| First Appearance | Mai Minghe’s hospital ward encounter 4 |
Nature and Geography
- Distorted cityscape: The Nest resembles an abandoned Blackmoor City, with familiar place names but warped buildings, streets, and phenomena. Its intersections can have purple traffic lights that visibly grip and release the road surface 6 7 13.
- Changing layout: Familiar routes are not permanently reliable. A previously explored door may open into an unfamiliar room, and even fixtures such as light switches can move between visits 6.
- Local conditions: Individual locations have their own terrain, dangers, opportunities, and rules. Knowledge of one site does not establish the conditions elsewhere 13.
- Synchronized time: Time passes at the same rate as in the human world; night in Blackmoor City is also night in the Nest 6 7.
- Unconfirmed origin: Jonah suggests that the Nest might be Blackmoor City’s shadow cast into a crack in the universe. Hunters also theorize that Nests arise when human society reaches sufficient population density; neither explanation is established as fact 13.
Access and Survival
Pathways
- Only one percent of humanity is born with a personal passage, also called a Pathway, into the Nest. Its activation conditions differ from person to person, and some people never discover theirs 13 15.
- Pathways can open only in major cities with populations over ten million 13.
- Known activation conditions include striking a television screen, sitting in a full bathtub, standing in a toilet while flushing it, and opening a door inside an abandoned building 13.
- Possessing a Pathway does not automatically grant supernatural strength or transform its owner 8.
- The route used to enter is also the route back. Jonah tells Mai Minghe that someone who has crossed their passage once will recognize it on encountering it again 20.
Footholds
- Public footholds include city hall, the Between the Backlight garden, and St. Louis Hospital. Arrivals may encounter Hunters, residents, and unidentified threats in these areas 6.
- Humans can bind themselves to fixed, hidden private footholds. Jin Xueli learns this through a radio bulletin and obtains a secluded room containing a faucet and locked storage cabinet 6.
- A familiar foothold still requires caution: Jin Xueli discovers that a light switch has appeared on a different wall during a later visit 6.
Survival Rules
| Hazard or Condition | Established Details |
|---|---|
| Seven-day limit | According to the resident possessing Jonah, anyone who remains for more than seven days is broken down and incorporated into the Nest 20. |
| Death | The same resident states that death causes the victim’s body, mind, memories, emotions, and experiences to become parts of the Nest in other forms 20. |
| Food and water | Water is generally safe, unlike the Nest’s food. Jin Xueli brings her own provisions 6. |
| Personal belongings | A Hunter’s first lesson is never to leave personal possessions behind, even rubbish 6. |
| Unfamiliar buildings | Jin Xueli considers entering a house on a whim unacceptable, even when seeking a way around a street hazard 7. |
| Travel | A journey of fifteen kilometers can take two days under unusually favorable conditions. A taxi later carries Jin Xueli to Ninety-Ninth Street in about half an hour, though passengers must follow its rules 6 26 43. |
Notable Locations
| Location | Features and Significance |
|---|---|
| St. Louis Hospital | Mai Minghe’s arrival point. Its residents include a slender patient, a nurse, and a creature beneath the floor that controls transformed, round-headed people 4 10 11 12. |
| Hospital morgue | The hospital’s “Life Gate” or reset point. Lying beneath a sheet allows a visitor to be treated as dead, causing the hospital to forget them after the reset 13. |
| Museum of Modern Art | Houses Candle Tears in its first-basement exhibition hall. The radio directs visitors through Door D and the first elevator on the left, warning against the other elevators 6 9. |
| Colorado Avenue | Site of a chalk hopscotch trap. Its squares impose instructions such as placing a particular hand or foot, while later squares are marked “be copied” 7 8. |
| Ninety-Ninth Street subway station | Its entrance reads “Go down for a surprise.” A Vending Machine on the platform sells Phantasm products and is restocked by a resident 43 44 45. |
| City hall and Between the Backlight garden | Known public footholds used when entering the Nest 6. |
Residents and Other Phenomena
Residents
- Residents can mimic ordinary human roles, including patients, nurses, and vending-machine staff. An apparently normal face or helpful conversation does not establish safety 10 44.
- Their behavior can follow discoverable rules. At St. Louis Hospital, pressing the call bell summons figures acting as nurses, which target the person who rang 10.
- Residents can interfere with one another. Mai Minghe discovers that blood from a round-headed victim harms the slender patient and uses it to escape 12.
- Their behavior is not necessarily static. Jin Xueli records a Vulture deliberately distracting her toward a trap as a newly observed behavior 7.
