Background / History

Childhood and first resident encounter

Chai Si was raised by his mother, Daisy Monroe, and had never met his father. Daisy worked at a restaurant and sometimes left him waiting in her car because affordable childcare was not always available 38 39.

When Chai Si was five, Daisy vanished from the driver's seat immediately before their car struck a truck. He survived with a broken arm, left hospital on the third day, and was temporarily cared for by his great-aunt. Investigators concluded that Daisy's disappearance had inadvertently spared him a worse injury by leaving the steering wheel unattended 38 39.

On the sixth night after the crash, Daisy returned from the Nest, bloodied and barely able to walk. Chai Si ran outside to meet her and discovered a thin rope around her waist. Following it, he encountered the enormous black resident holding the other end 39.

The resident had followed Daisy through her Pathway, which required a car accident in a region with more than ten million residents. It seized Chai Si with a black shadow and offered Daisy a cruel choice: leave the rope intact and die with her son, or sever its route home while supposedly condemning him to death. The resident was ultimately gravely injured and driven back into the Nest. Caironan carried Chai Si away as Daisy entrusted her son to him; her ultimate fate is not established in these passages 40.

Life with Caironan

Chai Si grew up at Caironan's side. Their childhood camping trips included lessons in recognizing constellations—an experience he later recalled while connecting scattered clues during investigations 15 36.

As a youth, Chai Si tried every known method of discovering a Pathway, accumulating scars and lasting injuries without ever entering the Nest. After accepting his failure, he cut the backs of his hands with a hunting knife, perhaps hoping he could physically cut open a Pathway. Unable to become the kind of Hunter Caironan wanted, he instead promised to secure the human world's power and wealth for the Kai Family 15.

Appearance

Chai Si is a towering, well-trained man whose size does not prevent him from moving quietly and agilely 15 32.

  • Height: Six feet six inches 32.
  • Hair and brows: Black hair, usually combed back, and thick black eyebrows 15.
  • Hands: Large and pale, with long fingers; one hand can cover an adult man's face 14 15.
  • Scars: Long, pale scars cross the backs of his hands and extend beneath his watch and cuffs 15.
  • Clothing: Usually wears a suit and carries a small silver comb 14 15.
  • Smile: His lips become thin when he grins, exposing tightly packed white teeth described as sinister and devoid of warmth 34.

Personality

Chai Si is viciously pragmatic and comfortable using torture, intimidation, and bribery. He deliberately heightens a captive's fear to obtain information and treats incomplete intelligence as another problem he is responsible for solving. Caironan criticizes this dependence on brutality, warning that violence alone cannot establish the faction's control over human society 15 33 34.

His loyalty to Caironan is deeply personal. Despite being physically formidable enough to frighten Hunters, he feels like a child before him and is devastated by his disappointment. His inability to enter the Nest feeds his sense of inadequacy; his hatred of powerlessness exceeds even his hatred of residents 15 41.

Chai Si also possesses considerable patience and an appetite for danger. He enjoys the adrenaline of narrowly escaping a train, but can methodically search carriage after carriage for his quarry. Blackmoor City's unpredictability is part of what keeps him there: a repetitive life would, to him, amount to waiting for burial 16 33.

Abilities & Skills

Physical combat

  • Strength and grip: Rapidly subdues a heavy subway driver and drags him by his clothes. Chai Si considers his grip extremely difficult to escape 15 36.
  • Agility: Vaults a subway turnstile with little noise, crosses live tracks, and reaches a platform just ahead of an arriving train 32 33.
  • Baton proficiency: Uses targeted strikes to the ankle and abdomen to collapse an opponent's balance and resistance 36.
  • Limits: His physical strength cannot break the resident-distorted subway window, and he recognizes that skill cannot make him faster than electricity 37.

Investigation and interrogation

  • Combines GPS records, surveillance footage, dashcam evidence, and telephone records to reconstruct Evan's movements 15 16.
  • Infers that a briefly detected Phantasm is moving by subway, then realizes its recoverable hiding place is a named employee rather than an untraceable train 16 17 34.
  • Tests accounts for logical inconsistencies, including why a single death would imply a serial killer 34.
  • Identifies supernatural rules by connecting observed causes and effects rather than relying solely on force 37 41.

Sensory awareness and resistance to Memory Kill

  • By concentrating, sharpens his senses severalfold and constructs a mental map from sounds, smells, and breathing 40.
  • Fights with his eyes closed after identifying the resident's face as the trigger for its memory attack 41.
  • Escapes lethal reinterpretations of his memories by rejecting the claim that he died in events he demonstrably survived 40.
  • Deduces that the resident has a limited supply of dangerous memories and cannot reuse one after expending it 41.

