Appearance
- Hair: Silver-gray, repeatedly making him recognizable from a distance 48 49 54.
- Eyes: His left eye appears pale gray in the evening light 48.
- Build: Thin shoulders; his fitted dark gray coat makes him appear straighter and taller 48 69.
- Expression and bearing: Initially cold-faced and nearly motionless, with a flat, uninflected voice. His expressions become gentler and his smiles more genuine after leaving Root 48 81.
Personality
Sai is quiet, restrained, and reluctant to explain himself. When he begins following Shuo, he keeps a precise distance and offers little account of his intentions. He often checks Shuo’s reaction before answering others, including when Obito asks whether they are friends 54 63 64.
Despite his apparent coldness, Sai warns Shuo about Danzo’s investigation because his brother taught him to tell people what they ought to know. His concern becomes increasingly practical: he buys breakfast, remembers Shuo’s preferred sweets, arranges their belongings, and takes over work so Shuo can rest 48 65 66 69.
Sai is meticulous in ordinary tasks. He folds bedding neatly, prepares cleaning supplies without prompting, cleans dust from table seams, and records warehouse inventory in exceptionally neat handwriting without mistakes 68 69 74 78.
His loyalty to Shuo eventually overrides both Root’s orders and concern for his own safety. He refuses to abandon Shuo when Pain threatens him, even while being strangled. Shuo’s repeated near-deaths also break through his usual composure, provoking anger, panic, and prolonged sleeplessness 120 124 134.

- Catches and supports him when exhaustion or injuries cause him to collapse 106 114 120.

Relationships
- Shuo / Uchiha Saku — Initially someone Sai warns about Root’s investigation; later his chosen ally, close companion, and roommate. Sai supplies meals, shares the shop-care routine, and repeatedly protects or nurses him through severe injuries. Shuo gives him shelter and reassures him that he is free after Root’s dissolution 48 63 65 81 120 124.
- Shin — Sai’s older brother, whose advice motivates his first warning to Shuo. Initially believed lost on a mission, Shin returns as a subject resurrected through Root’s forbidden techniques. He later reports resolving the threat from Root, resigns, rents a nearby home, and joins Sai and Shuo’s daily candy ritual 48 59 74 81.
- Danzo — Former superior through Root. His organization orders Sai to kill Shuo, creating the conflict that precedes Sai’s decision to remain with Shuo. Danzo’s death and Root’s disbandment end that obligation 59 61 63 81.
- Minato and Team Minato — Sai accompanies Minato, Obito, Rin, Kakashi, and Shuo on routine missions and later travels with them to the battlefield. Obito welcomes him as Shuo’s friend and compliments his new coat 54 56 63 69 83.
- Obito — Works alongside Sai during Shuo’s medical crises. After Sai keeps vigil for three days, Obito brings food and urges him to sleep 124.
History
Root and the Warning to Shuo
Sai is introduced as a ninja affiliated with Root. He voluntarily supplies information, with Shuo’s system noting that attitudes within the organization may differ 47.
At the sweets shop, Sai warns Shuo that Danzo is investigating his unusual abilities and that someone has leaked his registered kekkei genkai data. He explains that his older brother, who disappeared on a mission, taught him to inform people when they deserved to know something. Before leaving, Sai also tells Shuo that the shop’s owner is moving to Sunagakure and will close the business the following day 48.
Choosing Shuo over Root
Sai begins following Shuo and spending nights outside his dormitory. Shuo gradually includes him in meals and missions, while Sai warns him about escalating pressure from Root 54 56.
Shin then reappears and identifies himself as having been resurrected through Root’s forbidden techniques. He tells Sai that his next assignment is to eliminate Shuo within three days, with Shin supervising. The formal order arrives on the third morning, setting sunset as the deadline 59 61.
Sai subsequently tells Shuo that he has chosen his side and that Shin warned him not to return to Root. Shuo offers him a place to stay. When they apply for dormitory accommodation, Sai lists his current address as “none”; Shuo lets him remain in his room while they wait for a double room 63 65.
Life Together and Freedom from Root
Sai settles into a daily routine with Shuo, bringing breakfast, accompanying him on assignments, and spending quiet time beside the river. During a warehouse inventory mission, he takes over the records so Shuo can rest 65 69.
The two also maintain the closed confectionery shop, cleaning it and arranging candy on plates in the display window. Shin eventually visits their room and says that he has dealt with the Root threat. Later, he confirms that Danzo is dead, Root has been disbanded, and he has resigned 74 78 81.
When Shuo tells Sai that he is free too, Sai responds with a genuine smile and proposes that all three continue putting out candy together every day 81.
War and the Akatsuki
Sai accompanies Team Minato to the eastern battlefield and remains close to Shuo as he confronts Iwagakure forces. He later joins Shuo on the mission to protect Gaara in Sunagakure 83 98.
After Shuo defeats the Six Paths of Pain, Sai carries him from the ruins and watches over him through further threats and hospitalization. He again supports Shuo after the destruction of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and Rin’s rescue 104 105 106 114.
During another attack on Konoha, Shuo orders Sai to get Naruto away from the advancing statue. Later, Sai shields the gravely wounded Shuo from Pain and refuses to move, even when Pain pulls him forward and clamps his throat. After Shuo survives, Sai angrily confronts his casual attitude toward nearly dying 119 120.
Sai’s vigilance intensifies after another severe injury. He tries to stop Shuo’s bleeding and subsequently refuses to sleep for three days, insisting that Shuo will wake 124.
Kaguya and the Later Conflicts
As Kaguya’s return approaches, Sai helps Shuo recover intact plates from the ruined sweet shop. Before facing her, Shuo entrusts him with an old candy wrapper. When the light vanishes and Shuo falls apparently lifeless, Sai finds him in the darkness and holds his cold hand against his cheek 128 134 135.
After Miyoko’s candy revives Shuo, Sai helps him back to the shelter. He remains beside him as Kaguya’s fragments gather around their home and later informs him that Isshiki has recovered and that Kaguya cannot defeat him 136 148 154.
Sai is present when Shuo awakens after seven days and immediately runs to fetch water. Once the fighting is declared over, he leaves the ruins with Shuo, Isshiki, Little Black, and Kaguya’s fragments 173.
