Background / History
Second Shinobi World War and the Rain Disciples
Jiraiya studied under Hiruzen Sarutobi alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. During the Second Shinobi World War, the three fought Hanzō of the Salamander in the Land of Rain. Although they remained at a disadvantage, their performance earned Hanzō’s recognition and made the Sannin name famous throughout the shinobi world 7 9 10.
In Konoha Year 37, Jiraiya met Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan in the Land of Rain. He taught them ninjutsu and taijutsu, incorporating frog games into their training. Nagato later credited Jiraiya with changing his hostile view of Konoha ninja 9 77.
After returning to Konoha, Jiraiya told Hiruzen that he believed he had found the Child of Prophecy foretold by Mount Myōboku’s sage. He cited the candidate’s exceptional chakra, aptitude for ninjutsu, and bonds with companions. The abandoned home of his Rain disciples later concerned him partly because his candidate was among them 6 9.
Taking Liumu as a Disciple
Hiruzen arranged for Jiraiya to assess five-year-old Liumu, hoping that teaching the boy would keep Jiraiya attached to the village. Jiraiya initially had no intention of accepting another disciple, but discovered that Liumu shared his desire to travel 7.
At the Valley of the End, Jiraiya offered to accept Liumu if he could shatter a stone within three days. Liumu instead demolished Madara Uchiha’s enormous statue with consecutive punches. Astonished by his strength, Jiraiya accepted him, and the pair slipped out of Konoha at midnight to avoid the consequences of the destruction 7.
Their first journey took them to the Land of Rain. At the wooden house once occupied by Jiraiya’s earlier students, Jiraiya fastened a recovered Konoha forehead protector around Liumu’s arm, formally recognizing him as a ninja. He paired a stern warning against harming Konoha with an appeal to preserve his human conscience 8 9.
Jiraiya subsequently received intelligence confirming that his Rain disciples were pursuing their own efforts to change their homeland. He expressed pride in their independence rather than forcing a reunion 10.
Root Confrontation and Early Travels
When Root accused Liumu of betraying Konoha, Jiraiya refused to surrender him. He suspected that Danzo was using the accusation to attack Hiruzen’s faction through its students. During the confrontation, Jiraiya attempted to shield Liumu with a Water Formation Wall, only to watch his disciple absorb both the hostile ninjutsu and the protective barrier 14.
Liumu’s unexplained abilities made Jiraiya question whether he had correctly identified the Child of Hope. After leaving, the pair spent part of their travels in the relatively isolated Land of Wind, where Danzo would have difficulty sending pursuers. Over a year together, their initially formal relationship developed into easy teasing and companionship 14 15.
After returning to Konoha, Jiraiya departed for demanding training at Mount Myōboku. Unable to attend Liumu’s Chunin Exams, he sent encouragement through Toad Wu 16 22.
The Hatake Dispute
Jiraiya intercepted an angry Liumu outside the Hokage Office during the controversy surrounding Hatake Sakumo and the Hatake Clan. Although he acknowledged the cruelty of the rule involved, he urged Liumu to consider what confronting the leadership would accomplish and promised that mistakes would be corrected 54.
While Liumu waited for a decision, Jiraiya taught him the Rasengan and proposed that they resume traveling afterward. Liumu then drew him into the blame surrounding his plan to secretly study the Scroll of Seals, much to Jiraiya’s alarm 54 57.
Danzo later criticized Jiraiya for remaining a Konoha ninja without accepting formal responsibilities. Hiruzen proposed an elite Jōnin post, but Jiraiya refused, citing his planned travels with Liumu. He nevertheless passed along village requests and persuaded Liumu to assess a squad on Yūhi Shinku’s behalf 59 60.
Return to the Land of Rain
Jiraiya traveled with Liumu and Han to visit Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan at Akatsuki’s headquarters. During their stay, he was enlisted to give extended lessons to children at the Land of Rain’s Ninja Academy 74 75.
He also blocked a proposed promotion that would have made Liumu a Jōnin at seven. Despite the boy’s strength and recommendations from influential shinobi, Jiraiya believed he needed more experience, composure, and time to mature. Liumu welcomed the decision because he did not want the accompanying duties 75.
The three continued traveling for another three years. Jiraiya repeatedly evaded Hiruzen’s requests to return, then eventually sent Liumu and Han ahead to Konoha while he revisited Mount Myōboku to address his stalled progress in gathering sage energy 79 80.
Later Activities
Jiraiya investigated the Land of Crafts and asked Liumu to examine a discovery there. He later reported to Minato about ninja tools made from a fallen meteor and supplied a scroll recording their manufacturing methods. Recognizing that Liumu now had responsibilities overseeing Root and the ANBU, he left without inviting his former traveling companion along 107 126 127.
After Muhan’s birth, Jiraiya and Tsunade helped Liumu and Han care for her. When Jiraiya planned another investigation of the Land of Rain, Liumu insisted on going in his place and explicitly warned him not to travel there himself 141.
Jiraiya later taught Naruto Senjutsu, helping him develop strong chakra control. Near the end of the story, Liumu reflected that his intervention had saved his teacher’s life 176 177.
Appearance
Jiraiya is described as rugged-looking, with a habitual languid or carefree expression that disappears when he becomes serious 9.
- “Oil” forehead protector: Bears Mount Myōboku’s symbol rather than Konoha’s emblem 8.
- Wooden sandals/clogs: Worn during his outings and training demonstrations 7 54.
- Straw rain cape: Used during his stay in the Land of Rain 10.
- Manipulable hair: Can lengthen and rise into needle-like strands when he prepares to fight 14.
Personality
Jiraiya values freedom and dislikes village politics. He prefers wandering to holding an official post, rejecting Hiruzen’s attempt to assign him elite Jōnin responsibilities. Nevertheless, Fugaku recognizes that beneath this independence lies a willingness to sacrifice himself for Konoha 59 89.
His humor and lechery frequently shape his everyday behavior. He describes visiting women and hot springs as gathering “inspiration” for his writing, and his selection of women for Liumu’s birthday party earns Tsunade’s anger. His jealousy also surfaces when Tsunade seeks to take Liumu as her own student 7 16 63 64.
As a teacher, Jiraiya is protective without demanding complete access to his students’ lives. He refuses to let Root slander Liumu, leaves the boy’s mysterious abilities unexplained when he chooses not to disclose them, and takes pride in his Rain disciples’ independent ambitions 10 14.
He distinguishes overwhelming strength from maturity. His opposition to Liumu’s early Jōnin promotion comes from concern that rapid advancement could encourage arrogance before experience has tempered his abilities 75.

“Liumu, remember this. As a ninja, you may have to carry out many missions you don't want to do. Even so, as your teacher, I hope you never forget one thing: before you're a ninja, you're a person. And as a person, you must have the most basic human conscience.” 9
“Since it's a mistake, it will be corrected promptly. What can't be corrected will be removed.” 54
