Background / History
Mai Minghe grew up in a family that ran a small shop. Her mother was intensely cautious, repeatedly checking household safety and warning her against interacting with strangers. Although Mai Minghe considered her mother excessively worried, she eventually recognized that she had lived much the same way: carefully rationing during wartime, maintaining household accounts in peacetime, and avoiding opportunities that might disrupt her security 1.
She once worked in a library, enjoying the job despite its low pay. A discarded poetry collection she received there contained “I Will Pick More Daisies,” a poem she remembered increasingly often in old age. Its wish for a less fearful, more adventurous second life reflected her regrets about paths she had never taken 1.
By eighty-six, Mai Minghe lived alone, had no children, and had outlived her small circle of relatives and friends. A social worker occasionally brought her vegetables and eggs and helped her obtain a Life Alert pendant. She required supplemental oxygen and struggled with the physical risks of ordinary movement 1 2.
Appearance
Mai Minghe initially has a frail, elderly body. After her encounter with a mirror-faced figure in the Nest, the Snake Belt restores her youthful appearance and physical capabilities 1 3 4.
| Feature | Before rejuvenation | After rejuvenation |
|---|---|---|
| Skin and hands | Thick wrinkles, prominent veins, and little warmth 1 | Smooth, full skin without excess wrinkles 3 |
| Hair | — | Thick enough for her fingers to plunge into 3 |
| Build and posture | Bony shoulders and difficulty rising from bed 1 | Firm muscles, strong limbs, and a straight back 3 |
| Sight and voice | Blurred vision and a weak voice during the attack 2 | Clear vision in dim light and a young, clear voice 3 |
| Height | — | She recalls being 172 centimeters tall in her youth 11 |
- She enters the Nest wearing layered pajamas rather than hunting equipment 4 19.
- Her long, untrimmed fingernails become crucial when they scratch a roundhead and collect its blood 12.
Personality
Mai Minghe combines habitual courtesy with dry humor. She offers a burglar tea and biscuits, worries about Jonah wearing short sleeves in November, and considers knitting him a sweater in thanks. Even in the hospital’s morgue, she smooths the sheet after getting up—a habit retained from decades of orderly living 1 18.
Her humor persists under extreme pressure. She suggests that a nauseating resident could work at pumping stomachs and jokes that the Nest’s inhabitants do not look much like chickens. These remarks coexist with genuine fear rather than an absence of it 4.
Rejuvenation changes her willingness to accept danger. Where she once might have surrendered the Snake Belt to avoid conflict, she chooses to defend the possibility of a different life. Her resistance is driven by regret over decades spent yielding, worrying, and postponing her wishes 4 12.
She is also observant and skeptical. Rather than treating the Nest as wholly incomprehensible, she looks for consistent rules beneath its horrors. Her compassion survives this caution: after recognizing the danger posed by Jonah, she still tries to reach the human trapped inside him 10 18 20.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Belt Rejuvenation
The Snake Belt reverses Mai Minghe’s aging, restoring youthful movement, strength, eyesight, and voice 3 4.
- Her chest pain disappears, and she can spring up, vault over hospital beds, and run 3 4.
- The slender patient describes its primary effect as reversing aging, not curing illness; the disappearance of illness is a secondary consequence. It admits uncertainty about what removal would do 4.
- When nearly stripped away, the belt leaves her feeling weak and heavy. Once released by the patient, it coils around her again 12.
- Rejuvenation does not give her overwhelming strength: she remains physically outmatched by Jonah and is weakened by hunger and repeated vomiting 20.
Passage into the Nest
Mai Minghe possesses an individual passage connecting her to the Nest, something Jonah says only one percent of humanity is born with 13.
- Her first known entry occurs when she deliberately falls against her television screen, following a vision of herself doing so 2 3.
- She does not discover this passage until she is eighty-six 13.
- After learning that her original passage is also the way back, she identifies a medical imaging screen as a possible exit. Whether it works is unresolved at the end of Chapter 20 20.
Deduction and Improvised Survival
Mai Minghe survives by exploiting environmental rules and the vulnerabilities of stronger opponents 10 11 12 19.
