Background / History
Family and School Years
Sirius came from the pure-blood Black family but entered Gryffindor rather than following his predecessors into Slytherin. At Hogwarts, he became exceptionally close to James Potter. Hagrid remembered the pair as practically inseparable troublemakers whom he repeatedly chased out of the Forbidden Forest; Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew belonged to the same circle 174 240.
At sixteen, Sirius ran away from home and was taken in by James’s parents, Fleamont and Euphemia Potter. They treated him as their own child. After inheriting his uncle Alphard Black’s estate and buying a flat, he continued visiting the Potters for meals every weekend 263.
Following graduation, Sirius fought against Voldemort and made contributions acknowledged by Dumbledore. He and James also investigated the Gaunt family home for information that might help their cause, without finding evidence connecting Voldemort to the family 174 318.
Imprisonment and Escape
After James and Lily Potter died, Sirius was treated as a follower of Voldemort and sent directly to Azkaban without a trial. Douglas’s account emphasized that Sirius had not defended himself and had reportedly laughed until his imprisonment 174.
News of his escape presented him as armed and extremely dangerous. Having already seen Sirius’s dog form in Peter Pettigrew’s memories, Douglas instructed Dobby to patrol near Harry’s home and capture any unfamiliar large stray dog 155 162.
Dobby eventually caught Sirius with an Immortal-Binding Rope. Once brought to Douglas, Sirius transformed back into a man and demanded information about the traitor he was pursuing. Douglas physically restrained him, held a wand against his chest, and insisted that he recover before seeking revenge. Sirius calmed down because he did not want to die while the traitor remained free 162.
Concealment and Harry’s Investigation
Douglas concealed Sirius while Harry and his friends investigated the accusations against him. Sirius used his dog form to hide his identity, although Douglas was willing to reveal the secret to trusted colleagues such as McGonagall 193 198.
During this period, Douglas installed a classroom-monitoring mirror in his office specifically so Sirius could watch his godson every day. Harry, unaware that Padfoot was Sirius, fed him bones, played Frisbee with him, and petted him 203 252.
The investigation became entangled with Harry’s mistaken belief that Sirius was a werewolf. Harry connected Sirius’s name, his feud with Snape, and Snape’s werewolf lessons into a theory that even reached the Ministry. Meanwhile, the students began questioning whether Peter Pettigrew, rather than Sirius, had been the Potters’ Secret Keeper 209 232 239.
By the time Douglas revealed Padfoot’s identity, Harry understood that Sirius was innocent. Their subsequent meeting was initially awkward, with both standing speechless. During the celebration that followed, Sirius offered Harry a home at the Black family’s ancestral house in London, or continued companionship at Douglas’s house if Harry preferred 252 253 254.
Regulus’s Sacrifice
Returning to the ancestral home forced Sirius to confront his family’s hostility. His mother’s portrait denounced him, while Kreacher obeyed him reluctantly and insulted his companions. Although Sirius had been removed from the family tree, he remained the house’s master under the Black family’s inheritance tradition 265 270.
Kreacher’s account revealed that Sirius’s younger brother, Regulus, had stolen Voldemort’s locket Horcrux and died in the process. Sirius ordered Kreacher never to disclose the discovery. Douglas also pressed Sirius to acknowledge that neither he nor Kreacher could simply escape their bond to the family 270.
Sirius later helped recover Regulus’s body from the lake in Voldemort’s cavern. He silently cleaned his brother’s remains, agreed to a burial there, and joined Douglas, Lupin, and Dumbledore in magically protecting the resting place 277.
Director of Academic Affairs
Sirius became Hogwarts’s Director of Academic Affairs with Douglas’s support. Douglas identified two practical reasons for choosing him: his loyalty to Dumbledore and the Black name’s influence over governors and pure-blood parents. McGonagall accepted the appointment on the condition that he treat every student fairly 328.
His administration combined strict enforcement with theatrical teaching. He delivered a two-hour school-rules lecture through entertaining stories, then introduced a giant board game in which students competed for House points using Magic Dice 334.
His authority also limited professors’ disciplinary discretion: non-academic point deductions required his approval. Hermione later invoked this rule to prevent Snape from deducting points from Gryffindor 577.
Sirius’s stricter role did not exempt Harry from discipline. Harry felt singled out after his godfather took office, while Peeves accused Sirius of betraying mischief. Sirius also authorized Filch to use a whip against rule-breaking spirits 346 873.
