Background / History
Childhood and Treatment
Messmer is introduced as a frail, withdrawn boy whose body is burdened by an internal serpent. Marika’s sealing Grace confines it without changing its essence, while the Erdtree’s power rejects it. Horace senses a primordial evil associated with devouring but admits that he cannot remove something rooted so deeply in Messmer’s existence 50.
At Marika’s request, Horace applies several Great Runes to restrain the serpent. Messmer endures the painful process without crying out and afterward can raise his arms and stand much straighter. The treatment gives him relief rather than a cure 50.
Messmer and Melina subsequently leave Leyndell with Horace. To conceal their departure, Horace puts Messmer in a maid’s dress and passes him off as a mute servant. Messmer is mortified; Melina later reveals that their mother and uncle arranged the departure together 52 55.
Judicial Work in Caria
Horace recognizes Messmer’s sensitivity to rules and plans to train him through increasingly complicated judicial cases. Public curiosity about the handsome red-haired boy makes Messmer reluctant to venture beyond the judicial office and his lodgings 54 55.
His encounter with Gaius exposes the limits of a purely prohibitive approach. Messmer tries to stop a painful Formless Mother ritual whose blessing briefly allows Albinaurics to stand or walk but can worsen their condition. Gaius attacks him to defend the hope the ritual offers 58.
The two later become close allies. When Gaius breaks the law, Messmer struggles between protecting his friend and respecting Horace’s judicial system. Miriel proposes that Gaius investigate Albinauric kidnappings while serving his sentence, with Messmer paying the fine. Melina supplies the money after Messmer’s doll collecting has depleted his funds 85 86.
War and Administration
During Stormveil’s invasion, Messmer breaks through the eastern army and kills its commander, Reynard, in three moves. He nevertheless assumes Reynard must have been unusually weak: his previous defeats against an Ancient Dragon, Godwyn, and Godfrey have left him with little understanding of his own strength 127.
He still has practical battlefield limitations. Stormveil veterans later surround and force him back until Gaius intervenes. His Fire Knights are then inexperienced noble recruits whose political importance exceeds their fighting ability 130.
Horace eventually entrusts Limgrave’s administration to him. Marika later summons him to Leyndell, where he secretly receives reports from the Black Knights while preparing for a campaign against the Hornsent 136 163.
Campaign in the Land of Shadow
Horace objects to making Messmer bear the infamy of the anti-Hornsent holy war. He assigns Godfrey to lead the slaughter and declares that he will take responsibility himself, although Messmer continues participating in the campaign 164 166 189.
Messmer’s flames devastate the land, destroying both surface growth and Scarlet Rot. His Fire Knights are transformed by combat and reinforcements into disciplined, lethal troops. During the campaign, Messmer accepts the Fell God’s burning kindling—the pact later identified as the source of his Empyrean transformation 188 189 263.
Angelic Service and the Holy Grail War
Horace sends Messmer to burn a corrupt Temple in an ancient Holy City while sparing those at prayer. Messmer discovers that he is acting through a spiritual body and that an outside being is authorizing his judgment. The resulting legend establishes him as an angel within that world 203 204 207.
Summoned by Sakura as Berserker, he rescues her from Zouken Matou and burns the worm pit. He then pursues the Holy Grail War pragmatically, ambushing Proto Saber and impaling Irisviel rather than adhering to knightly conduct. Avalon begins healing Irisviel after he withdraws 216 229.
His attempt to kill Kirei Kotomine is stopped by King Hassan. Messmer and Horace subsequently investigate Dove’s purpose, suspecting that the war is intended to make humanity confront its dependence on faith. Burning Angra Mainyu’s black mud later amplifies Messmer’s power and helps activate an angel-targeting summoning ritual 238 240.
Sakura uses Command Spells to make him stop and awaken during the confrontation with the Beast of Sodom. Messmer later considers his secret contract with Dove fulfilled: he had agreed to act as an angelic examiner in exchange for the Seraphim’s power. Having become an Empyrean, he now intends to contend for the Elden Ring 255 263.
Proto Saber eliminates his Servant manifestation with Excalibur, but Messmer returns alive to the Lands Between. Horace asks him to disclose dangerous divine dealings in advance—not to surrender his independence. Messmer’s belief that his risks should burden nobody else leaves Horace more concerned about his self-loathing than his disobedience 264.
Appearance
At his introduction, Messmer has a slender frame, short flame-red hair, and a severely bowed posture. Great Rune treatment reduces the pressure on his body, though he initially remains somewhat stiff 50 51.
- Right eye: Replaced by Marika’s sealing Grace, visible as a faint golden glimmer 50.
