Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chūnin — early portrayal | 13 | Shuo assesses the young Kakashi as having recently become a chūnin; no promotion scene is shown. |
| Jōnin — confirmed rank | 98 | Tsunade explicitly identifies him as a jōnin when assigning him to protect Naruto against Akatsuki. The promotion itself is not documented. |
Appearance
- Spiky silver hair: His most conspicuous physical feature when Shuo first meets him 13.
- Mask and partially concealed face: His initial description leaves only one dull-looking eye exposed 13.
- Listless gaze: Frequently described as having “dead-fish eyes,” even when alert or on duty 16 31.
- Back-mounted short sword: Carries a short blade that he draws for combat and training 13 18 28.
- Habitual resting posture: Often leans against a wall or tree, sometimes with a book covering his face 64 66 69.
Personality
Kakashi is terse, stern, and exacting about mission discipline. He repeatedly cuts off Obito’s chatter, calls him “dead last,” and corrects his shuriken technique. His own movements are efficient, and he often reviews an operation silently rather than joining the others’ conversation 13 15 16 24.
He is competitive without being unable to acknowledge another shinobi’s skill. After struggling to land a hit on Shuo, he calls him “very difficult to deal with” and promises to use Lightning Release next time. He later recognizes that Shuo’s apparent laziness conceals precise calculations and unusually economical combat technique 16 28 42.
His detached manner also conceals concern for his teammates. He tells Obito to let Shuo rest, warns Shuo to be careful before their separate protection assignments, and sincerely thanks him after receiving support during his crisis over Obito 40 98 109.
Abilities & Skills
Lightning Release
Kakashi uses lightning both to enhance close combat and to create hazardous training conditions 16 17.
- Muscle stimulation: His opening attacks against Shuo show signs of Lightning Release chakra stimulating his muscles, with faint crackling accompanying his punch 16.
- Lightning Release: Earth Flow: Produces an expanding field of randomly roaming electrical arcs for Shuo’s evasion training 17.
- Lightning Blade: Uses the named technique against a poison-covered monster’s joints and later against Iwagakure shinobi 35 83.
- Limits: The monster’s armor withstands his Lightning Blade, while a masked opponent’s chain deflects his Lightning Release during the convoy ambush 33 35.
Swordsmanship and Taijutsu
Kakashi combines rapid blade attacks with an aggressive, adaptable hand-to-hand style 16 18 28.
- Close-range pressure: Chains punches, kicks, elbows, and knees together to search for openings 16.
- Quick recovery: Converts a redirected punch into a low sweeping kick without pausing 16.
- Precision strikes: Uses his sword’s blunt edge to hit training puppets’ joints and occupy multiple puppets 28.
- Defensive interception: Knocks down incoming kunai and nets during an ambush 36.
- Limits: Shuo repeatedly disrupts his balance and attack rhythm through minimal redirections; after nearly five minutes, Kakashi is breathing harder than his opponent 16.
Earth Release
- Earth Release: Headhunter Jutsu: Targets the ground beneath Shuo during a practice match, prompting Shuo to escape by dissolving into light and reforming nearby 46.
- Battlefield preparation: Digs a hole beneath the armored monster’s foot as part of Shuo’s coordinated plan to expose its eye 35.
Reconnaissance and Interrogation
- Stealth scouting: Reconnoiters an occupied village and identifies perimeter traps and two guards with chūnin-level chakra 13.
- Advance warning: Serves as the forward scout for the medical-supply convoy bound for the Seventh Border Outpost 18.
- Capture and questioning: Subdues a concealed attacker and helps Minato question the prisoners, uncovering a rival trading company’s involvement 31.
Ninja Tools and Team Tactics
- Accurate throwing: Hits moving targets with shuriken and immediately exploits openings created by Shuo’s light manipulation 16 29.
- Movement control: Throws kunai to cut off Obito’s approach during sparring 46.
- Color-coded coordination: Uses specially marked kunai to communicate tactics to Shuo without speaking 46.
- Tactical analysis: Correctly explains Shuo’s approach as achieving an objective with the fewest movements and least energy 28.
- Complementary fighting style: His deliberate planning works effectively alongside Shuo’s instinctive interference once the pair establish clear signals 46.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Short sword: Carried on his back and used for lethal attacks, interception, and controlled joint strikes during training 13 18 28 36.
- Kunai and shuriken: Used for precision attacks, coordinated throwing, and restricting opponents’ movement 16 29 46.
