Background / History

Origins and Kirigakure’s Experiments

Han came from a declining Ice City on an isolated northern island in the Land of Water. When Juzo Biwa discovered it during a secret mission, fewer than twenty-odd inhabitants remained. Han was its youngest child, and her parents were already dead. Her clanspeople refused to abandon their homeland but entrusted her to Juzo to preserve their bloodline 50.

Han was not yet four when Juzo brought her to Kirigakure. Her Ice Release awakened around the beginning of the village’s kekkei genkai program, and she became one of its test subjects. Her childhood involved imprisonment, harsh training, and lethal violence; she grew up without knowing her origins 46 50 131.

Her parents had left her a small stone box. Juzo concealed it beneath an ancient tree ten li east of Kirigakure, intending to sever her attachment to her past and help her identify with the village 50.

Chunin Exams

Representing Kirigakure, Han defeated Lantu by freezing both him and his Stone Giant. Against Yugito Nii, she combined concealing mist, an enormous ice dragon, defensive walls, spinning snowflakes, and ground-covering ice spikes 33 38 39.

Kakashi surrendered before fighting her, placing Han in the final against Liumu. She refused Liumu’s request to concede. Before she could complete her opening technique, he seized her wrists, drained her chakra, and struck her. Rather than throw her out of the arena, he carried her over its boundary with him, deliberately producing a draw 40.

Leaving Kirigakure

Despite the official draw, Kirigakure treated Han’s performance as a failure. A woman overseeing her ordered her to test another batch of children, struck her for asking about her origins, and withheld a promised explanation. Han understood that the village now considered her a defective product; the proposed test was intended to eliminate her 46.

Liumu witnessed the abuse and followed Han to her sparsely furnished home. After she detected him and attacked, he brought her into the Time House. He offered her the choice of returning to Kirigakure or leaving under his protection. Han eventually chose to accompany him, asking that he first uncover her origins 46 47 48.

Information from Han led Liumu to the Seven Ninja Swordsmen and ultimately to Juzo. Through him, Liumu learned about the Ice City and the hidden stone box. After the investigation, Han left the Land of Water with Liumu’s group, remaining inside the Time House during the journey 48 49 50.

A New Life in Konoha

Liumu brought Han into Konoha and gave her a home with him. Initially frightened by the unfamiliar surroundings and lacking friends or family there, she relied heavily on his reassurance. She began cleaning their home, sharing meals with him, and gradually experiencing the familial warmth absent from her childhood 51 58.

She later traveled with Liumu and Jiraiya, visiting the Land of Rain and meeting Konan, Yahiko, and Nagato. Over time she became more outgoing, although she remained reserved when expressing serious feelings 66 74 79 91.

Liumu deliberately kept Han away from shinobi political struggles. She eventually chose to work at the Ninja Academy, where she became a homeroom teacher responsible for basic theoretical instruction 105 126 130.

Nine-Tails Attack

During the attack at Konoha Hospital, the masked assailant wounded Han’s shoulder with a black blade. She was pale from blood loss and appeared to have just escaped a genjutsu, but still rescued Kushina and carried the newborn Naruto away from danger 123.

When the Nine-Tails tried to strike them, Minato transported Han, Kushina, and Naruto to a safe house. Han then agreed to remain with mother and child while he returned to defend the village 123.

Marriage and Motherhood

After Minato urged Liumu to consider marriage, Liumu took Han on a journey to the Land of Water. Han declined to enter Kirigakure, still unable to face its memories, but accompanied him to the ice fields near her ancestral home. There, Liumu proposed with a black meteorite ring. Han accepted, responding that she liked twins and thought Naruto seemed lonely without siblings 130 131.

The couple chose a wedding journey rather than immediately returning for a ceremony. Three years later, they returned to Konoha with Han pregnant. Their marriage ultimately took place without a village ceremony 133 146.

Shortly before delivery, white mist and ice spread from Han despite her insistence that she was not channeling chakra. The medical staff could not explain it; Tsunade suspected a connection to her constitution. After the birth, Han and Liumu discussed their daughter’s inheritance of both her Ice Release and his flames 140 141.

Their daughter Muhan later entered the Ninja Academy. Han was considered particularly well suited to guide her Ice Release development. By the final documented chapter, Han and Liumu also had a newborn second daughter 143 144 177.

Planned Return to Ice Island

When Liumu decided to leave Konoha, Han first asked about their children and destination. After he proposed Ice Island, her homeland, she agreed without demanding an explanation. She acknowledged that his extraordinary abilities sometimes made him seem as though he belonged to another world, but remained willing to accompany him. They planned to leave the next day, allowing the older Muhan to decide for herself 177.

Appearance

  • Hair: Long, white hair, which she gathers to one side when lying down 33 51.
  • Eyes: Pale-blue irises, described as darkening after childbirth 141.
  • Complexion and build: Fair-skinned and slender; as an adult, described as tall and graceful 33 57 130.
  • Clothing: Frequently wears white, including a white skirt during the Chunin Exams and a white fur cloak during her travels 39 51 132.
  • Bearing: Initially projects a cold, aloof presence; her adult demeanor is described as gentle and dignified 33 48 130.

Personality

Han’s early coldness conceals fear, loneliness, and a desperate wish to understand her past. She is wary of Liumu’s initial kindness and terrified of the village authorities, yet refuses to surrender during their exam match unless he defeats her 40 46 47.

Safety allows a more affectionate and playful side to emerge. She becomes increasingly outgoing, teases Liumu during a snowball fight, and reconnects him with old classmates for his birthday. Her sheltered upbringing also leaves her unfamiliar with ordinary celebrations and some social conventions 63 64 74 78 79.

Han loves children and is patient with them, qualities that support her decision to teach. She often expresses care through practical actions—housework, meals, protecting Kushina and Naruto, and noticing changes in Liumu’s mood—rather than elaborate declarations 80 91 123 126 177.

Ice Release

Han’s kekkei genkai supports large-scale freezing, precise ice shaping, and strong defensive techniques. Some of her ice ninjutsu can activate without hand seals, though other attacks are shown using them 33 38 40.

  • Health: Ice Release does not make her immune to ordinary illness; she develops a fever after moving to Konoha 57.
  • Inherited ability: Muhan’s apparent ability to freeze space and time is discussed as an inheritance from Han’s Ice Release, not demonstrated as Han’s own technique 141.
