Background / History

Academy Years

Obito attends Ninja Academy Class 1-C, while Lin Ze studies in Class 1-B. Their first encounter occurs after Lin Ze sees him patiently helping an elderly woman cross the street. Obito introduces himself as the future Hokage and recognizes Lin Ze through reports of his taijutsu skill 20 21.

Although he knows Ryōta Uchiha, Obito does not repeat Ryōta’s disparaging remarks about Lin Ze. Instead, he awkwardly stops himself and tells Lin Ze not to take Ryōta’s bad temper seriously. Lin Ze later remembers him as a boisterous, frequently late academy underachiever whose kindness and ambition were genuine 21 296.

Kannabi Bridge

During the fighting near Kannabi Bridge, Kakashi loses the use of his left eye while saving Obito. Obito subsequently awakens his Two-Tomoe Sharingan while trying to rescue Rin from an Iwagakure ninja. When a huge boulder collapses, he pushes Kakashi clear and is crushed in his place 296.

Lin Ze observes the battle from above but deliberately declines to intervene. Concealed White Zetsu retrieve the dying Obito and carry him underground. Obito’s survival later depends on integration with White Zetsu’s body, and he entrusts his other Sharingan to Kakashi 296 297 481.

Rin’s Death and Madara’s Successor

Madara selects Obito as the future executor of the Eye of the Moon Plan and orders Tobi, a White Zetsu, to guide him toward a predetermined encounter with despair. The scheme centers on Rin being made the Three-Tails’ jinchūriki and used as a weapon against Konoha 212 286.

To prevent that attack, Rin deliberately throws herself onto Kakashi’s Lightning Blade. Obito witnesses her death, awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan, and slaughters the surrounding Kirigakure ninja. He does not realize that Madara helped engineer the tragedy 297.

Madara offers him the prospect of a perfect world containing Rin. Obito accepts the plan and, at Madara’s instruction, inherits the identity “Madara Uchiha.” The elderly Madara then dies, leaving Obito to carry out his designs 297.

Appearance

Obito’s presentation changes from a goggle-wearing academy boy to a masked conspirator, then to a white-haired Ten-Tails jinchūriki 20 358 604.

  • Academy appearance: Wears goggles 20.
  • Masked identity: Conceals his face behind an orange spiral mask; during his early approach to Lin Ze, only one Sharingan is exposed 334 358.
  • Clothing: Wears black robes and later Akatsuki’s red-cloud attire 485 489.
  • Unmasked appearance: Has a pale face when recovering from his defeat by Ryōta 496.
  • Ten-Tails transformation: Gains white hair, two forehead horns, white robes, and nine floating Truth-Seeking Orbs 604.

Personality

As a child, Obito is enthusiastic, straightforward, and helpful. His ambition to become Hokage accompanies ordinary acts of kindness rather than a concern for prestige alone. His discomfort over Ryōta’s insults also shows that he is unwilling to casually mistreat someone on a clansman’s behalf 20 21.

Rin’s death transforms that outlook into a rejection of reality itself. Obito comes to regard the existing world as a false hell and the Eye of the Moon Plan as the only lasting salvation. Lin Ze concludes that simply resurrecting Rin would not satisfy him: Obito wants a world in which Rin, Kakashi, Minato, and the others can live without renewed danger or loss 297 498.

His remaining attachments do not prevent calculated cruelty. He feels conflicted about Minato but decides that his teacher must die because Flying Thunder God threatens his operations and Minato might uncover his identity. He likewise rejects any obligation to his clan, treating its extermination as both threat removal and an opportunity to collect Sharingan 358.

Repeated defeats make him more cautious. After encountering opponents who can penetrate Kamui’s dimension, he abandons confidence in effortless escape, changes hiding places constantly, and avoids direct confrontation with Lin Ze. Nevertheless, he remains willing to exploit another person’s grief when recruiting allies 494 498 522 541.

Abilities & Skills

Kamui

Obito’s principal Mangekyō ability manipulates space through transportation into the Kamui Dimension 344 395.

  • Intangibility: Transfers his body, or parts of it, into the dimension so that attacks pass through him 344 487 489.
  • Spatial travel: Disappears into a vortex and reappears elsewhere, including behind an opponent 344 394.
  • Transporting others: Carries captives and allies through Kamui, including Ryōta and Kisame 394 406.
  • Defensive absorption: Creates a vortex barrier approximately ten meters across to draw incoming attacks into his dimension; later uses Kamui Dimension Devouring against Ryōta’s wind attacks 405 489.
  • Remote attack: Produces a spatial distortion behind Hiashi, targeting his head 434.
  • Duration: Lin Ze identifies a five-minute intangibility window during their confrontation 405.

