Background / History

Early Life

Shi Yu had already encountered unexplained warnings before the school incident. Three people who gave him a particular feeling of terror subsequently died; Liu Zunfu became the fourth. His sensitivity was inconsistent, sometimes offering only vague emotional impressions when he tried to understand something 1 2.

By the time he joined Snow Cedar, Shi Yu had been without family for a long time and was accustomed to managing daily life and difficult decisions alone. During an earlier period of helplessness, he discovered a secluded mountain clearing that became a refuge 20 24 44.

School Netherworld Incident

After sensing danger around Liu Zunfu, Shi Yu used horror novels as an indirect way to warn him about evil entities. Liu Zunfu dismissed the warnings. Following his disappearance, Shi Yu warned Hu Zihao that he might be targeted next 1 2.

Han He recognized that Shi Yu possessed unusual abilities and initially suspected the Witch Sacrifice inheritance’s tenth art, Daze. Shi Yu denied having studied or received any inheritance. Together with Hu Zihao, they investigated the school’s increasingly distorted memories and perceptions 3 4 6.

Shi Yu awakened Coincidence while helping Han He free Hu Zihao from a sealed washroom. He subsequently used Thought to arrange an encounter with a police officer, but consecutive uses exhausted his Origin and left him severely disoriented 6 9 10.

Later, an imitation of Han He lured him into the Inner World, where Zhang Ya imprisoned him in a wardrobe as nourishment for an abomination. Shi Yu escaped through Thought and hurried to help Hu Zihao. After Liu Yiyi rescued the injured boy, Shi Yu detected Origin in him and recognized that he had also awakened 12 14.

Following the rescue, Shi Yu learned that caretaker Huang Daye had been killed after contacting the police. He found the caretaker’s written warning and later accompanied Han He into the mountains to bury the rings associated with Huang Daye’s final request, pouring baijiu over the burial site 18 44.

Joining Stars

Shi Yu accepted Liu Yiyi’s invitation despite his fear of dying, reasoning that running away would not solve his situation. He also concluded that the authorities were divided over whether to reveal supernatural threats to the public 19 20 21.

During a hospital visit, he noticed something wrong with an apparent nurse and helped subdue her after she injected Hu Zihao. Shen Bai identified the attacker, Li Yan, as a Curtain-Caller. Shi Yu later explained to Hu Zihao why remaining outside the organization could leave him vulnerable to both hostile Gifted and official exploitation 25 27.

Shi Yu formally joined Stars by signing its empowered membership document. His ability registration listed “Psychological Suggestion”, rather than fully describing Thought. After hearing his actual capabilities, Shen Bai and Liu Yiyi strongly reinforced the need for secrecy 28 30 33.

First Day of Duty

At Snow Cedar’s abandoned-factory meeting place, Shi Yu, Han He, and Hu Zihao faced a surprise combat assessment against He Siying. Shi Yu combined telekinesis and Coincidence to deflect flying boards, protect Hu Zihao from an iron frame, and get sand into He Siying’s eye. The three were nevertheless decisively defeated 47 48.

He then received police credentials, bank cards, and a standard-issue firearm. His physical assessment showed excellent reflexes and coordination but poor stamina. After finishing his first day as an Anomaly Handling Specialist, he celebrated with Han He and Hu Zihao, toasting to being seventeen 49 50.

Appearance

  • Height: Just reaches approximately 170 cm, noticeably shorter than Han He and Hu Zihao, who both exceed 180 cm 40.
  • Build: Relatively frail beside his two friends; Liu Yiyi identifies his physique as an area requiring training 33.
  • Ability tell: His eyes glimmer when using Thought, with a silver flicker visible during combat. Han He observes that ordinary telekinesis does not produce the same glow 37 47 48.

Personality

Shi Yu is cautious, afraid of death, and willing to acknowledge his own selfishness. He initially distances himself from Hu Zihao’s dangerous presence and considers avoiding involvement altogether. Nevertheless, he repeatedly acts despite that fear, helping rescue Hu Zihao and choosing to confront supernatural threats through the authorities 1 6 20.

He habitually considers worst-case scenarios, including the possibility that officials might use families as leverage. This suspicion accompanies a quick, analytical mind: he evaluates the Evil Sins’ behavior, recognizes gaps in official explanations, and earns Huo Qiuliang’s assessment that he is exceptionally sharp 4 21 34.

His self-reliance conceals a strong need for support. Han He’s confidence in him moves him to tears, and he increasingly regards his two fellow survivors as people with whom he can face danger rather than remain alone. Joining Snow Cedar gives him a clearer direction and reduces his indecision 24 34 40.

Shi Yu also has a practical, humorous side. He asks about the team’s allowance, treats his new bank cards with exaggerated reverence, and objects to standing between his much taller friends 21 46 49.

Abilities & Skills

Thought — Coincidence

The Staircase of Thought allows Shi Yu to bring about desired outcomes within reasonable limits, provided he firmly believes in them and the necessary conditions exist 33.