- Color-coded kunai: Provided by Minato for silent tactical communication with Shuo; the handles are wrapped in red, yellow, blue, and green thread 46.
- Icha Icha Paradise: Frequently reads or carries a copy during downtime and mission travel 27 50 54.
Background / History
Joining Shuo’s Circle
Kakashi is already one of Minato Namikaze’s three subordinates, alongside Obito Uchiha and Rin Nohara, when Shuo joins them for a border mission. He scouts the first occupied village before taking an assault role beside Minato 13.
During the team’s first full coordination session with Shuo, Kakashi’s direct attacks fail to overcome Shuo’s evasive style. Subsequent exercises develop their cooperation: Kakashi protects him from training puppets, capitalizes on light-assisted openings, and eventually coordinates with him through color-coded kunai 16 28 29 46.
Border and Escort Missions
| Mission / Event | Kakashi’s involvement |
|---|---|
| Seventh Border Outpost operation | Scouts ahead of the supply convoy, engages attackers, and joins Minato’s predawn assault on the mercenary force threatening the outpost 18 23. |
| ANBU-supervised assignment | Returns from a mission accompanied by an unnamed senior ANBU operative, whom he identifies as his temporary supervisor 27. |
| Furukawa escort | Captures and interrogates an attacker, fights masked assailants, and helps execute the plan against an armored poisonous beast 31 33 35. |
| Iwagakure attack | Charges into the eastern battlefield behind Minato and fights enemy shinobi with his Lightning Blade 83. |
| Naruto protection assignment | Receives responsibility for guarding Naruto while Shuo protects Gaara in Sunagakure; promises Shuo that he will watch over Naruto 98. |
Obito’s Revelation
Tsunade selects Kakashi to accompany Shuo in dealing with the masked man because of his knowledge of Obito. Obito subsequently approaches Kakashi, removes his mask, and discusses Rin’s death, the Nine-Tails’ Attack, and the Eye of the Moon Plan. He invites Kakashi to help create a world where Rin remains alive 107 109.
Kakashi neither accepts nor refuses. After spending the night in turmoil at the Memorial Stone, he is found by Shuo. Shuo gives him chestnut candy and asks him to distinguish between wanting the real Rin and wanting a false version living in a dream. Kakashi returns to the village, visibly steadier, and thanks him 109.
When Shuo later reports Obito’s seven-day plan to revive Rin, Kakashi remains deeply affected but warns that Obito will not stop once he has committed himself. Afterward, Kakashi walks beside Rin and Obito on the return to Konoha, their quiet companionship reminding Minato of their childhood team 113 115.
Later Village Crises
- Pain’s invasion: Joins Shuo, Obito, Sai, and Gaara against the Six Paths of Pain at Konoha’s east gate; the group defeats four Paths before the remaining two withdraw 118.
- Ten-Tails threat: Gathers with Konoha’s leadership and allies as the dark cloud identified as the Ten-Tails’ true body descends over the village 121.
- Kaguya crisis: Attends the emergency meeting confirming Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s survival and hears Obito’s account of the prophecy concerning an opponent wielding light 128 130.
- Kaguya’s return: Stands with Tsunade, Minato, Obito, and Sai as they watch Kaguya eating candy with Shuo and her fragments 152.
Relationships
- Minato Namikaze — Teacher and team leader. Entrusts Kakashi with scouting, frontline combat, and tactical cooperation with Shuo; later helps bring him home after his night at the Memorial Stone 13 18 46 109.
- Shuo / Uchiha Saku — Teammate, sparring partner, and source of emotional support. Initial scrutiny develops into respect for Shuo’s combat efficiency, while Shuo helps him confront Obito’s invitation without condemning his uncertainty 16 28 42 46 109.
- Obito Uchiha — Teammate and frequent rival. Their early relationship features arguments and sharp criticism; Obito’s later revelation and invitation to the Eye of the Moon Plan leave Kakashi deeply conflicted. Chestnut candy recalls occasions when Obito shared it with him 15 17 109.
- Rin Nohara — Teammate whose death becomes central to Kakashi’s conflict with Obito. Obito states that she died at Kakashi’s hands; the possibility of recovering the real Rin, rather than a dream substitute, shapes Shuo’s advice to him 108 109.
- Naruto — Assigned protectee. Kakashi accepts responsibility for guarding him against Akatsuki and personally reassures Shuo before their deployments 98.
