Life under Arlong

Nami grew up with Nojiko under the care of their adoptive mother, Belle-mère. After Belle-mère’s death, Nami lived under Arlong’s control and drew sea charts for his crew. She pursued an agreement allowing her to buy Cocoyasi Village’s freedom for 100 million Beli, despite privately doubting that Arlong would honor it 25 26 29 75.

To collect the money, she stole from pirates, merchant ships, and wealthy households. During this period, she partnered with Carina, another thief. When they were caught stealing a treasure hunter’s valuables, Nami initially believed Carina had abandoned her; she later realized that Carina had acted as bait to give her an opportunity to escape 28 178.

Liberation of Cocoyasi Village

Lott first approached Nami and Nojiko at their orange grove, claiming to be a merchant. On learning how much Nami still needed, he paid 100 million Beli for oranges worth only a small fraction of that amount and encouraged her to buy back the village 24 25.

Arlong deliberately spoiled the transaction by scattering the money, declaring it unacceptable because it was wet, and seizing Nami by the throat. When Nojiko intervened, he attacked her as well. Lott rescued both sisters, and Nami finally asked him for help after the villagers arrived prepared to fight for her. His crew destroyed Arlong’s rule, freeing Cocoyasi Village 26 27 28.

Joining the Lott Pirates

Nami accepted Lott’s invitation on the condition that she control the crew’s treasure. He appointed her navigator and treasurer, and she explained to Nojiko that sailing with him would let her pursue her dream of mapping the world 29.

Before leaving, she visited Belle-mère’s grave and received Genzo’s blessing. The following morning, she boarded the departing Skybreaker after stealing wallets from the villagers gathered to see her off 29.

Appearance

• Hair and face: Short orange hair, large eyes, and a youthful face at her introduction 24.

Personality

Nami’s concern for others predates her rescue. While still trapped by Arlong’s agreement, she tries to keep Lott’s group away from the fish-men and warns the villagers not to risk their lives for her. She is also moved by Laboon’s suffering and asks Lott to help him 25 27 35.

Her love of money shapes her conduct as treasurer. She secures control of the crew’s fortune, charges her companions exorbitant interest, and repeatedly complains about newspaper prices. Even after the crew acquires enormous wealth, she fiercely objects to spending trillions of Beli to furnish Laugh Tale with treasure 29 30 36 54 433.

She is affectionate toward Lott but initially jealous of women who attract his attention. Over time, she accepts that he loves several women, telling him that what matters is retaining a place in his heart 38 62 95 170.

Nami also has a mischievous streak. She pretends to be exhausted so Lott will carry her and later frightens Iceburg’s young secretary with an invented story that their captain eats children. In combat, that talent for deception becomes a weapon: she uses feigned vulnerability to lure Martin into striking distance 62 355 472.

Navigation and Weather Prediction

Nami combines natural weather sensitivity with her role as the Skybreaker’s navigator 29 34.

• Detects changes in airflow and pressure before dangerous weather develops 120 121.

Cloud-Cloud Fruit

The Logia-type Cloud-Cloud Fruit allows Nami to become cloud and manipulate several kinds of clouds, including those found on Sky Island 34.

• Elemental body: Reforms after Momonga cuts her in half; ordinary Marine gunfire also passes harmlessly through her 51 75.
• Weather control: Gathers surrounding clouds and produces rainfall in cooperation with Lott 41.
• Cloud restraints: Extends her arm into a cloud whip or net, binding Agent Yaowai before he can mount an effective attack 317 318.
• Cloud traps: Creates a purple, swamp-like cloud that swallows Miyamoto Xieyin’s charging body 298.
• Deception: Lets her head fall to the ground while Sugar approaches her, frightening Sugar into unconsciousness 192.
• Limits: Elemental transformation is not an automatic answer to every attack. Vian’s sudden hybrid-form charge catches her before she can transform in advance 201.

Island Cloud and Large-Scale Transport

Island Cloud is the foundation of Nami’s ability to move ships and inhabited islands 61 62.

• Persistent support: Once created, Island Cloud continues supporting its load without requiring her constant exertion or presence 61.
• Low-cost movement: Creating clouds consumes substantial energy; moving existing clouds requires very little stamina 141 171.
• Seawater resistance: After her Devil Fruit side effects are removed, the clouds do not dissolve when partly submerged 61.
• Transport capacity: Carries both a flying auxiliary ship and the Polar Tang, relocates Sky Island and Water 7, and later transports more than twenty prepared islands together 84 141 352 382.
• Combat use: Creates enormous cloud arms beneath Vian and throws his giant rhinoceros body across the battlefield 198.
