Background / History

Alfred traveled through the Grand Line in his youth, gaining experience and knowledge of weapons and Devil Fruits. He later served as captain of King Noah’s secret guard and received orders to protect Prince Arthur in secret before the Noah Kingdom’s destruction 5 18.

After the kingdom fell, Alfred was among the captives aboard the Donquixote Family’s slave ship. He concealed his abilities and acted like a frightened old man because he could not assess the enemy’s strength or guarantee Arthur’s safety. Arthur’s escape and defeat of the slavers freed him before he needed to reveal himself 2 5.

Alfred then disclosed his identity and renewed his promise to protect Arthur. Although Arthur offered to release him from service so he could live peacefully, Alfred refused and raised the possibility of restoring their kingdom. He agreed to keep that ambition secret after Arthur warned that they lacked the strength and knowledge to challenge the World Government 5.

Appearance

Alfred is an elderly man with white hair and a deeply wrinkled face. When he reveals his identity, his trembling demeanor gives way to an upright posture and bright, alert eyes 5.

Personality

Alfred’s loyalty extends beyond obedience: he considers protecting Arthur a binding promise to the late king and is willing to sacrifice his life to fulfill it. Seeing Arthur’s Atomic Light Sword strengthens his belief that the prince can restore the kingdom, prompting him to kneel and pledge his service again 5 7.

He is cautious rather than blindly confident. He initially hides his strength to avoid endangering Arthur, worries when Drake reveals his Devil Fruit transformation, and becomes increasingly anxious as the North Blue’s forces gather against them. Nevertheless, he follows Arthur’s decisions even when he remains unconvinced of their safety 5 11 19 20.

Alfred values strength earned through training over power obtained from a Devil Fruit. In battle, he is merciless toward hostile pirates, but he and Arthur spare the civilians employed at the captured base 15 18.
