Night soon fell.
Campfires sprang up throughout the convoy.
There were Lin Yi, Da Sha, Elder Qi, Bai Xiaoyu, Li Yong, the blind Da Hu, and Bai Xiaoyu's close friend, a petite adult woman standing 155 centimeters tall named Xiao Zhao.
The seven sat around a fire, with scalding, boiling water before them.
Dinner was a large pot of boiled vegetables. Lin Yi had contributed food, so he was not eating for free.
The main reason was that Elder Qi had something to tell them, and mealtime was a convenient opportunity.
"I observed those villagers during the day. They're normal. They can die, and they bleed."
At this point, Elder Qi's tone grew solemn. "From the looks of things, the anomaly Da Sha saw is actually hiding among those villagers."
"So far, I still can't identify it."
Bai Xiaoyu picked up a piece of potato and ate it, clearly having no intention of joining the conversation.
Li Yong, however, spoke up. "Then should we test them directly?"
"No." Elder Qi shook his head. "If we anger it or trigger a rule, we could be in even more trouble."
Of course, there was something Elder Qi left unsaid.
The main problem is that our team is full of misfits. Not one of us can fight.
The only one who can fight is blind.
If we anger it, what are we going to fight it with?
Silence fell.
A look of conflict kept flickering across Elder Qi's face.
A long while passed.
Elder Qi sighed deeply, seeming to age considerably in an instant.
"An anomaly hiding in the convoy will always be a threat."
"As the spark of humanity's survival, Sequence Transcendence is clearly more important."
"Tomorrow..."
"Tomorrow, we'll have no choice but to sacrifice some of the survivors without vehicles..."
As he said this, Elder Qi slowly closed his eyes. He had clearly made a very difficult decision.
The survivors without vehicles were not just those villagers.
Even though quite a few of the original survivors had found vehicles while gathering supplies.
There were still around several dozen people without vehicles.
They would probably all be lost in this attempt to shed the tail to survive.
"That's what we'll do."
Elder Qi made his final decision.
Even his body seemed to stoop a little more as he leaned on his cane and walked toward the modified heavy truck, step by step.
After Elder Qi left, the silence deepened.
Only Bai Xiaoyu kept noisily shoveling food into her mouth.
What surprised Lin Yi was that this young woman clearly ate plenty, yet she looked as though she weighed only forty-odd kilograms...
That night.
Lin Yi lay in the driver's seat, toying with the Blood Dagger.
Beside him, Da Sha was fast asleep, snoring away.
Lin Yi had already grown used to this carefree fellow.
His vehicle was parked in a corner where no one could see into the driver's seat.
"Whew."
Lin Yi took a deep breath, slowly bringing the Blood Dagger toward his chest.
He could even feel the wondrous item trembling in his hand.
It seemed to be urging him on.
Hurry. Hurry up.
Shnk.
Lin Yi gritted his teeth.
The Blood Dagger plunged into his heart.
In an instant, pain struck him with almost suffocating force.
Like a hideous, gaping abyss, the Blood Dagger greedily sucked up the blood supplied by his heart.
It hurts! It hurts so much!
Lin Yi clenched his teeth, his pale face contorting.
He had thought the pain would last only an instant.
But with his heart pierced, not only did he remain alive, he had to endure the pain brought by Sequence Holy Mother.
Waves of pain battered his brain, nearly making him pass out several times.
The ravenous Blood Blade showed no sign of stopping, as though it would not quit until it had drained Lin Yi dry!
"Hah, hah, hah."
Lin Yi gasped for breath.
Sure enough, nothing good in this world came easily.
At the rear of the convoy.
Xiao Chusheng got out of his jeep, planning to find somewhere deserted to relieve himself.
Just then, a slender figure emerged from the convoy.
Xiao Chusheng was wary at first, but when he saw her face, he could not help smiling. "Hey, little lady. Need something?"
The girl was one of the surviving villagers. Looking terrified, she approached Xiao Chusheng before cautiously asking, "Mister, could you give me something to eat? I'm really starving..."
