Background / History

Previous Life and Arrival in Konoha

Lin Ze grew up in an orphanage in his previous life and became an ordinary office worker. Diagnosed with terminal cancer in his late twenties, he quit his job and spent his savings during his final half-year. After dying, his soul entered the body of a young boy in the Naruto world; the original child's consciousness had already disappeared, and Lin Ze inherited none of his memories 1 5 17.

ANBU brought him to Konoha, where he entered the orphanage cared for by Nonō. He initially estimated his body to be about four years old. Half a year later, he identified the period as Konoha Year 37 and believed himself to be around five 1.

His body's family came from an Uzumaki settlement near the Land of Whirlpools. Later Kirigakure records identified the destruction of that settlement as an operation carried out by its ANBU Third Squad 21 525.

Academy and ANBU

Believing his ninjutsu prospects to be poor, Lin Ze initially concentrated on physical training. His actual problem was insufficient chakra rather than an inability to learn techniques: he quickly learned the Clone Technique, but could not sustain its clones 1 6.

The Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Azure Dragon gave him a second route to strength. He concealed its transformations, using relentless taijutsu practice to explain his abnormal physical development. Might Duy supplied formal instruction, while Hiruzen eventually informed him of his Uzumaki ancestry 2 3 14 21.

After winning an Academy assessment, Lin Ze entered ANBU through Hiruzen's special recruitment. At seven, he defeated Uchiha En during the assessment and passed in second place. He subsequently served under Fox alongside Night Owl and Gray Wolf in Squad B-5 40 54 56 57 62 81.

Root Conflict and Independent Research

Danzo's attempts to control him—and Nonō's forced service—made Root a persistent enemy. Following an ambush in the Land of Grass, Lin Ze concealed the extent of his retaliation and supplied a plausible account of his escape. He concluded that Hiruzen valued him but would not sacrifice Root's usefulness on his behalf 25 68 72 74 75.

While continuing ANBU work, he financed the orphanage, rescued Kabuto from the ruins near Kikyo Mountain, and developed a laboratory with Kabuto as a researcher. He also investigated the Ryūmyaku and sought powers beyond the limits he expected from his Devil Fruit alone 103 146 149 180 181.

His effort to free Nonō involved studying cursed seals, capturing Root personnel as test subjects, and raiding Root facilities. He eventually killed her two guards and brought her to Ascension Island, reuniting her with Kabuto and Miyamoto Ichirō 211 213 217 226 231.

Rei's Death and Departure from Konoha

Danzo used Kurenai and Rei Uesugi as leverage against Lin Ze. Rei's death transformed his response into open retaliation. He left with Kurenai and Rei's remains, promising Asuma that he would find a way to bring Rei back 305 309 313.

At the frontline camp, Uchiha Onibi explained that his Mangekyō ability could not reach the dead. Lin Ze considered sacrificing Onibi and Ryōta's interests to obtain the Rinnegan, but refused to exploit them. He announced that he had killed Danzo and Orochimaru and defected from Konoha, then departed to pursue another route to resurrection 314.

Dragon Release Village and the Akatsuki

Lin Ze expanded his independent network, taking in Kimimaro and Haku, working with Kisame on a mission reported to Pain, and developing sage arts through Ryūchi Cave. Dragon Release Village later became the center of his political, military, and research activity 348 363 383 387 574.

Rei later appeared teaching basic ninjutsu, but Lin Ze still regarded her true resurrection—and Onibi's—as unfinished goals. He refused Obito's offer to revive her in exchange for abandoning Itachi, Ryōta, and Crescent Moon 413 503.

Before leaving for the Five Kage Summit, he promised to marry Kurenai after dealing with the Akatsuki. At the summit confrontation, he rejected the assembled opponents' confidence that a Rinnegan and multiple Kage-level fighters would be enough to defeat him 576 578.

Six Paths Battles and the Wider Universe

During the struggle to stop Obito's transformation into the Ten-Tails jinchūriki, Lin Ze bypassed Black Zetsu using Time-Reversal Trace and Divine Crossing. Against Madara, his Thunder-Bagua shattered a Truth-Seeking Staff and inflicted severe injuries, earning Madara's acknowledgment as his strongest opponent 603 609.

His eventual soul reunion explained why normal Devil Fruit awakening had remained inaccessible: the Sage of Six Paths had retained the other half of his soul in the Pure Land. After awakening and attaining Kekkei Mōra, Lin Ze turned his attention toward the approaching Ōtsutsuki 620 635.

Upon reaching world level, he restored victims of All-Killing Ash Bones and others whose lives had ended tragically. He then traveled through history to study Deva Path, tracing Yashen Qing's rise from an ordinary youth to the Shinobi World's first world lord. Twenty years later, Lin Ze waited near the system's sun with Qingtian and Mountain Lord for Deva Path's arrival 673 674.

Personality

Lin Ze begins as a guarded survivor. His previous life taught him to avoid trouble and obligations, leaving him polite but emotionally distant. Nonō and the orphanage draw him out of that isolation, giving him relationships he considers worth risking his life to protect 23.

He is diligent and calculating rather than naturally reckless. He trains before and after classes, conceals transformations beneath bandages, uses clones to scout dangerous situations, and builds convincing explanations for events that might expose his secrets. He also recognizes that friendships can make Konoha's leadership regard him as more reliable 3 21 72 80 81.

His caution does not make him immune to arrogance. After several successful infiltrations, he delays escaping Kumogakure's encirclement to investigate its tracking method—a mistake he later explicitly recognizes 190.

His guiding principle is “Follow One's Heart.” He refuses to sacrifice his identity merely to force an awakening and maintains boundaries when dealing with friends. Those boundaries do not prevent ruthless treatment of enemies: he uses Root captives for seal experiments and strips condemned enemies and criminals of their souls to strengthen his own 213 314 493 528.

With people close to him, he is playful and teasing. His banter with Nonō and Kurenai contrasts sharply with his coldness toward those who threaten them 4 5 9 305 309.
