Background / History

Jieyin and Zhunti attained Sagehood by making the Forty-Eight Great Vows, a method described as “borrowing” to become Sages. Jieyin later describes his cultivation as the first tier of Hun Yuan Da Luo. Both entrusted fragments of their innate undying true spirits to the Heavenly Dao, which sustains their immortality but leaves them subject to its control 40 63 75.

During the Wu–Demon war, Zhunti entered Tanggu Valley and used the Western Salvation Technique to lure out the Ten Golden Crows. Their departure caused widespread deaths and helped ignite the war. When Chen Xuan, acting through Houtu, exposed the scheme, both Western Sages denied it; Nuwa then traced the past and identified Zhunti’s actions. She dragged him away to settle the resulting blood debts 5 7 8.

Jieyin remained to fight the Twelve Ancestor Witches’ array. Its Pangu True Body severed his left arm, and he called on Hongjun for help. He later joined Taiqing and Yuanshi against Chen Xuan’s Slaughter True Body, only to be captured and have his Sage Dao Body destroyed. He re-formed it, but suffered damage to his Sage origin and a loss of Western fortune 9 10 36 38 39 40.

The brothers continued to stand with the Profound Gate after Chen Xuan exposed Hongjun’s control over its Sages. Neither followed Tongtian’s example of abandoning Heavenly Dao Sagehood. When the four remaining Profound Gate Sages tried to stop the establishment of reincarnation, Jieyin was trapped in Tongtian’s Immortal Slaying Sword Formation while Zhunti fought Minghe 72 75 89 92 93.

After the Six Sages of Reincarnation emerged, the brothers attempted to flee the Sea of Blood. Minghe wounded Zhunti, while Dijiang bound Jieyin with law chains. Chen Xuan sentenced all four Profound Gate Sages to imprisonment in the Eighteen Levels of Hell for one hundred thousand yuanhui; they later left the Netherworld with Hongjun 97 100 105.

Appearance

• Jieyin — Plump, with a round face; he arrives on the Wu–Demon battlefield surrounded by golden light and an oppressive Buddha-light 5.
• Zhunti — Seen holding the Seven Treasures Wonderful Tree while facing the Ancestor Witches’ array 6.

Abilities & Skills

Heavenly Dao Sagehood

• Both possess Sage power and can use divine abilities to perceive events across time, though neither can see through Houtu after Chen Xuan takes control of her body 5.
• Their entrusted true spirits allow a destroyed Sage Dao Body to be re-formed. Jieyin survives its destruction, but the damage destabilizes his cultivation and harms the West’s fortune 40 63.
• Their Heavenly Dao Sagehood also binds them to the Heavenly Dao and Hongjun; both decline to give it up despite learning of that dependence 72 75.

Western Salvation Technique

• Zhunti uses this technique to lure the Ten Golden Crows out of Tanggu Valley 8.

Sixteen-Foot Golden Body

• Jieyin manifests this combat ability while trying to break Dijiang’s chains, but cannot escape them 100.

• Jieyin: Jieyin’s Treasure Banner and Demon Subduing Divine Pestle 7.
• Jieyin: Green Lotus Treasure Banner, Twelve-Petaled Merit Golden Lotus, and Glazed Pagoda; several of his treasures fall away when the Pangu True Body injures him 9.

Relationships

• Hongjun — Their Dao Ancestor and master. Jieyin calls on him for rescue; Hongjun later binds the Profound Gate Sages to the conflict by decree 10 52.
• Chen Xuan / Houtu — Exposes their role in the Ten Golden Crows incident and repeatedly defeats or injures them 7 9 37 100.
• Nuwa — Traces Zhunti’s actions, confronts him over the deaths they caused, and fights him away from the battlefield 8 10.
• Minghe — Fights Zhunti at the Sea of Blood, then wounds him after attaining Hun Yuan 93 100.
• Tongtian — Traps Jieyin in the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation while aiding the Witch Clan 92.