"Something to eat?" Xiao Chusheng looked the girl up and down.
She was 160 centimeters tall and thin. Her looks were average, but in the apocalypse, what difference did that make?
He licked his dry lips, his face covered in a lecherous grin. "Food? Of course I have some, but..."
Under his blatant gaze, the girl murmured, "All right."
"Heh heh heh."
Xiao Chusheng led the girl to a deserted corner.
"Little lady, you mustn't scream."
Xiao Chusheng's face shone with lust.
He walked toward the girl while undoing his belt.
Unexpectedly, the pitiful girl's expression changed into an eerie smile. "Hehe, I won't scream."
Her hands shot out, closing around Xiao Chusheng's neck before he could react.
Crack.
A barely audible sound rang out.
Only terror remained in Xiao Chusheng's eyes, and he stopped breathing.
"Heh heh heh."
The girl laughed sinisterly.
Her hands were like sharp claws, and she made a single light swipe.
Xiao Chusheng's skin slipped off with ease.
Then...
The girl grabbed the top of her own head, and her skin fell away as well, revealing a scarlet skeleton!
The skeleton burrowed into Xiao Chusheng's flesh and writhed, quickly taking on his outline. Then, with practiced ease, it donned Xiao Chusheng's skin.
In the blink of an eye, a lifelike Xiao Chusheng appeared!
His gaze and movements were exactly the same as before.
"Heh heh heh..."
Xiao Chusheng laughed sinisterly and walked toward the convoy, step by step.
Just then.
"Aah!"
A piercing male scream rang through the convoy.
Vroom! Vroom! Vroom!
At the same time, several modified vehicles at the front of the sleeping convoy roared awake like giant beasts and sped away without hesitation.
The survivors reacted, frantically starting their vehicles and trying to catch up with the departing modified convoy.
"R-Ruyan, what happened to you...?"
Lu Sheng's eyes widened as he stared in terror at the woman in the passenger seat.
Liu Ruyan had just been making love with him. How had she suddenly become like this?!
Liu Ruyan looked withered, her eyes bulging. It was as though all the flesh and blood in her body had been drained away, leaving her as emaciated as a desiccated corpse that had been dead for countless years!
"S-sorry. D-don't come after me."
Trembling, Lu Sheng kicked Liu Ruyan out of the vehicle, then floored the accelerator and sped away, leaving only the shriveled corpse swaying in the wind.
The modified convoy raced ahead.
They all thought the anomaly among the villagers had caused trouble.
They began fleeing with almost no hesitation.
Lin Yi, of course, knew what had happened.
Still, having the anomaly hiding in the convoy take the blame was naturally the best outcome.
He had already bound the Blood Dagger to himself, and it now lay quietly in the back seat.
Whenever he needed it, he could retrieve it with Divine Thief.
Liu Ruyan's contribution had disappeared.
The contribution above Da Sha's head replaced Liu Ruyan's and turned red.
Lin Yi merely glanced at it before looking away, continuing to follow close behind the convoy.
Because the apocalyptic heavy truck needed to clear the way, its speed was considerably slower.
Before long, quite a few survivors' vehicles had caught up from behind.
After a night of fleeing, the modified heavy truck finally slowed as the sky began to turn pale with dawn.
"All right, let's rest for a bit."
Elder Qi's voice came over the walkie-talkie, and the four vehicles pulled over one after another.
Behind them, more than a dozen survivors' vehicles had actually managed to keep up.
The jeep Lin Yi recognized was among them.
Elder Qi looked rather grim.
After shedding their tail this time, the convoy's surviving population had probably dropped to a hundred.
Fortunately, they had resolved the hidden danger within the survivors' convoy.
Lin Yi's gaze swept repeatedly over the vehicles behind them.
Now that Liu Ruyan was gone, he needed to find a new target to replace Da Sha.
Da Sha was a Sequence Transcendent, after all. Unless he absolutely had to die, keeping him around would still be of some use.
Soon, Lin Yi found a new target.
The man who had once helped Huang Nana-Xiao Chusheng!