Kamui has several demonstrated weaknesses:

  • Attacking requires an opening: Intelligence available to Mei identifies the instant Obito becomes solid to attack as a chance to strike him 485.
  • No intangibility inside its own dimension: His actual body is present there, leaving him dependent on movement and spatial defenses 489.
  • Dimensional intrusion: Onibi’s and Ryōta’s Divine Crossing can follow spatial traces into Kamui, removing its safety as a refuge 395 491.
  • Spatial interference: Lin Ze’s God Pursuit can repel him while intangible and disrupt Kamui’s absorption vortex 404 405.
  • Boundary attacks: Itachi places Amaterasu at the boundary between dimensions, threatening to burn Obito as soon as he becomes tangible 487.
  • Ocular strain: Repeated use causes pain, bleeding, and blurred vision despite his regenerative support 391 405.

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Obito uses his Sharingan for direct control and to resist hostile ocular techniques 487 490.

  • Jinchūriki control: Manipulates Utakata and strengthens his control to make the Six-Tails obstruct pursuers 485 490.
  • Nine-Tails control: Controls the Nine-Tails inside Naruto during the events associated with the Uchiha massacre 434 571.
  • Genjutsu resistance: Counters Itachi’s Tsukuyomi with his own Mangekyō ocular power after reclaiming both eyes 487.
  • Non-Eternal eyes: Dual Kamui does not eliminate his ocular-power limitations; prolonged combat against an Eternal Mangekyō user still puts him at a disadvantage 453 489.

Hashirama Cells and Wood Release

Hashirama’s cells provide regeneration, support his ocular recovery, and enable Wood Release 391 403 487.

  • Regeneration: Repairs severe injuries and helps replenish depleted ocular power 391 403 414.
  • Cutting Sprigs: Produces wooden spikes from his body and surrounding surfaces 485 489.
  • Deep Forest Emergence: Generates a large forest intended to entangle Itachi’s Susanoo; its stated range is sufficient to trap a tailed beast 487.
  • Wood Wall: Raises a defensive barrier against Ryōta’s wind blades 489.
  • Body alteration: Turns his right arm into wood to block a Rasenshuriken, though the attack shreds it 489.
  • Limits: Amaterasu destroys newly regenerated tissue, while major injuries and ocular strain can persist for days 406 414.

Izanagi

Izanagi allows Obito to negate fatal injuries by converting an unfavorable reality into a dream 406.

  • Against Lin Ze: Erases a chest wound inflicted by the Spiral Lance 406.
  • Against Ryōta: Reverses fatal chest and back injuries in separate uses 489 491.
  • Permanent cost: Each activation blinds the Sharingan used to cast it 406 489 491.
  • Finite reserves: After consuming both spare Sharingan brought to the battle with Ryōta, another activation would require sacrificing one of his own Mangekyō and its Kamui ability 491.

Fire Release and Close Combat

  • Fire Release: Blast Wave Wild Dance: Exhales a tornado of flames to intercept Ryōta’s wind-blade sword 489.
  • Black Receivers: Strikes hard enough to crack White Tiger’s iron-sand shield and numb his arm 344.
  • Coordinated attacks: Combines shuriken, intangible approaches, and Kisame’s pressure to restrict an opponent’s escape 395.
  • Wooden-spike combat: Deflects three incoming kunai before precisely killing a Kirigakure guard with a spike through the throat 485.

Ten-Tails Jinchūriki Powers

His completed transformation grants true Six Paths-level chakra and nine Truth-Seeking Orbs 604.

  • Truth-Seeking weaponry: Combines all nine orbs into a black staff and enlarges it to mountain-like proportions for an overhead strike 606.
  • Six Paths combat: Battles Lin Ze after the latter fully activates Five Cycles True Dragon Sage Art, though the transformation does not make Obito untouchable 604 605.
  • Rinne Rebirth: Uses the technique under Madara’s coercive control to restore Madara to life 607.
  • Control vulnerability: Madara’s unreleased heart curse suppresses his consciousness and takes control of his body despite his new power 607.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Black Receivers — Used as close-range striking weapons 344.
  • Black iron chains — Released from his sleeve to attack Onibi inside the Kamui Dimension 395.
  • Kunai and shuriken — Used for immediate attacks and to restrict an opponent’s retreat 395.
  • Spare Three-Tomoe Sharingan — Expended as disposable resources for Izanagi 406 489 491.
  • Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan — Confirmed to be in his possession, although Kotoamatsukami is unavailable for use at that time 406.
  • Demonic Statue of the Outer Path — Serves as the focus for the tailed-beast fusion preceding his Ten-Tails transformation 604.

