Background / History
Undercover Mission
Drake gained a reputation in the North Blue as a former Navy rear admiral who had defected to piracy. His defection was a cover: he remained a Navy operative and continued receiving orders from his superiors. Even his pirate subordinates were unaware of his allegiance 9.
After Diamante placed a thirty-million-Beli underworld bounty on Arthur D. Dragonier, the Navy ordered Drake to investigate him. Drake sent his crew to find Arthur, allowing them to believe they were pursuing the bounty. His mission could be completed by persuading Arthur to join the Navy, which considered him a potentially valuable recruit 9 10.
Battle with Arthur
When their ships met, Drake’s crew announced their intention to claim Arthur’s bounty. Drake instead suggested that joining the Navy could save Arthur’s life. Arthur, already aware of his undercover identity, challenged him to fight while Alfred engaged Drake’s crew 10.
Their opening clash took place in midair. After more than a dozen exchanges, Drake recognized that Arthur’s physical strength might exceed his own. Arthur held a slight advantage despite using less than half his strength 10.
Drake subsequently entered his Allosaurus hybrid form and attacked with two rapiers. Arthur caught both blades barehanded, crushed them, and forced him back against a mast. With Arthur’s Atomic Light Sword held at his neck, Drake conceded defeat 11.
Arthur spared him, regarding him as a good Marine and a possible future recruit for his kingdom’s restoration. Before departing, Arthur invited Drake to become his subordinate when they next met and promised to let him “walk fully in the sunlight.” The remark shocked Drake because it implied that Arthur knew his concealed allegiance 11.
Renewed Attention to Arthur
After Arthur seized the Donquixote Family’s North Blue base, Doflamingo issued a three-hundred-million-Beli bounty for his death. Drake was among the prominent North Blue figures whose attention turned toward Arthur; no further action by him is documented in that chapter 16.
Personality
Drake follows Navy orders even when he does not understand their purpose. He also tolerates his crew’s boastful bounty-hunter rhetoric to preserve his pirate cover, despite privately finding it exasperating 9 10.
He has considerable pride in his strength and resents Arthur’s dismissive challenges. Nevertheless, he can regain his composure under pressure: after experiencing a vivid primeval vision upon seeing Arthur’s transformed eyes, he quickly refocuses on the battle 11.
His defeat leaves him deeply unsettled. Beyond fearing death, he is troubled by Arthur’s knowledge of his identity and feels helpless before a power he compares to that of a Marine Admiral 11.
Abilities & Skills
Ancient Zoan Transformation
Drake possesses the Dragon-Dragon Fruit, Ancient Zoan, Allosaurus Form, which enhances his physical capabilities 10 11.
- Hybrid form: His body becomes taller and more imposing, with a dinosaur-like head and intimidating eyes 11.
- Physical enhancement: The transformation increases his physical abilities by dozens of times, potentially more than a hundredfold 11.
- Experience: Having possessed his fruit for a considerable time, Drake has greater familiarity with its abilities than Arthur has with his recently acquired Godzilla Fruit 11.
- Limitations: His enhanced physique cannot overcome Arthur’s strength. Drake also judges that it would offer no protection against a direct hit from the Atomic Light Sword 11.
Dual-Rapier Swordsmanship
Drake’s preferred fighting style uses a rapier in each hand rather than relying solely on his fists 11.
- His full-strength hybrid-form slashes carry enough force to cleave a large ship 11.
- Arthur stops both blades barehanded and destroys them, ending Drake’s armed offensive 11.
Unarmed Combat
- Drake exchanges more than a dozen powerful blows with Arthur, producing gusts strong enough to disrupt the footing of nearby fighters 10.
- He believes his physical strength exceeds that of even a pirate with a bounty above three hundred million Beli; this is his own assessment, not a demonstrated victory 10.
Undercover Operations
- Maintains a convincing identity as a Navy defector turned pirate 9.
- Directs a pirate crew whose members do not know that their captain is still serving the Navy 9.
- Uses the pursuit of Arthur’s bounty as cover for a Navy investigation and recruitment attempt 9 10.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Two rapiers — Carried at his waist and used simultaneously in hybrid form; both are crushed by Arthur 11.
- Pirate ship — Flies a black skull flag and carries the crew he commands under his assumed pirate identity 10.
Relationships
- Arthur D. Dragonier — Navy investigation target and prospective recruit who defeats him. Arthur knows his secret identity, spares his life, and offers him a future place as a subordinate; Drake does not accept during their encounter 9 10 11.
- Navy superiors — His actual commanders, whose orders he continues to obey despite his supposed defection 9 10.
- Pirate crew — Subordinates who admire his strength and believe he is pursuing Arthur for the bounty. They remain unaware of his Navy mission and are attacked by Alfred during the encounter 9 10 11.