- Early clothing: Wears a dark casual outfit of good fabric after treatment 51.
- Servant manifestation: Has long red hair, golden eyes, black armor, a cloak, and two small snakes around his shoulders. His voice retains a low, metallic rasp despite the female body 216 229.
- Power amplification: His black armor develops golden patterns while he burns Angra Mainyu’s mud 240.
- “If” transformations: Develops one pair of enormous fiery wings at Mt. Gelmir and three pairs at the Mountaintops 358 359.
Personality
Messmer is shy, restrained, and easily embarrassed. He frequently lowers his head or struggles to speak when anxious. Horace considers him simple-hearted and naturally responsive to rules, qualities that suit judicial work but make conflicts between personal loyalty and legal duty particularly painful 54 55 81 85.
His reserve conceals considerable tenderness. He comforts Melina over their separation from Leyndell, welcomes the companionship of two Winged Serpents, and offers Sakura a patient helping hand before shielding her from Zouken 88 116 216.
He is not, however, an uncompromising champion of fair play. As a Servant, he accepts ambushes, attacks on apparent Masters, and the possible use of poison. He wants to finish the war quickly and escape a manifestation he finds humiliating 229.
His deepest vulnerability is his conviction that he is fundamentally cursed. He interprets kinship with snakes as evidence that he is merely a serpent wearing human skin, and later imagines that nobody would care if he disappeared. Horace explicitly distinguishes these beliefs from reality: Messmer has people who love him, but fails to recognize how his self-endangerment hurts them 117 264.
His protectiveness toward Melina can become controlling. In the “If” storyline, he prioritizes her survival over her wishes and ultimately attempts to overturn the sacrificial order that threatens her 356 358 360.
Abilities & Skills
Messmer’s Flame and Spearmanship
Messmer combines scarlet fire with rapid spear attacks, sweeping strikes, and mass impalement techniques 22 127.
- Erupts numerous spears from the ground to skewer surrounding soldiers 127.
- Spreads flame in a fan with a spear sweep and channels it through an impaled target 127.
- Incinerates Kindred of Rot with a ring of fire 121.
- Burns the Land of Shadow so thoroughly that neither abundance nor Scarlet Rot remains on its surface 188.
- Can be pressured by coordinated, experienced opponents despite his individual strength 130.
Serpent Essence and Winged Serpents
The serpent is part of Messmer’s underlying existence rather than an ordinary external possession. Neither Marika’s Grace nor Horace’s Great Runes initially removes it 50.
- Retains an instinctive affinity with serpents and understands their hissing as language 116 117.
- Attracts two Winged Serpents, which identify him as their own kind and remain with him 116 117.
- His Servant profile lists the essence as sealed and “purified,” although Messmer still regards himself as cursed 216.
- The Fell God’s bargain provides a path involving the serpent essence as a sacrifice 189.
Angelic Judgment
As an angel, Messmer can perceive sin and burn it for magical energy. His Servant abilities are shaped by the legend of the Holy City’s destruction 204 216.
- Identifies Zouken as a worm-filled vessel surrounding a twisted, sinful soul 216.
- Can assign the attribute of evil: he declares Proto Saber’s armor guilty of sheltering evildoers and sets it alight 229.
- Burns magical defenses, including armor and Mana Burst; Excalibur’s special material resists his flame 229.
- Can designate faith itself as evil within a church, confirming that his authority is not limited to conventional moral categories 238.
- Excessive sin-derived energy can compromise his control and empower external rituals 240.

Noble Phantasms
Pseudo-Destructio Sodomae
- Recreates the legend of Messmer burning the Holy City as an angel 216.
- Summons heavenly fire against sins within its range; greater sin produces greater damage, while the innocent are unaffected 216.
- Dyes the sky red like an apocalypse. Distortion of the original legend has reduced its power 216.
O Serpent of Burning, Reveal Salvation — Seraphim Brazen
- Releases Messmer’s essence as a Serpent of Flame and allows his true form to descend by tearing apart the Apocrypha 216.
- Manifests an angelic judgment that burns those who fail, proclaims Judgment Day, and encroaches upon reality 216.
Judicial and Administrative Skills
- Handles judicial duties under Horace and understands the conflict between lawful punishment and personal favoritism 55 85 86.
- Receives responsibility for follow-up tax audits of East Lake District families that have not donated books 110.
- Administers Limgrave on Horace’s behalf 136.
- Commands Fire Knights during the Hornsent campaign and secretly receives reports from the Black Knights before its launch 163 188 189.
Equipment / Companions
- Spear — His principal weapon, used to channel flame and execute enemies by impalement. Its “If” version bears a carved serpent 127 189 356 360.