Marauders Power Company
Sirius became the public face of Marauders Power Company’s protective technology. When Scrimgeour challenged the arrangements for a werewolf gala, Sirius revealed that Silvermane Academy’s werewolf graduates had tripled Peace Protective Amulet production while reducing costs by forty percent. He presented the gala as both a product launch and an opportunity for cheaper Auror equipment, following a negotiation plan supplied by Douglas 590.
During preparations for the Triwizard Tournament, Sirius turned the students’ attempts to breach the Black Lake Defense System into a final assessment for Fred and George’s Research and Development Department. Their task was to stop the intrusions without bodily harm while demonstrating the system’s capabilities 668.
At a major press conference, Sirius marketed a blood-activated home-defense device that required no spell memorization. He emphasized its defensive endurance, automatic Auror alerts, and recognition of the Ministry’s authority. Demand subsequently overwhelmed the company’s ledgers, communications, and warehouse 707 730.
The company’s success also challenged Voldemort’s reliance on fear. Voldemort explicitly condemned Douglas and Sirius for making standardized protection available to ordinary households, thereby weakening the foundations of his intended rule 735.
Azkaban Operations
Sirius participated in an operation that transported prisoners toward a pagoda under the pretense of breaking them out. When the prisoners protested, he gleefully explained that he had promised an escape—not a choice of destination or means of travel 893.
Later, while meeting Fudge with Lupin in Diagon Alley, Sirius received an emergency alert from the company’s North Sea surveillance array. It reported violent Dark Magic at Azkaban and displayed the message, “The North Sea, the Dark Mark!” 896.
He also assisted Douglas, Lupin, and Bill in delivering captured Death Eaters to the island reeducation center, where their treatment was tied to research contributions 1125.
Educational Reform and Ministry Pressure
Umbridge alternated between courting Sirius as a wealthy security magnate and accusing him of helping Dumbledore build a private army. She confronted him when he attempted to leave Hogwarts with a sealed case, alleging that it contained evidence of illicit funds; Sirius defended it as containing family and company materials, operational authorizations, and school ledgers 938 958.
Behind the public disputes, Sirius continued coordinating with Douglas. Douglas instructed him to remove rigid formalities while retaining morning runs, mistake correction, and assessment rankings. Sirius also proposed a joint assessment with Uagadou and agreed to present the educational system as a Black family-led initiative 1059.
Sirius later joined McGonagall, Sprout, Flitwick, and Snape in signing a letter challenging Umbridge’s authority over teaching reports, evaluations, and resource quotas. He planned to use her response to expose her overreach 1093.
His company faced increasingly formal regulation. Sirius complained that restrictions on offensive magical-energy devices effectively singled out his business. Nevertheless, he continued negotiating Ministry purchases, including protective Auror uniforms offered in exchange for combat-test data 1162 1168.
Appearance
Sirius’s appearance changes markedly between his escape from Azkaban and his recovery under Douglas’s protection 162 253.
- Before imprisonment: Tall and thin, with refined features, elegant black hair, striking gray eyes, and a warm smile; photographs capture a carefree, casually arrogant manner 236.
- Immediately after escape: Skeletal, with waxy skin stretched over his cheekbones, sunken eyes, yellow teeth, and filthy, tangled hair reaching his elbows 162.
- After recovery: Again tall and handsome, with black hair falling before his eyes, a beard, and a fuller build resembling his old photographs 253.
- Animagus form: A large black dog known to Harry as Padfoot 252.
Personality
Sirius is fiercely attached to people he considers his own. James’s family remained important to him long after he left home, and his longing to be near Harry prompted Douglas to arrange daily viewing through the classroom mirror. He readily offered Harry both a home and companionship 203 254 263.
His persistence can become obsession. Douglas explicitly regards him as impulsive and insufficiently attentive to consequences, especially when revenge or the Black family is involved. His initial confrontation with Douglas illustrates this tendency: he grabs Douglas’s collar and demands answers despite his exhausted condition 162 270.
Sirius enjoys performance, provocation, and dramatic reversals. He boasts about his looks, savors a stunned audience, mocks the Malfoys during a product launch, and jokes with prisoners caught in his supposed escape scheme. As an administrator, however, he is willing to impose rules strongly enough to alienate both Harry and Peeves 328 346 707 873 893.
His rejection of his family’s beliefs coexists with a willingness to use its authority. He dislikes being a Black, yet invokes his position as the last male bearer of the name to command Kreacher and accepts the political usefulness of his surname at Hogwarts 270 328.
