Background / History
Tribal strategist
Horace possesses memories of a previous life, including modern science and knowledge of the Lands Between as a game. His attempts to apply that knowledge are limited by the setting’s different natural laws; even basic technological development requires experimentation rather than straightforward reproduction 46 78 89.
Within Hoarah Loux’s tribe, he serves as a strategist rather than simply another frontline warrior. Hoarah calls him the tribe’s cleverest person, while Horace argues that their survival requires intelligence gathering, alliances, and warriors capable of disciplined, complex operations 3 4.
He leads Cole, Layla, Finn, and Notte to Belurat to seek Hornsent cooperation. After the priests reject the proposal and a hostile crowd attacks, Horace draws pursuers away from his companions and becomes trapped. Maliketh intervenes, allowing him to escape with intelligence about divisions among the Hornsent 6.
Lakeside Town and Carian service
After reaching Liurnia, Horace develops the Eastern Tableland into Lakeside Town. He combines tribal construction, Carian craftsmanship, and academy technology, while sending magically talented youths to study as the future core of the Order of the Great Rune Knights 34.
The town’s growth makes him valuable—and potentially threatening—to both Caria and the academy. His control of northern trade routes, armed forces, and access to sorcerous knowledge prompts tighter academy restrictions and closer attention from Rennala 35.
Rennala grants him the rank of marquess. Horace subsequently negotiates extensive authority over his troops, taxation, civil administration, courts, and local legislation. His legal system is later adopted throughout Caria, and he becomes the kingdom’s highest Judicial Officer 38 39 40 46.
His rivalry with Rellana develops into companionship over several years. After proposing at the Church of Vows, he exchanges rings with her and marries her, becoming Rennala’s brother-in-law. By the wedding celebrations, he holds the rank of duke 34 68 69 78 79.
Reform and expanding responsibilities
Horace turns his knights into a force responsible for patrols, dispute resolution, and arrests as well as border defense. He funds a nonlethal adaptation of the Life-Taking Fist so that ordinary public-order incidents need not be handled with lethal techniques 46.
He also challenges the nobility’s monopoly on knowledge. Confiscated books supply teaching materials for new schools, allowing commoners’ children to receive formal education. The resulting generation of common-born clerks eventually reduces his administrative burden 78 110 161.
As Caria’s regent, he oversees both the kingdom and Limgrave, where Messmer handles much of the direct administration. His workload expands again when Marika and Godfrey leave for the Land of Shadow: despite refusing the position, he discovers that Radagon has already placed his name on the edict appointing him Chancellor 161 180.
Stormveil campaign
Against the Storm King, Horace prepares overlapping ranged attacks rather than accepting single combat. His arrangements include greatbow golems, sorcerers using Loretta’s Greatbow, and Albinauric archers 127 128.
Lilith’s interference drives enemy soldiers into Bloodflame Frenzy. Horace restrains her, orders his army’s withdrawal, and uses time restraint to pierce the Storm King’s heart. He and Rellana then combine the Blood Moon, Full Moon, and Dark Moon in a three-moon strike 130 131.
For the final exchange, Horace refrains from suppressing the wounded king with his authority, although he retains a defensive barrier. He kills the Storm King with his twin swords, allowing him to die fighting 132.
Godhood and the Thousand-Year Contest
Horace’s pursuit of sufficient spiritual power leads him to support the continued crusade against the Hornsent. He explicitly regards their accumulated souls as an energy source, and later uses the Blood Moon to consume those of the dead while filtering out their curses and emotional residue 164 166 189.
After completing his godhood, he refuses to seize the Elden Ring. Instead, he inscribes a rule requiring its Law to change every thousand years and establishes Radagon as its permanent vessel and chief examiner. He then wakes Godfrey and sets out with him to confront Metyr 191 193.
His system later faces an unforeseen loophole: Miquella impersonates Godwyn to distract him while the real Godwyn enters the Thousand-Year Contest. Horace acknowledges that his rules never specified when the contest must begin, accepts their success for that round, and warns that Radagon may not be its only examiner 317.
Hötter and the journey beyond the Lands Between
Hötter’s immense soul and frail body become a central concern for Horace. He helps her manifest a silvery-white moon to carry part of her soul, adapting the method he uses for his own excess spirituality, but a single moon provides only limited relief 201.
Seeking further help, he accepts Dove’s mission in the Nasuverse and chooses Messmer as his accompanying angel. During the Holy Grail War, Horace concludes that Dove’s objective concerns faith itself and that obtaining the Third Magic may depend on understanding that objective rather than merely winning 202 238.
After Messmer is eliminated by Proto Saber’s Excalibur, Horace confronts him about a secret contract with Dove. His concern shifts from the immediate danger to Messmer’s belief that his own suffering and disappearance would not matter to anyone 264.
