Background / History
Team Minato
Obito is introduced as a young Uchiha serving under Minato alongside Kakashi Hatake and Rin Nohara. He immediately welcomes Uchiha Saku, usually addressed as Shuo, as a fellow clansman and senior ninja. During their first mission together, he repeatedly tries to start conversations despite Kakashi’s insistence that he remain focused 13.
His early training centers on shuriken throwing, taijutsu, Fire Release, and teamwork. He works well with Rin when he follows her reminders, but his tendency to rush ahead creates openings and exposes him to traps. Minato also assigns him exercises in maintaining Fire Release while Rin interferes with it using medical chakra 16 17 29.
Obito participates in medical-supply escorts, border-outpost fighting, and the protection of Furukawa’s cargo. His fireballs provide support but repeatedly prove insufficient against stronger attacks or agile enemies. Against an armored poisonous monster, he follows Shuo’s instruction to fire into a muddy patch, producing splashing water and steam rather than attacking the creature directly 18 22 32 33 35.
During an Iwagakure attack, he protects Rin while she treats wounded ninja, throwing kunai swiftly and accurately. He subsequently helps the Medical Team and enthusiastically reports the village’s praise of Shuo’s battlefield achievements 83 85.
Presumed Death and Rin’s Loss
Later accounts establish that Obito was believed dead and that his name was carved into Konoha’s Memorial Stone. When he reveals himself to Shuo, he says that he died once and returned to life, without explaining the mechanism 108 109.
Obito witnessed Rin die at Kakashi’s hands. The loss becomes the central motive behind his pursuit of a world without war and his Eye of the Moon Plan—a dream world in which Rin would still be alive. Minato also identifies the masked man as the person who controlled the Nine-Tails during an earlier devastation of Konoha 105 108 109.
Akatsuki and the Masked Identity
Obito arrives with Kakuzu, Hidan, Sasori, and Kisame after Shuo’s battle against Pain. Although Shuo is severely injured, Obito withdraws when he demonstrates that he can still produce light, declining to gamble on another confrontation 105.
Operating as Tobi, he observes Shuo’s recovery and visits the sweet shop associated with him. He leaves a signed note after taking six candies, then appears across the street and disappears through a distortion in space. In private, he tells Pain that Shuo’s light can deal with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, even if the outcome means Shuo’s death or recruitment 107.
Obito eventually removes his mask before Shuo and asks for help saving someone. Their conversation exposes Rin’s death as his driving obsession. Shuo rejects the salvation offered by Infinite Tsukuyomi and gives him a chestnut candy instead; Obito accepts it but warns that they will be enemies when they next meet 108.
He also reveals himself to Kakashi and invites him to join the Eye of the Moon Plan. Kakashi refuses. Obito then returns to Shuo, seeking another route to restoring Rin and questioning him about the Rinnegan’s ability to revive the dead 109 110.
Rin’s Rescue and Defection
Obito brings Shuo into his attempt to recover Rin, whose faint consciousness is held inside the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. After committing to the attempt despite its risks, he meets Shuo’s group at a cave behind a waterfall between statues of Madara and Hashirama 111 112 114.
When their initial approach fails, Obito chooses to activate the statue and attempt to revive the Ten-Tails, insisting that this is the only way to release Rin. Shuo withstands the resulting collision of chakra and light and emerges carrying her. Obito embraces Rin and breaks down crying 114.
Afterward, he returns toward Konoha with Rin, Kakashi, and Minato. His hostility and fixation visibly subside, and he personally thanks Shuo again at the hospital. Konan subsequently reports that Obito has defected completely from Akatsuki 115.
Fighting Alongside Konoha
Obito joins the defense against Pain and the White Zetsu, declaring that he owes Shuo regardless of whether his help is requested. He uses spatial distortion against a charging White Zetsu and destroys Asura Path during the battle 118.
When a dark cloud appears over the village, Obito identifies it as the Ten-Tails’ true body. He explains that the previously destroyed statue was only its husk and estimates that the creature will awaken within three days 121.
During the Ten-Tails’ attack, Obito reports that Rin’s consciousness is inside it and uses Kamui to take himself and Shuo into the beast. Unable to break through the barrier surrounding her, he follows Shuo’s advice and calls out to Rin. His voice and a cherished orange candy wrapper reach her; she awakens, the barrier shatters, and they reunite 122.
