Background and History

Birth and Eternal Childhood

Miquella and Malenia originated from Divine Blood taken from Marika and sealed inside a jar. Its isolation produced stagnation, which invited rot. When Rot used the blood to create incarnations, Horace expelled its consciousness and split the already-living shell into two children 122 123.

Horace introduced himself as their uncle and brought them to the Church of Vows. Lilith explained that Malenia had inherited the accumulated rot, while Miquella’s growth had become permanently stagnant. She proposed freeing Rot to restore circulation and cure both children, but Horace refused to risk releasing an Outer God upon the world 123.

The twins subsequently lived under Horace’s care in Caria. While observing Miquella, Lilith discovered a female presence within him: Trina, his other half 124 126.

Writing and Supervision

Horace discovered that Miquella was writing detailed, scandalous fiction about the people around him. His charm also allowed him to have others do his work, prompting Horace to appoint Godwyn as a supervisor considered immune to that influence 161 162.

Godwyn enlisted Lansseax’s help, but Miquella instead used the ancient-dragon information he learned to produce a sensational account of Bayle’s rebellion against the Dragon Lord 162.

After watching Radahn care for a frightened horse, Miquella recast ordinary feeding, patience, and reassurance as material for a coercive romance. His resulting novel, The Red-Haired Knight and His Beloved Horse—A Forbidden Love Beyond Species, eventually circulated widely throughout the Lands Between 208 209.

The Dream Experiment

After Shirou’s final Command Spell seemingly failed to summon him, Miquella appeared and explicitly stated that the spell had not worked. He introduced himself as someone Shirou could call a saint 257 258.

Miquella then tested his answer to Dove’s trial: a world of dreams reflecting each sleeper’s deepest desires. He argued that even a few people awakening could begin a change that others would carry forward 259.

He deliberately provoked Messmer, who impaled and burned him. Miquella sent that firelight into the dreams, using fear to force people out of otherwise irresistible fantasies. As the trial ended, he dissolved into golden motes and transferred his Noble Phantasm to Messmer 259 263.

Interference at the Moonlight Altar

While fleeing Messmer, Miquella reached the Moonlight Altar and witnessed the Two Fingers choosing Ranni as an Empyrean. Concealing himself with Unseen Form, he combined charm with sleep mist to influence the shaping of her Shadow Beast 287.

The result was Blaidd: a half-human, half-wolf being with a husky-like head. Miquella concealed his interference from Trina by putting her to sleep 287 288.

Godwyn’s Contest and Horace’s Restraint

Miquella impersonated Godwyn to occupy Horace while the real prince pursued the Elden Ring. He pointed out that Horace’s rules had never specified when the Thousand-Year Contest must begin, allowing the brothers to declare it already underway 317.

During Godwyn’s confrontation with the Elden Beast, Miquella released Destined Death before Godwyn could call for it. He regarded the unfolding conflict as a source of variables that might bring him his desired king 319 320.

His subsequent attempt to charm Horace failed against Horace’s Great Rune. Horace exposed the limitations of Miquella’s Dreamscape predictions, warned him away from Hötter’s power, and forbade him from acting in reality until the next millennium. Trina remained free 323.

Miquella continued working within the Dreamscape, constructing “Adam of the Mind” and cooperating with Rykard on the Chapel of Anticipation. Trina’s departure disrupted his ritual, but he still hoped she would bring the king to him 323.

Appearance

Miquella has a child’s body, golden hair, delicate features, and an outwardly gentle, saintly expression 123 126 208.

  • Hair: Initially described as shoulder-length; later appearances feature long, loose golden hair 126 317.
  • Build: Slender, with pale, fine hands 151 353.
  • Adornment: Wears a laurel crown when appearing before Radagon in the player-perspective storyline 352.
  • Lasting scar: Trina’s withering leaves an unhealable purple stain on his right cheek 365.

Personality

Miquella combines a reassuring exterior with a mischievous and frequently manipulative disposition. He uses a saintly smile when approaching Radahn for writing material and treats the discomfort of his subjects as an acceptable artistic sacrifice. When Trina warns that Radahn will retaliate, Miquella confidently invokes charm as a way to secure forgiveness 208 209.

His fascination with “love” extends to predation, captivity, and conditioning. Trina repeatedly challenges these interpretations, while Marika finds his scandalous imagination entertaining 208 209.

As a planner, Miquella deliberately introduces variables into events and treats relationships as parts of a larger king-making design. His confidence rests heavily on Dreamscape simulations; Horace’s resistance shocks him because it contradicts the futures he had repeatedly projected 287 319 323.

In the player-perspective storyline, his stated goal is universal dignity and happiness through an eternal dream. His opponents condemn the lack of consent: Miquella intends to decide reality for others while offering neither genuine choice nor the means to become independent of his protection 364.

Abilities and Skills

Charm

Miquella possesses innate power over others’ perceptions and inclinations 2 287.

  • Persuades others to perform his work, complicating attempts to supervise him 162.
  • Subtly guides the Two Fingers while sleep mist clouds their awareness 287.
  • Alters Horace’s senses sufficiently to impersonate Godwyn without triggering his Great Runes 317 323.
  • Cannot successfully charm Horace through his vow that his will shall never waver 323.
  • In the player-perspective storyline, Ansbach breaks free by inflicting pain on himself 362.