Appearance
- Facial features: Sharply defined face and deep-set eyes, with a rugged bearing that becomes more composed through years of leadership 35 41.
- Original hair: Black, later streaked with dark red at the temples as the Formless Mother’s influence becomes visible 41.
- Later hair: Long, silvery-white hair threaded with blood-red highlights after the Blood Moon manifests physically 96.
- Eyes: Change to blood-red, then settle into a darker red with an internal glow 41 96.
- Clothing: Wears practical dark noble attire, a cloak bearing Caria’s crest, and paired swords when traveling as a dignitary 47.
Personality
Horace is pragmatic, calculating, and concerned with survival over martial prestige. He plans around enemy weaknesses, reserves powerful techniques as contingencies, and rejects the idea that warfare should follow the rules of a knightly tournament 9 127 128 131.
His stated goal is to survive alongside his followers and improve their lives. Rellana observes his fairness toward tribespeople, consideration for ordinary townsfolk, and respectful treatment of rescued shamans. His educational and judicial reforms likewise seek to weaken inherited privilege and create functioning institutions 34 35 46 110.
That protectiveness coexists with considerable ruthlessness. He favors confiscating obstructive nobles’ estates and openly endorses retaliation against the Hornsent. Their persecution of the shamans makes him dismiss objections to revenge, while his own need for spiritual power gives him an additional reason to support the crusade 78 164 166.
He remains wary of divine generosity, even when accepting its benefits. Nevertheless, curiosity and the desire for power can overcome his caution, as demonstrated by his acceptance of the Formless Mother’s divine blood 83 84.
With family, he is affectionate, teasing, and frequently exasperated. He understands Godfrey well enough to redirect his frustration toward a fight, but treats Messmer’s self-loathing as a problem that cannot be solved by strength alone 79 158 264.
Abilities & Skills
Great Runes and the Law of Restraint
Horace’s signature power exchanges limitations for enhancements and eventually extends to imposing restrictions on other beings and the surrounding world 4 9 130.
- Self-enhancement: Adjusts combat attributes through commandments such as restrictions on heavy weapons and Precision strike 9.
- Early cost: Activating more than ten Great Runes simultaneously causes extreme pain and a crushing burden on his soul 10.
- Sealing: Suppresses Messmer’s inner serpent and eases its physical pressure, but cannot eradicate its essential presence 50.
- Conditional transformation: Removes Morgott and Mohg’s Omen aspects under a bond forbidding them from harming each other; the horns will return if the condition is broken 137.
- Binding: Uses golden chains to restrain Lilith and imposes Great Runes on Borealis’s soul to claim the dragon 131 153.
- Environmental prohibition: Declares that flight is forbidden during the battle against Stormveil 130.
- Underlying nature: Discovers that the Great Runes also restrain himself, preventing an unrestricted state of omniscience 192.
Blood Moon
A self-created moon originating within Horace’s consciousness rather than an imitation of a celestial moon 66.
- Corruption management: Absorbs and incorporates the Formless Mother’s influence into a system he can manage; the connection remains intact 66 82.
- Soul capacity: Holds excess spirituality and shares the weight of his soul 201.
- Spiritual processing: Converts dead souls into usable power while bearing their curses and negative emotions itself 189.
- Time restraint: Supports the Great Rune application that slows the battlefield around the Storm King 131.
- Combined attack: Descends alongside Rellana’s Full Moon and Dark Moon 131.
Restraint Incantations
Horace creates Oath, Chains, and Punishment as the foundations of an incantation system based on his Law. Their initial forms have considerable costs, but possess a suppressive effect against other Laws 109.
- Oath: Strengthens its user through sincere commitment; Uriel demonstrates that even an earnest promise to finish paperwork can produce a powerful combat enhancement 109.
- Chains: Provides restraint and battlefield control. Knights discover a variation that briefly binds mounted enemies like reins 109.
- Punishment: Creates sigils that can resonate and explode when repeatedly placed over the same area 109.
- Research limitation: Despite his sorcerous talent, Horace spends three months producing only these three prototypes. His knights subsequently develop applications he had not anticipated 109.
Dragon Communion and Flame Lightning
Dragon Communion strengthens Horace’s body and plants the potential for Bayle-like Flame Lightning within him 12.
- Initially produces only a faint orange spark 12.
- Later uses Bayle’s Tyranny to defeat Rellana 23.
- Recognizes that long incantation windups can become lethal openings against comparable opponents 23.
- Froesanks describes eventual draconic transformation through the Crucible as possible once he becomes a true king; this is guidance about a future capability, not a transformation demonstrated during the ritual 12.
Sorcery and Swordsmanship
Horace combines paired-blade combat with glintstone sorcery, lunar research, and techniques learned from others 23 34 40.