Obito later uses Kamui to remove hostile chakra and black residue from Shuo’s wound. As the threat shifts toward Kaguya, he supplies information about her sealed body, identifies an earlier manifestation as a projection, and produces an Ōtsutsuki record describing someone who would oppose her with light. He remains active afterward, delivering Tsunade’s summons to the Five Kage Summit 124 128 130 146.
Appearance
- Youthful appearance: A lively-looking Uchiha boy who wears goggles 13.
- Akatsuki attire: A cloak and a mask exposing a single Sharingan; his Tobi appearance uses a spiral mask 105 106.
- Unmasked appearance: A weathered face, recognizable to Shuo from photographs and Konoha’s mission records 108 114.
- After Rin’s rescue: Appears without his mask while speaking happily with Minato, with tear tracks still visible on his face 114.
Personality
As a young teammate, Obito is exuberant, talkative, competitive, and easily distracted. He exaggerates his battlefield accomplishments, protests Kakashi’s “dead last” insults, and persistently questions Shuo about techniques he finds impressive. His enthusiasm also drives him to practice harder when frustrated by his shortcomings 15 17 24 68.
His masked persona alternates between Tobi’s exaggerated flippancy and a cold, controlled manner. Beneath both lies unresolved grief: discussions of Rin make him visibly tremble, and his determination to recover her leads him to accept potentially catastrophic risks. Nevertheless, he remains capable of hesitation and attachment, carefully preserving candy wrappers connected to his encounters with Shuo 106 108 110 114.
After Rin’s rescue, his obsession gives way to warmth and gratitude. He repeatedly thanks Shuo, insists on helping him against Pain, and attempts to treat his wounds despite the distress of reliving his inability to save Rin 115 118 124.
Abilities & Skills
Kamui
Obito uses Kamui to distort space for travel, combat, and precise interference with foreign chakra 118 122 124.
- Spatial travel: Appears and disappears through twisting space, including during visits to Konoha 107 110 111.
- Transporting others: Takes himself and Shuo inside the Ten-Tails 122.
- Offensive distortion: Twists apart a White Zetsu and tears apart Asura Path 118.
- Chakra removal: Peels chakra and black residue away from Shuo’s wound. The procedure causes severe pain, and Obito says he cannot make it gentler 124.
Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique
Great Fireball is Obito’s most frequently demonstrated early ninjutsu 15 18 32 46.
- Uses fireballs to intercept attacks, pressure opponents, and force training puppets to reposition 18 29 33.
- Creates steam and splashing mud by firing at terrain on Shuo’s instructions 35.
- Early power is limited: one much-boasted fireball is described as a tiny flame, and another only partially cancels an enemy combination attack 15 18.
- Agile opponents can evade the technique without losing momentum 32.
Sharingan and Nine-Tails Control
Obito’s masked appearance exposes a single Sharingan. Minato recognizes him as the man responsible for controlling the Nine-Tails during its earlier attack on Konoha 105.
- The circumstances of his Sharingan’s awakening are not described in these chapters.
- The account attributes control of the Nine-Tails to him but does not detail the technique used 105.
Ninja Tools and Close Combat
Obito trains with shuriken, kunai, and taijutsu, with early performance frequently undermined by impatience or distraction 16 28 29.
- Achieves roughly a seventy-percent hit rate during a paired throwing exercise with Rin 16.
- Lands a punch on Kakashi when Shuo distorts Kakashi’s vision during a team exercise 46.
- Throws kunai swiftly and accurately while protecting Rin on the battlefield 83.
- Kills a boar with a kunai after Shuo’s light creates an opening 54.
Tailed-Beast and Ōtsutsuki Knowledge
Obito provides information about the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, the Ten-Tails, and Kaguya 114 121 128 130.
- Activates the statue through hand seals during the attempt to rescue Rin 114.
- Distinguishes the Ten-Tails’ true body from its husk and estimates its awakening time 121.
- Identifies Kaguya’s manifestation as a projection and locates her sealed body on the Far Side of the Moon 128.
- Finds an Ōtsutsuki record containing a prophecy about opposition to Kaguya through light 130.