Dreamscape Construction and Projection

Miquella constructs dreams, models possible futures, and connects lives through the Dreamscape. Sleep and dream power are also explicitly associated with Trina 259 287 323.

  • Gives sleepers individualized worlds shaped by their deepest desires 259.
  • Uses fear and burning dream imagery to force awakening 259.
  • Continues thinking, projecting, and designing rituals while physically restrained 323.
  • Cannot guarantee accurate predictions when resistance or unexpected variables overturn his assumptions 323 365.

Scarlet Rot and Abundance

In the player-perspective storyline, Miquella and Malenia develop a Dreamscape that converts Scarlet Rot into grain for the Lands Between 363.

  • Miquella deliberately expands Scarlet Rot’s essence beyond their original achievement 363.
  • Plans to exploit endlessly proliferating rot, especially the corruption produced by human society, as the power source for his creation 362.
  • Requires a vessel; Malenia identifies the Tarnished as his intended vessel and Millicent as a spare 362.

Adam

Adam is Miquella’s giant manifestation in the player-perspective confrontation at the Elden Throne 364.

  • Controls familiar figures through threads.
  • Attempts assimilation rather than simple destruction, drawing the Tarnished toward his dream.
  • Disintegrates after the player defeats its puppets and the giant itself 364.

Writing and Strategy

Miquella applies his talent for storytelling to both fiction and elaborate political schemes 162 209 317.

  • Turns private interactions and ancient-dragon history into sensational fiction 162 208 209.
  • Recognizes loopholes in the Thousand-Year Contest’s rules 317.
  • Coordinates impersonation, prophecy, and Dreamscape projections to seek a king 317 323.

  • Miquella’s Master Key — A golden key associated with his secret treasure. In the player-perspective storyline, copies open the chest holding Ranni’s Dark Moon Ring and a chest in Malenia’s dream 311 313 329 361.
  • Round Table — An ornate, apparently ordinary table obtained during the player’s journey through Malenia’s dream. Its description presents possession of the table and its heroes as an attribute of the King of Heroes 361.
  • Miquella’s Ideology Runes — The crystallized will of Miquella and those enthralled by the Dreamscape. Grants access to the final battle, increases Faith and incantation power, and reduces incantation costs 366.

  • Godwyn — Older brother, appointed supervisor, and later co-conspirator in exploiting the Thousand-Year Contest’s rules 162 317.
  • Marika — Mother. Secretly follows his search for inspiration and enthusiastically appreciates his scandalous writing 123 208 209.
  • Mohg — Seeks marriage to Miquella for both attraction and political advantage. In the player-perspective storyline, Ansbach accuses Miquella of having charmed him 136 137 299.
  • Radahn — Younger brother in this version of events and the unwitting inspiration for Miquella’s forbidden-romance novel 208 209.
  • Messmer — Older sibling who repeatedly seeks revenge against him. Miquella deliberately provokes Messmer during the dream trial 216 259 287.
  • Ranni — Younger sister whose Shadow Beast he secretly alters. In the player-perspective storyline, he also engineers a prospective marriage without respecting her wishes 287 336.
  • Leda — Fanatically loyal follower who attacks the Tarnished for disobeying Miquella 267 335.
  • Ansbach — Adversary who escapes his charm, destroys his Trina disguise, and denounces his paradise as tyranny 362 363 364.

Player-Perspective Storyline

Preparing a Lord

Miquella establishes the new Roundtable Hold, but other inhabitants regard him with suspicion. D calls him the most dangerous Empyrean, while Gideon avoids discussing either him or Trina 297 299.

He sends the Tarnished to Farum Azula for a trial before attaining eternity. Trina asks the player to raise a storm against him, while Hecate explains that Miquella and Trina are simultaneously one god and two people 316.

His preparations include access to Ranni’s Dark Moon Ring and an intended forced bond between her and the Tarnished. Miriel explicitly warns that Miquella does not intend to respect Ranni’s wishes 313 336.

Exposure of the Paradise Plan

Miquella later impersonates Trina to guide the Tarnished toward Malenia. During that confrontation, Malenia reveals that his promised kingship conceals the Tarnished’s intended role as a vessel for a creation powered by humanity’s corruption. Ansbach escapes his charm and tears apart the disguised figure 361 362.

At the Elden Throne, Miquella offers an eternal dream of kindness and happiness while reserving the shaping of reality for himself. Ansbach and Tracker reject the proposal as coercion. Miquella manifests Adam, but its defeat returns the player to Farum Azula, where earlier conversations repeat 364.

Breaking the Dream

Trina leaves a flaw in Miquella’s supposedly perfect dream through her own withering. Her former Withered Lotus Heart becomes Hatred Until Death, a relic affirming her final ownership of herself 365.

Using it shatters the dream and brings the Tarnished before the real Miquella. The loss of his other half leaves a permanent purple scar and finally breaks his assured composure 365.

The subsequent revelation places his schemes within a wider effort to replace divine powers. Miquella and Malenia had already unknowingly replaced Scarlet Rot and Abundance; Miquella’s Ideology Runes then become available to the player 366.