- Trains with light twinblades for years and uses poisoned throwing knives against vulnerable targets 9.
- Interrupts Rellana’s sorcery with a glintstone strike 23.
- Receives Lusat’s previously untaught Ruinous Stars scroll 34.
- Studies swordsmanship and True Magic with Rellana 40.
- Receives an imitation Flowing Water Sword and instruction in a Nox sword art developed to counter rot 61 66.
Gate of Myriad Laws
A presence within Horace’s soul that supplies advice, answers, and warnings 84 85.
- Warns him that the Moon’s plans threaten people close to him and advises accepting the divine blood and informing the Formless Mother 84.
- Gives practical instructions, including taking the sealed blood to the Church of Vows 85.
- Receives spiritual resources that Horace might otherwise absorb himself, contributing to his prolonged lack of spiritual quantity 166 171.
- Is associated with his later realization that the Great Runes restrain an already-present capacity for omniscience 192.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Twinblades and paired swords — His principal melee weapons; early selections accommodate his prohibition against heavy weapons 9 47.
- Poisoned throwing knives — Used to target Senessax’s eyes and mouth 9.
- Dragon-grease-coated longswords — Wielded while simultaneously activating numerous Great Runes against Bayle 10.
- Nokstella’s Moon — Talisman given by a Night Witch. Improves comprehension and inspiration rather than directly increasing power; its edges become red during his Blood Moon research 64 66.
- Imitation Flowing Water Sword — Nox-made weapon intended to assist against creatures of rot 61.
- Fingerslayer Blade — Obtained in Nokron as part of his preparations against the Fingers 167 170.

- Rellana — Wife, swordsmanship and sorcery instructor, and battle partner. Their relationship grows from an antagonistic duel into years of companionship and marriage 23 34 40 69 79.
- Hötter — Daughter. Her dangerous soul–body imbalance drives his search for remedies beyond the Lands Between 201 202.
- Rennala — Sovereign and sister-in-law. Grants his noble rank, adopts his legal reforms, and helps bring him and Rellana together 38 46 69 78.
- Marika — Godfrey’s consort and Horace’s political counterpart. Entrusts Messmer’s treatment to him and later leaves him responsible for government affairs 50 180.
- Messmer — Nephew, ward, and protégé. Horace suppresses his serpent, guides his legal training, and worries about his deeply rooted self-loathing 50 51 72 264.
- Godwyn — Nephew. Trusts Horace to shelter Morgott and Mohg, then later helps exploit a loophole in the Thousand-Year Contest 75 107 317.
- Morgott and Mohg — Nephews sheltered and trained under his protection. He conditionally removes their Omen aspects and directs their education 107 137.
- Uriel — Trusted warrior and administrator who handles much of Lakeside Town’s daily work and advances Horace’s incantation research 46 102 109.
- Formless Mother / Lilith — Divine patron whose influence he both uses and restrains. Horace creates her surface avatar, but must also contain her interference in warfare 66 112 131.
- Miriel — Early benefactor, confidant, and matchmaker. Provides the couple’s rings and helps arrange their wedding at the Church of Vows 67 68 69.
- Froesanks — Dragon priestess who conducts his Dragon Communion and explains the relationship between kingship, the Crucible, and transformation 12.
- Lusat — Sorcery teacher who entrusts him with Ruinous Stars 34.
- Radagon — Made permanent vessel of the Elden Ring and chief examiner under Horace’s succession system; previously arranges his unwanted appointment as Chancellor 180 193.
- Golden peacock — Embodiment of his Great Runes, simultaneously his enemy and other self. Horace later attempts to share his administrative work with it 193 197.
- Dove — Offers a mission in exchange for help with Hötter. Horace grows suspicious of the deeper purpose behind Dove’s instructions 202 238.
“If” Player Battle
Horace and Rellana appear as a joint encounter in the “If” chapters. The battle expresses his authority through restrictions on the player’s equipment, abilities, movement, and controls 368 369.
| Mechanic | Effect |
|---|---|
| Great Rune restrictions | Lock items and shortcuts; later disable the Ash of War button 368 369. |
| Blood Moon | Remains overhead for ten seconds, reduces healing from flasks and incantations by more than half, and randomly locks half the player’s sorceries and incantations 368. |
| Divine Grace Barrier | Follows the Blood Moon’s descent, covering half the platform and restricting movement 368. |
| Input suppression | Randomly disables a functional input, including jumping, rolling, or even mouse control 368. |
| Partner withdrawal | Rellana retreats when reduced to one-fifth health 368. |
| Time freeze | Below half health, Horace stops time with golden chains and attacks with a flaming Spiral Sword; the Formless Mother’s Mark protects the player from the blow 368. |
| Defeat reward | Awards Remembrance of the God of Great Runes, but not the anticipated Ideology Rune 369. |