- Sealing Grace — Marika’s replacement for his right eye, intended to confine the serpent 50.
- Great Rune restraints and blessing — Horace’s protective rules suppress the serpent; his Servant profile also credits Horace with attribute enhancement and curse resistance 50 216.
- Two Winged Serpents — Companions attracted by his serpent nature. In the “If” battle, they assist with close-range attacks and crowd control 116 117 358.
- Melina Doll collection — Includes an expensive collector’s original edition and numerous dolls purchased from Sellen. Collecting them substantially drains his judicial salary 81 86 212.
Relationships
- Horace Loux / Hesa — Uncle, guardian, superior, and benefactor. Treats his condition, trains him for judicial work, and supports his independence while challenging his dangerous secrecy 50 55 264.
- Marika — Mother. Seals his serpent, seeks treatment for him, and arranges his departure to Caria. Later intends to send him against the Hornsent; Horace believes her early parenting contributed to his low self-worth 50 55 163 264.
- Godfrey / Hoarah Loux — Introduced as his father. Shows concern during treatment, though initially appears emotionally distant; also numbers among the powerful opponents against whom Messmer has repeatedly lost 50 127.
- Melina — Younger sister and the focus of his strongest protective attachment. He comforts her, collects her dolls, and fiercely opposes alterations he considers degrading to her image 81 88.
- Godwyn — Brother and overwhelming sparring opponent. Messmer restrains his flame against him and loses to an Earthshaker 77.
- Gaius — Initially an opponent over the Albinauric ritual, later a trusted friend and battlefield ally. Messmer seeks leniency for him without openly abandoning judicial principles 58 85 86 130.
- Fell God of Fire — Divine benefactor whose pact makes Messmer an Empyrean. Messmer reluctantly pays damages from his wages out of gratitude 189 199 263.
- Dove — Source of his angelic authority and contractual patron. Promises the Seraphim’s power in return for his participation as an examiner 238 263.
- Sakura Matou — Master during the Holy Grail War. Messmer rescues and protects her; she later uses Command Spells to stop and awaken him 216 255.
- Miquella — Younger sibling whose writings distort Messmer’s manifested image. Miquella openly takes credit for designing the appearance, provoking Messmer to attack him 216 259.
- Sellen — Supplier of Melina Dolls and a persistent source of financial frustration. His willingness to buy gives her considerable leverage over him 203 212 356.
“If” Storyline
Protecting Melina at Mt. Gelmir
Miquella tells the player that Messmer has kidnapped Melina. At Mt. Gelmir, Messmer refuses to let the Tarnished take her away. Sellen explains that he fears the prophecy requiring the kindling maiden to give her life for the king and values Melina’s safety above her wishes 353 356.
| Encounter element | Details |
|---|---|
| First phase | Fights as “The Impaler” Messmer, using spear throws, ground-erupting stakes, scarlet flames, and his Winged Serpents 356 358. |
| Second phase | Becomes “Present-Day Fire God” Belphegor, gaining fiery wings, tornadoes, magma-covered terrain, and fireball-based movement 358. |
| Allies against him | The player fights with Yhorm, Vyke, and the Mimic Tear 358. |
| Key counter | The Serpent-Skin Fire Shield, made from gathered shed skins, absorbs flame and can counter his fireball attacks 357 358. |
| Outcome | Leaves behind his remembrance and red glintstone, then flies toward the Mountaintops along a road of fire 358. |
Attempt to Burn the Old Order
At the Mountaintops, Messmer slaughters Giants and Flame Guardians near the blazing forge. He fights as the World-Burning Seraphim alongside the Fell God, then takes the god’s power and Authority to become the Serpent of Fire bearing Raphael’s name 359.
That seizure also gives him the Fell God’s Divine Essence—and its vulnerability. When Yhorm embraces the forge and suppresses its flame, Messmer’s wings weaken, forcing him to fight on the ground. The player ultimately extinguishes his fire 360.
In his final moments, Messmer understands that the prophecy’s paired ashes refer to two Tarnished rather than himself and Melina. He nevertheless throws his spear at the Erdtree, igniting it and taking the sin of its destruction upon himself. His crystallized will becomes Messmer’s Ideology Runes, an item required to reach the final battle and become Elden Lord 360.
- Ideology Runes effects: Greatly increase intelligence, faith, and fire damage when activated 360.
- Later appearance: Messmer appears briefly during the player’s dream-bound sequence, then vanishes and leaves a flame that kills the player when touched 365.
- Lasting consequence: His fire remains on the Erdtree as the player approaches the final confrontation 367.