  • Event influence: Breaks a washroom latch, opens a deteriorating wardrobe, and makes one airborne board knock aside several others 6 14 47.
  • Personal influence: Makes Hu Zihao believe his warning, causes Huo Qiuliang to sneeze and suffer stomach trouble, and compels Han He to turn his head 1 24 40.
  • Required conditions: Cannot create circumstances from nothing. Filling an empty bottle, for example, requires a nearby water source and some means of opening the bottle 13.
  • Range restrictions: Both his influence and the conditions surrounding the target must fall within applicable ranges; no numerical distance is given 13.
  • Scale restrictions: Cannot influence an event involving too many people at once 13.
  • Activation limits: Requires concentration and may take time to work, leaving him vulnerable to sudden attacks 40.
  • Origin cost: Repeated use can cause exhaustion, confusion, and severe distraction. Merely getting sand into the much stronger He Siying’s eye consumes 90% of his Origin without meaningfully changing the fight 10 48.

Telekinesis / Psychokinesis

Shi Yu can move objects at a distance, although their weight and the force he can apply are limited 33.

  • Initially controls one or two objects by sight; hand gestures improve precision and allow him to manage four or five 9.
  • Uses household cleanup to practice coordinating multiple objects in sequence 24 40.
  • Stops a thrown persimmon less than two centimeters from his nose and intercepts dangerous debris during combat 40 47 48.
  • At his early level, can transport dishes but cannot turn a faucet handle. Moving liquids is difficult and causes spillage 40.

Intuition and Deduction

Thought can guide Shi Yu toward conclusions he could otherwise reach through investigation, strengthening both his reasoning and the likelihood of arriving at the truth 33 34.

  • Senses danger and fear before fully understanding his ability, though these impressions are unreliable 1 2.
  • Recognizes that the apparent Yang Desheng is not the real man and notices something wrong with the impostor nurse 3 25.
  • Detects Hu Zihao’s awakened Origin while checking his injuries 14.
  • Does not provide blanket immunity to deception: the school’s distorted perceptions allow an imitation of Han He to lure him away 12.

Physical Aptitude

  • Awakening improves his body even though Thought does not specialize in physical enhancement 44.
  • Shows practiced agility on difficult mountain terrain and excellent reflexes and coordination during testing 44 50.
  • Remains weak in sustained exertion, failing Snow Cedar’s stamina assessment 50.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Han He’s talisman — A carefully made protective charm incorporating Bird Feathers and a Beast Fang 24.
  • Forged protective items — Iron objects made by Liu Yiyi to provide protection and ward off harm; the welcome package includes finely detailed Pixiu figures 33 41.
  • Protective dolls — Sewn by Shen Bai with effects similar to the forged protective items 33.
  • Police credentials — Identify him as “Stars. Snow Cedar: Anomaly Handling Specialist.” Provide access to most places and authority one rank higher in supernatural cases 49.
  • Two bank cards — Issued alongside his credentials as part of his entry into official service 49.
  • Standard-issue firearm — Issued with specially made bullets capable of injuring and killing low-level Evil Sins; intended as convenient early equipment before his fighting style develops 49.

Relationships

  • Han He — Deskmate, fellow survivor, teammate, and houseguest. Explains Heirs, provides protective equipment, tests Shi Yu’s abilities, and gives him emotional guidance when he struggles with his future 4 24 37 40.
  • Hu Zihao — Classmate, close friend, and teammate. Shi Yu warns him of danger, helps save him, recognizes his awakening, and encourages him to join Snow Cedar 1 6 14 27.
  • Liu Yiyi — Snow Cedar’s captain and Shi Yu’s recruiter. Rescues Hu Zihao, insists that Shi Yu conceal Thought’s true capabilities, and plans training suited to his abilities 14 19 33.
  • Shen Bai — Vice-captain and mentor. Handles Shi Yu’s induction and equipment, explains supernatural threats, and warns him about the attention his Staircase could attract 29 33 49.
  • Huo Qiuliang — Teammate with a teasing, intrusive manner. Explains Staircase potential and advises Shi Yu to conceal his ten steps; Shi Yu retaliates against his ability demonstration with sneezing and stomach trouble 23 24.
  • He Siying — Senior teammate and combat assessor. Overwhelms Shi Yu and his friends during their first assessment, exposing the gap between their abilities and trained combat performance 47 48.
  • Huang Daye — School caretaker whose attempt to summon help costs him his life. Shi Yu discovers his warning and helps carry out his final request 18 44.
  • Granny Sun — An elderly acquaintance who worries about his well-being and eating habits. Shi Yu reassures her after the school incident and uses Thought to check that her walk will be safe 37 40.

Trivia

  • Shi Yu’s horror novels serve both as reading material for Liu Zunfu and as an unsuccessful means of warning him about supernatural danger 1 2.
  • His three-person group chat with Han He and Hu Zihao is named “Concave,” matching his complaint that their height difference forms that shape when he stands between them 40 45.