Phantasm use

Phantasm Applications Limits and conditions
Unnamed surveillance-disguise Phantasm Makes surveillance footage depict Chai Si as a goat-headed figure 32. Its broader effects and operating conditions are not given 32.
Rumor Allows rumors to produce real consequences through their spread, credibility, and surrounding “butterfly factors”; retains previous hosts' rumors unless deleted 42. Can commandeer its host's speech. Its defensive behavior can endanger the host, and its remaining usable life is nearly nine years and four months when Chai Si obtains it 37 41 42.
  • No Pathway: Chai Si cannot enter the Nest despite extensive experimentation 15 37.
  • Luck claim: He says his good luck comes from draining luck from nearby people. The passages do not establish this as an actual ability 37.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Extendable T-shaped baton — A black, portable weapon with a cast-iron T-shaped end and ridged grip. He habitually carries it at the small of his back; public firearm restrictions make it a convenient alternative to a gun 33.
  • Emerald-set silver comb — A valuable antique he uses rather than preserving in a display cabinet 15.
  • Cash-filled wallet — Carries substantial cash alongside his weapon, giving him an alternative means of obtaining cooperation 33.
  • Interrogation medical supplies — Uses a boat equipped with a cautery gun, defibrillator, cardiac stimulants, epinephrine, and antibiotics to sustain prolonged questioning 14.

Relationships

  • Caironan / “Uncle Kai” — Guardian, mentor, and faction superior. Raised Chai Si after his childhood encounter with a resident; Chai Si seeks his approval and promises to secure the human world for him 15 36 40.
  • Daisy Monroe — Mother. Her return from the Nest exposed him to his first resident, and her final remembered words placed him in Caironan's care 38 39 40.
  • Huang Li — Newly recruited Kai Family Hunter and subordinate whose Phantasm-sensing ability assists his search. Their partnership includes a dangerous car chase and a staged kidnapping report intended to manipulate the police response 16 17 32.
  • Evan — Target of his interrogation and pursuit. Evan escapes his boat after Chai Si severely injures his arm, leaving Chai Si to reconstruct where he hid the stolen Phantasm 15 16 41.
  • Subway driver — Unknowing Rumor host whom Chai Si captures and brutalizes. Chai Si eventually obtains the Phantasm through a spoken exchange and gives the driver money before leaving 34 36 41.
  • Rumor — Acquired Phantasm. Initially resists capture through dangerous defensive effects; afterward, it uses Chai Si's mouth to explain its functions 36 37 41 42.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Pursuit of Wei Xilai's Phantasms

Caironan assigns Chai Si to recover the Phantasms from Wei Xilai's study shortly after Wei's death. Chai Si tortures Evan, the bodyguard who stole one, but Evan escapes into the sea. Searches of his body, home, car, and belongings yield nothing 14 15 33.

Working with Huang Li, Chai Si tracks the missing Phantasm into Blackmoor City's subway system. He drives recklessly to Brublan Community College Station, uses a fabricated kidnapping-and-bomb-threat report to influence police deployment, and reaches the station three minutes ahead of the train 16 17 32.

Rumor and the subway resident

A driver mistakes Chai Si for the “Subway Serial Killer,” revealing the rumor-producing Phantasm's presence. Chai Si discovers that the driver's account mixes actual incidents with a Netflix crime drama. His attempts to extract the Phantasm trigger a live-wire attack and the arrival of a resident capable of trapping victims in potentially fatal memories 33 34 36 38.

After reliving his childhood trauma, Chai Si avoids the resident's face, throws it through the carriage window, and threatens its host-linked route into the human world. The resident revokes its invitation to Memory Kill and disappears. Chai Si then makes the driver say, “I have a rumor to tell you,” and replies, “I heard a rumor,” completing Rumor's transfer 40 41.

Discovery of the Vulture rumor

After escaping police recognition by changing his clothes and hairstyle, Chai Si stops in a park because Rumor has taken control of his speech. Its explanation leads him to consider manipulating environmental factors to steer a rumor's outcome 41 42.

He learns that Wei Xilai's final rumor concerned a Vulture copying a human and using that person's Pathway to enter the human world. Rumor reports that it came true on November 17, the day after Wei's death. Chai Si subsequently seeks information about Vulture through Hunter contacts 42 47.
