Background / History

Jieyin is one of the Two Sages of the West alongside Zhunti. During the Wu–Demon conflict, the pair seeks to break the Twelve Capital Celestial Evil Spirit Array, suppress the Wu clan’s last resistance, and compel Houtu to transform into reincarnation—an outcome they consider beneficial to the West 6.

Houtu, under Chen Xuan’s influence, publicly exposes Jieyin and Zhunti’s involvement in luring the Ten Golden Crows from Tanggu Valley, an act that helped ignite the Wu–Demon war. Jieyin denies the charge and attempts to discredit Houtu, but refuses to trace the River of Time to verify the karma, exposing his fear of the truth 7. Nuwa subsequently confirms Zhunti’s role through her own investigation 8.

After Zhunti is taken away by Nuwa, Jieyin remains trapped against the Wu clan’s array. His attempts to negotiate fail, forcing him into a desperate defense with his lotus, banners, pestle, and numerous spiritual treasures 8. The Pangu True Body overwhelms him, destroys several of his defenses, and severs his left arm 9. Facing further damage to his Sage Dao Fruit and the threat of losing his Sage status, Jieyin calls on Hongjun for rescue 10.

Jieyin escapes while the Dutian God-Demon Array clashes with Hongjun’s Dharma Body, prioritizing survival over remaining in the battle 14. He later returns to join Taiqing and Yuanshi against Chen Xuan’s Slaughter True Body, hoping to share in the eventual rewards from Hongjun; this intervention draws widespread condemnation because three Heavenly Dao Saints are attacking Houtu together 36.

When the Slaughter True Body reaches completion, Jieyin attempts to flee again. Chen Xuan pursues him across vast stretches of void and captures him 38. Chen Xuan publicly tries and crushes Jieyin’s Sage Dao Body, but Jieyin’s Innate Undying True Spirit allows him to reform. The resurrection comes at a cost: his Sage origin is damaged, his Hun Yuan realm becomes unstable, and Western fortune is reduced 39 40.

Jieyin continues fighting alongside Taiqing, Yuanshi, and Taiqing’s three incarnations. By the later stages of the conflict, he is exhausted, his Three Flowers and Sage Dao Fruit near collapse, and he sustains another grave injury when Chen Xuan’s sword light cuts him in half 40 41 46.

After Tongtian abandons the battle, Jieyin remains with Taiqing and Yuanshi under Hongjun’s command. Although he attempts to flee using the Earthbound Leap, Hongjun’s will frightens him into remaining. The Three Light Divine Water subsequently heals the Sages’ damaged Dao Bodies, enabling Jieyin to rejoin the battle against Houtu 52 53.

Following Di Jun’s destruction of the Heavenly Pillar, Jieyin attempts to seize a fragment of Mount Buzhou, claiming that it is fated to the West. Chen Xuan destroys his manifested arm, takes the fragment, and obtains the Eight-Treasure Glazed Bottle amid the struggle 59. Jieyin later learns that the Primordial Purple Qi and Heavenly Dao Sagehood bind him to the Heavenly Dao, but—unlike Tongtian—he cannot bring himself to abandon his Sage Dao Fruit and status 73 75.

When Chen Xuan opens and establishes the Six Paths of Reincarnation, Jieyin continues acting with Taiqing against him. Having been deceived twice by Chen Xuan’s calls for Tongtian, he dismisses a third warning and attacks, only for Tongtian to genuinely appear and grievously wound him 91 92. Tongtian then traps Jieyin and Taiqing within the Immortal-Slaying Formation 92 93.

After the Netherworld is established, Dijiang captures Jieyin with reincarnation chains and seals his sage power. Jieyin and Zhunti are nailed to the Three Poisons Pillars in the Eighteen Levels of Hell, where their Buddha’s Light is eroded by Netherworld death qi 100 101. When he tries to demonstrate loyalty during Hongjun’s negotiations with Chen Xuan, Chen Xuan punishes him directly, forcing him to beg Hongjun to accept her conditions 103. Hongjun ultimately secures the release of Jieyin and the other imprisoned Profound Gate Sages, who leave the Netherworld in disgrace 105.

In the subsequent struggle for Human Clan fortune, Jieyin and Zhunti remain interested in securing Human Sovereigns as disciples to restore Western influence. Jieyin is among the four Profound Gate Sages who contend with Tongtian for Xuanyuan, but Chen Xuan forces them to withdraw and Xuanyuan chooses Tongtian instead 118 119. At later gatherings, Jieyin and Zhunti continue quietly directing Western disciples and seeking opportunities to strengthen the weak Western foundation, while avoiding direct conflict with the now-dominant Witch Clan 123 124.

Appearance

Jieyin is depicted as a Daoist Sage associated with golden lotus light, banners, and a large collection of spiritual treasures. After repeated defeats, he appears in tattered robes, covered in dust and blood 40.

Jieyin is calculating and opportunistic. He participates in schemes intended to benefit the West, seeks to exploit the Wu–Demon calamity, and returns to battle when he expects Hongjun’s rewards to be distributed 6 36.

However, his conduct under pressure is dominated by self-preservation. He attempts negotiation when trapped, abandons Zhunti when Nuwa arrives, repeatedly tries to escape dangerous battles, and calls for aid from Hongjun and his fellow Sages when Chen Xuan overwhelms him 8 10 38 46. His fear of losing his Sage position becomes especially pronounced after the Slaughter True Body damages his origin 10 40.

Jieyin is also deeply attached to the security offered by Heavenly Dao Sagehood. Although he recognizes that Primordial Purple Qi makes the Profound Gate Sages servants of the Heavenly Dao, he cannot emulate Tongtian’s decision to sever his Sage Dao Fruit because he fears the loss of immortality and his future path 73 75. His desire to restore Western fortune continues to guide his actions, including his attempts to compete for Human Clan fortune and organize Western disciples in secret 109 118 123.

Continued Decline

Forced back into battle by Taiqing, Jieyin fights alongside the other Sages despite his damaged origin. He becomes increasingly exhausted and is later cut in half by Chen Xuan’s sword light 40 41 46.

Recovery and the Mount Buzhou Dispute

After being compelled to remain on the battlefield, Jieyin’s Dao Body is restored with the Three Light Divine Water 52. He subsequently covets a fragment of collapsed Mount Buzhou, but Chen Xuan destroys his arm and claims both the fragment and related treasures 59.

Reincarnation and Immortal-Slaying Formation

Jieyin joins Taiqing in attempting to stop Chen Xuan from establishing reincarnation. His refusal to believe another warning concerning Tongtian leads directly to Tongtian’s ambush, severe injury, and Jieyin’s imprisonment within the Immortal-Slaying Formation 91 92.

Netherworld Imprisonment

Following the rise of the Six Reincarnation Sages, Dijiang captures Jieyin and seals his power. Jieyin and Zhunti endure punishment upon the Three Poisons Pillars in the Eighteen Levels of Hell until Hongjun compromises with Chen Xuan and secures their release 100 101 103 105.

Struggle for Human Clan Fortune

Jieyin later seeks to restore Western influence through the Human Clan’s fortune. He competes for Xuanyuan as a disciple alongside the other Profound Gate Sages, but Chen Xuan intervenes and Xuanyuan selects Tongtian instead 118 119.