Relationships

  • Rin Nohara — His beloved teammate. Her death triggers his Mangekyō awakening and becomes the emotional foundation of his pursuit of an ideal world 297 498.
  • Kakashi — A treasured comrade whom he saves at Kannabi Bridge and entrusts with his left eye. He later chooses to reclaim that eye despite his lingering attachment 296 297 415 487.
  • Minato Namikaze — His former teacher. Obito deliberately seeks his death to remove both a tactical obstacle and someone capable of exposing him 358 368.
  • Madara Uchiha — His apparent benefactor and ideological mentor, but also the architect of his manipulation. Madara ultimately controls, mutilates, and discards him 297 607.
  • Black Zetsu and White Zetsu — Collaborators in surveillance, political destabilization, and the Eye of the Moon Plan. Black Zetsu privately regards Obito as a pawn 358 415 522.
  • Lin Ze — An academy acquaintance whom Obito repeatedly tries to recruit through shared loss. Without initially understanding all of Lin Ze’s disguises, he also develops a bitter rivalry with “Crescent Moon” 21 334 403 498.
  • Kisame Hoshigaki — A combat partner who addresses him as “Mr. Madara.” Obito shields him during their defeat by Crescent Moon and helps him escape 395 405 406.
  • Uchiha Onibi / Ghost Fire — An assassination target whose Divine Crossing threatens Kamui’s dimensional security. Obito kidnaps Ryōta to lure him into an ambush 394 395 403.
  • Ryōta Uchiha — A former academy acquaintance who later seeks vengeance for Onibi. His dimensional pursuit forces Obito to expend both spare Izanagi eyes 21 489 491.
  • Uchiha Itachi — A survivor of the massacre Obito orchestrates and a determined pursuer. Itachi later confronts him in Kirigakure with Eternal Mangekyō powers 487 519 529.
  • Nagato — A collaborator whom Obito ultimately treats as a disposable Rinnegan vessel rather than a savior 522 596.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Minato’s son and a prospective pawn. After learning Obito’s responsibility for his parents’ deaths and the Uchiha tragedy, Naruto regards him as a central enemy 541 571.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Recruitment and the Nine-Tails’ Rampage

Disguised as Madara, Obito approaches Lin Ze with an invitation to create a peaceful world without war or loss. Lin Ze rejects the offer and insists on restoring his lost companion through his own methods 334.

Within Akatsuki, Obito tests White Tiger’s combat abilities and prepares an operation against Konoha. His private objective includes killing Minato, whose death he later regards as the successful completion of that goal. The unidentified Crescent Moon’s theft of Nine-Tails chakra becomes a persistent concern 344 358 368 403.

Campaign Against the Uchiha

Obito orders Black Zetsu to intensify Konoha’s suspicions of the Uchiha while secretly strengthening the clan’s radicals. He intends to destroy the clan before it can become a united obstacle and harvest its Sharingan, especially Mangekyō eyes 358.

Shisui’s ability to alter wills makes him a priority threat. Obito participates in the attack on him, then targets Onibi by abducting Ryōta. Onibi follows him directly into Kamui, exposing a weakness Obito had not anticipated 385 390 394 395.

Crescent Moon intervenes in the ensuing battle and decisively overpowers Obito and Kisame. Obito survives through Izanagi and escapes, later reporting Onibi dead. Recognizing the inadequacy of a single Mangekyō against Eternal eyes, he decides to take back Kakashi’s eye 403 405 406 414 415.

On the night of the Uchiha massacre, Hiashi keeps him occupied long enough to prevent him from securing Fugaku’s Mangekyō. Itachi’s group escapes to Dragon Release Village 487.

Kirigakure and Defeat by the Survivors

Obito turns his attention to Kirigakure, which he blames for Rin’s death. He controls Utakata and intends to install him as Sixth Mizukage while eliminating Elder Genji and Mei Terumi 453 484 485.

Itachi confronts him, while Ryōta pursues him into Kamui. Unable to rely on intangibility within the dimension, Obito suffers repeated mortal injuries and exhausts his two spare Sharingan through Izanagi 487 489 491.

Afterward, he pushes Nagato toward a preemptive attack on the Eternal Mangekyō wielders, presenting his personal enemies as threats to Akatsuki. He also offers Lin Ze Rei Uesugi’s resurrection through Rinne Rebirth as a recruitment incentive 494 495 496 498.

Underground Operations

For three years, Obito remains elusive while secretly recruiting. Fear of Lin Ze and Divine Crossing prevents him from staying in one hiding place for more than half a day 529 541.

He eventually organizes Deidara, Zabuza, Orochimaru, and Hidan into Akatsuki teams and assigns himself, Nagato, and Konan overall coordination duties. He also approaches the Fourth Raikage to discuss cooperation 547 557.

His later scheme is to provoke Naruto’s rampage, draw Itachi into conflict with Konoha, and seize Itachi’s eyes after both sides weaken each other. Tagitsuhime’s presence ruins the opportunity 568.

Ten-Tails Transformation and Death

During the conflict involving Kumogakure, Obito controls the reanimated Hashirama to incapacitate Killer B and extract the Eight-Tails’ chakra. He later confronts the defeated Nagato with the revelation that Madara selected him merely as a durable vessel for the Rinnegan 588 596.

Obito completes his Ten-Tails transformation and fights Lin Ze at Six Paths level. Madara then activates the curse at his heart, forces him to perform Rinne Rebirth, and removes both his right Mangekyō and left Rinnegan 604 605 607.

Mortally depleted and abandoned, Obito recognizes Madara’s betrayal. His final thoughts return to Rin before his breathing stops. The Ten-Tails’ chakra subsequently erupts from his corpse 607.

Later Depiction

A later passage shows Obito witnessing Lin Ze burn Black Zetsu to death. He instinctively becomes intangible when Lin Ze looks toward him, but Lin Ze declines to attack and tells him that he has taken the wrong path. The supplied passage does not explain this appearance following his earlier death 655.