Vultures
- Vultures follow humans while wearing imperfect versions of their faces. They are commonly understood to wait for a target’s death before feeding on the corpse and acquiring an exact likeness 7.
- The Vulture encountered by Jin Xueli copies her memories as well as her appearance, making clothing discrepancies and missing memories important clues during their confrontation 26 29 31.
- Wei Xilai uses the Rumor Phantasm to spread a claim that a Vulture can copy a human and use that person’s Pathway to enter the human world. Rumor reports that this claim came true on November 17 42.
Crossing into the Human World
- Residents capable of entering the human world are exceptionally rare and face restrictive crossing conditions 37 40.
- Severing such a resident’s route into the human world sends it back to the Nest. Chai Si applies this principle during the subway confrontation 40 41.
- Encounters within the Nest can also leave humans with new abilities. Huang Li’s ability to sense Phantasms is presented as one such fortunate outcome among many dangerous possibilities 16.
Information and Navigation
Nest 173 Radio
- Nest 173 Radio broadcasts “Infinite Illusion’s Virtual Guide,” presented by an unnamed figure known only as the host 6.
- Its programming includes dates, news, music, traffic conditions, map updates, and special bulletins. Every time Jin Xueli tunes in, she hears the same welcome 6.
- Special bulletins lead Jin Xueli to her private foothold, a valuable Phantasm, and the Candle Tears exhibit. She considers the radio her lifeline and refuses to sell it 6.
- Its language requires interpretation; favorable publicity can signal danger rather than a safe destination 6.
| Broadcast Wording | Jin Xueli’s Interpretation |
|---|---|
| “Construction,” “renovation,” or “repairs” | The location is changing 6. |
| “Attracting large numbers of visitors” or “a great place for a weekend outing” | Avoid both the location and its surroundings 6. |
| “Remains unchanged, may be entered and exited normally” | Previously investigated routes and risks remain applicable—not an assurance that the area is harmless 6. |
Hunter Intelligence
- Hunter Factions systematically gather and update information, while independent Hunters such as Jin Xueli must develop their own sources 7.
- Jin Xueli records new hazards on her phone and trades useful discoveries for other intelligence at the Between the Backlight bar 7.
- Factions may withhold survival information from rivals. Jonah identifies the hospital morgue’s reset function as knowledge he would not readily share with another faction’s Hunter 13.
Phantasms and the Hunter Economy
- Source of Phantasms: Hunters enter the Nest to retrieve objects and phenomena with effects ranging from small improvements in intelligence to changes in fate and history. Wealthy political and business figures pay high prices for them 13.
- Limited lifespan outside: Phantasms eventually expire and disappear after leaving the Nest. Documented examples include a disguise remote lasting six months and Machine Muscle, or M&Ms, expiring within twenty-four hours 32 44.
- Direct purchases: The Ninety-Ninth Street Vending Machine sells Phantasm products. Jin Xueli purchases a purple soda described as capable of killing people for $12,000 45.
- Faction influence: Caironan describes the Nest as a Hunter Faction’s foundation, but regards influence over human-world institutions and everyday reality as the greater measure of power 15.
- Secrecy and regulation: The author’s worldbuilding notes state that 99.9% of humanity does not know about the Nest, Phantasms, or Hunters. Personal, uncontrollable Pathway conditions and public ignorance obstruct government access and regulation 50.
Major Events
Mai Minghe’s Arrival
Mai Minghe enters through a television screen and finds herself in St. Louis Hospital, restored to youth by the Snake Belt. After escaping the ward with Jonah, she discovers that a resident is controlling him. Jonah briefly regains control on his fifth day in the Nest, explains how to return through her passage, and asks her to seek help from the Morgan family 4 12 20.
Candle Tears and the Vulture
Jin Xueli follows a radio bulletin to the Museum of Modern Art, where a Vulture wearing her likeness attacks her. Both become involved with Candle Tears, a Phantasm capable of changing history. Conflicting timelines and copied memories complicate her efforts to distinguish herself from the resident before she resumes her journey to Ninety-Ninth Street 6 9 22 23 26 29 43.
Increasing Anomalies and the Missing Squad
Hunters observe that changes and anomalies have become more frequent, including unusual Vulture behavior and changes to the Vending Machine’s products. Later, Amber tells Jin Xueli that a Morgan Family squad sent into the Nest has failed to return; Jonah is known to be alive but requires urgent rescue 44 45 47.