- Redirecting attacks: She reports pain in selected body parts to make the needle-handed nurse strike residents touching her 10.
- Detecting traps: She distrusts the roundheads’ eagerness to escort her out and infers that an unseen danger is waiting at the doorway 10 11.
- Identifying weaknesses: She reasons that the roundheads’ blood may harm the slender patient because the creatures counter one another; scratching it with bloodied nails confirms this 12.
- Exposing deception: She counts the arrivals following four bell presses and identifies Jonah as the fourth summoned figure 18.
- Using physical limitations: She strikes Jonah’s eyes with her pajama top, then uses a heavy sliding door to crush his parasitic child and restrain him 19 20.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Snake Belt — A pitch-black, icy strap wrapped around her torso in snake-like coils; the Phantasm responsible for her rejuvenation 4.
- Life Alert pendant — An emergency alarm purchased years earlier. Activating it brings two care workers to her apartment during the burglar’s attack 1 2.
- Layered pajamas — Her original clothing on entering the Nest; she later removes the outer top to strike Jonah and seize the parasite without touching it directly 19.
- Roundhead blood — Collected beneath her fingernails and used against the slender patient. A remaining trace produces no reaction when she tests Jonah with it 12 18.
Relationships
- Mother — Raised her with strict precautions against danger. Mai Minghe later recognizes a similar pattern of worry in her own life 1.
- Social worker — Provides occasional groceries and explains the emergency support service behind her Life Alert pendant 1 2.
- Jonah — A red-haired Hunter who helps her escape the ward and offers guidance. She later discovers that a resident is controlling him; the human Jonah briefly resurfaces and asks her to seek the Morgan family’s help 12 13 18 19 20.
- Wei Xilai — Hired Jonah’s group to obtain the Phantasm that Mai Minghe acquires. She tells Jonah that Wei Xilai has died, but he doubts her claim 13.
- Slender patient — A hospital resident determined to remove her Snake Belt, eventually bargaining with the roundheads for possession of it 4 11 12.
- Roundheads — Living humans transformed into flesh tentacles by another resident. Their apparent assistance conceals a plan to deliver her to their controller 10 11.
Story Role / Major Arcs
The Burglary and First Entry
A burglar enters Mai Minghe’s apartment intending to extract something from her body, potentially killing her. She secretly activates Life Alert and prolongs his search for her requested poem by withholding part of its title. When emergency workers arrive, he poses as her grandson 1 2.
Guided by a vision of herself crashing into the television, Mai Minghe insists on approaching it and deliberately falls against its screen. She disappears from her apartment and finds herself on the floor of a hospital ward in the Nest 2 3.
Rejuvenation and Escape from the Ward
After ringing a call bell, Mai Minghe encounters a black, mirror-faced figure and appears to suffer a heart attack. The encounter leaves her young again, with the Snake Belt wound around her body. Both the neighboring patient and a group of Hunters seek the Phantasm 3 4.
Rather than surrender it, she repeatedly rings the bell to bring competing residents into the room. The resulting stalemate nearly collapses when the slender patient negotiates with the roundheads, but she discovers that their blood harms it. She escapes with Jonah on a wheeled hospital bed, avoiding the resident beneath the floor 4 10 11 12.
Jonah’s Deception
Jonah leads Mai Minghe to the morgue, presenting it as a reset point that makes the hospital regard them as dead. He explains the Nest and offers to guide her toward an exit, while warning that his fellow Hunters may still seize her Phantasm 13.
Mai Minghe notices inconsistencies in his behavior and explanation. Reconstructing the ward’s arrivals, she realizes that he was the fourth figure summoned by her bell presses and refuses to follow him farther 18.
The Parasite and Possible Return Passage
The resident controlling Jonah attacks her with a pink, many-legged child that attempts to enter her mouth. Mai Minghe removes it and crushes it in an X-ray room’s sliding door. The resident then exploits her memories of considering motherhood, claiming that this part of her can be used to rebuild its child 19.
While she holds the door against him, the human Jonah briefly regains control and asks her to seek help from the Morgan family. He also explains that her entry passage is her route home. With her strength failing, Mai Minghe releases the door and runs toward a medical imaging screen, gambling that it will return her to Blackmoor City 20.
