used with Conqueror’s Coating to defeat Bullet’s final attack at Impel Down 35.
- Galaxy Impact: Counters incoming domain slashes with a Haki-cloaked punch, briefly clearing a route toward safety 38.
- Soru: Uses high-speed movement to rush toward Malevolent Shrine’s boundary 38.
- Anti-shikigami combat: Destroys Divine Dogs: Totality and Piercing Ox during his prolonged battle with Roy, leaving both sealed afterward 37 57.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Mechanical left arm — Made and modified by Vegapunk after Roy severs Garp’s original arm. During the Sabaody battle, Garp coats the steel prosthesis in Haki and fights as naturally as though it were his original limb 64 115.
Relationships
- Dragon — Son and founder of the Revolutionary Army. Their relationship is used by both Sakazuki and Roy to question Garp’s loyalty 24 30.
- Luffy — Grandson. After learning that Garp, Shanks, and Ace have been injured, Luffy wants to leave Foosha Village to avenge them, but is persuaded to train first 107.
- Ace — Grandson. His decision to join Whitebeard’s crew frustrates Sengoku; Garp thinks of him when facing death inside Roy’s domain 9 39.
- Kuzan — Student. Publicly guarantees Garp’s innocence regarding Dragon’s rebellion and later takes Roy’s finishing slash to save him 30 39.
- Sengoku — Longtime friend and comrade. Defends Garp against Sakazuki’s accusations and orders his rescue and urgent medical treatment after Impel Down 24 42.
- Tsuru — Longtime friend and comrade. Rejects attempts to blame Garp for Dragon’s actions and later fears that his disappearance will leave the Marines unable to withstand further losses 24 124.
- Bogard — Adjutant. Fights during the prison breakout and is captured and rescued alongside Garp 30 31 42.
- Roy — Enemy responsible for his defeat, lost arm, and captivity. Their conflict includes a bitter dispute over Marine justice and Garp’s family ties 30 36 39.
- Bullet — Longstanding enemy whose earlier capture involved Garp. Loses their Impel Down duel, then fights him again at Sabaody 31 35 113.
- Sakazuki — Hostile colleague. Attempts to make Dragon’s rebellion grounds for action against Garp, provoking Sengoku and Tsuru’s intervention 24.
- Rayleigh — Secretly meets Garp before the major Sabaody battle; their discussion is not revealed 107.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Impel Down Investigation
- Accompanies Sengoku and Tsuru to inspect Roy’s destruction on Level 1. He identifies the nearly thousand-meter slash as comparable to an attack from a top Great Swordsman 21.
- Remains with Kuzan to search for Roy after Sengoku and Tsuru leave to address Revolutionary Army activity 22.
- Helps uncover prisoner testimony suggesting that fugitives have been disappearing into an unknown space inside the prison 24.
- Joins Kuzan and Magellan in assembling approximately four thousand Marines and jailers on Level 2 29.
Prison Battle and Defeat
- Calls Roy evil for freeing dangerous prisoners. Roy retaliates by revealing Dragon’s identity, briefly destabilizing Marine morale until Kuzan intervenes 30.
- Is struck from behind by Bullet when Roy’s forces spring their encirclement. He subsequently defeats Bullet despite suffering wounds himself 31 35.
- Fights Roy and two shikigami for two hours. Although he destroys the shikigami, Roy inflicts a deep abdominal wound and overwhelms him with Black Flash 36 37.
- Survives Malevolent Shrine long enough to approach its boundary, but loses his left arm. Kuzan saves him from Enhanced Slash: Hachi and is critically wounded in his place 38 39.
- Submits to captivity after Roy kills five surviving Marines and threatens the rest. Roy uses the captives to obstruct the approaching Marine reinforcements 39 40.

- Is subsequently reported to be receiving treatment on Bullet Island alongside Kuzan 53.
- Awakens and receives a mechanical arm. Sengoku’s attempt to share the recovery news with Captain T-Bone inadvertently informs Roy, who answers the dead captain’s Den Den Mushi 64.
Sabaody Battle and Disappearance
- Secretly meets Rayleigh before joining the Marine operation at Sabaody 107.
- Leads the Area 38 force alongside Kizaru and fights Bullet through an extended battle. His prosthesis functions effectively, but his age and previous injuries gradually put him at a disadvantage 113 115.
- Is rendered unconscious. Kuma sends him away before Bullet can take him hostage 122.
- Is thereafter considered missing. His disappearance remains unresolved when Kuzan finally awakens nearly half a year after the Impel Down incident 124 143 146.
