His protection is nevertheless shaped by political calculation. He prioritizes village stability, balances competing factions, and tolerates misconduct when confronting it would threaten Konoha’s leadership or wartime strength. After Lin Ze survives a Root attack, Hiruzen recognizes gaps in his account but welcomes an outcome that could make the boy more dependent on his protection. Hiruzen’s attachment to Orochimaru repeatedly undermines his judgment. Recognition and Recruitment of Lin Ze

Hiruzen first addresses Lin Ze’s Academy cohort with a speech about the Will of Fire. Later, an ANBU report describing six-year-old Lin Ze exchanging blows with Uchiha Onibi draws his attention. He consults Nara Luhong and reviews records suggesting that Lin Ze possesses Uzumaki ancestry 7 16 17.

During their first private meeting, Hiruzen praises Lin Ze’s vitality, training, and potential. He places him under ANBU observation and offers a route to chūnin rank and ANBU training after graduation. Following Lin Ze’s performance in the Academy’s Combat Ranking Assessment, Hiruzen confirms that he should finish the term before entering ANBU training, refusing Danzo’s demand to place him in Root 21 39.

Hiruzen remains concerned that an orphan from another village may lack attachment to Konoha. Nara Luhong points to Lin Ze’s developing relationships, while Hatake Sakumo assures him that the people Lin Ze wants to protect are all in the village. Sakumo’s assessment eases Hiruzen’s concerns 59.

Growing Unease over Lin Ze’s Strength

Lin Ze’s rapid development into a Kage-level fighter brings Hiruzen both relief and anxiety. He values the military advantage but worries about the secrets and intentions of a subordinate whose strength has exceeded his expectations 234 251 252.

Danzo presents evidence linking Lin Ze to an attack on Root, including scales and claw marks resembling his transformation. Hiruzen refuses to treat those similarities as conclusive proof and rejects action against a celebrated war hero without stronger evidence 252 253.

After Lin Ze returns with Root corpses and reports that Danzo ambushed him with more than twenty operatives, Hiruzen promises to handle Danzo. He grants Lin Ze two months to search the Land of Earth for Yumi and Ayumi, but also decides to have Root informants monitor him there 257.

Orochimaru’s Exposure and Lin Ze’s Departure

Hiruzen announces his intention to resign, citing age and wartime setbacks. During deliberations over the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze receives broad clan support, while allegations of human experimentation destroy Orochimaru’s remaining political standing 298 300 301.

Presented with laboratory locations and experimental records, Hiruzen personally confronts Orochimaru. He demands the surrender of his research and submission to village judgment. Although Hiruzen gains the advantage in their battle, Orochimaru escapes as small snakes after taking a staff blow, and Hiruzen declines to pursue him 302.

Hiruzen subsequently leads more than twenty shinobi to the Valley of the End after reports of a missing squad. There, he discovers Danzo holding Kurenai Yuhi and Rei Uesugi captive to coerce Lin Ze. His intervention exposes the confrontation but does not resolve the leadership’s internal divisions 307 309.

Retained Authority and the Uchiha Coup

Despite Minato’s appointment, Hiruzen retains control of the ANBU and other core institutions. Fugaku identifies the Sealing Squad and Barrier Team among the departments still under the Third’s authority, leaving the Fourth Hokage with limited forces of his own 331 346.

Hiruzen helps defend Konoha during the Nine-Tails’ attack, leading ANBU in ranged bombardment while Minato attempts to move the beast out of the village. After Minato’s death, Hiruzen reclaims authority and overturns nearly all the Fourth’s new policies 367 378.

During the Uchiha coup, Hiruzen attacks Fugaku’s Susanoo with the Five Release: Great Combo Technique. Shisui reaches him and uses Kotoamatsukami to alter his will. Hiruzen immediately orders a ceasefire, attributes the disaster to Konoha’s prejudice against the Uchiha, resigns, and nominates Fugaku as Fifth Hokage 376.

Jiraiya questions whether he is under genjutsu, but Hiruzen insists that his decision is sincere. Hiashi’s Byakugan examination finds no abnormal chakra flow or lingering traces of interference 377 378.

Naruto’s Memories and Later Succession

Following Fugaku’s death, Hiruzen works with the Sealing Squad to reseal the Nine-Tails into Naruto. When Itachi and the Nine-Tails devastate Konoha, however, he orders Shinnosuke to evacuate civilians and organize defenses before taking the Adamantine Staff to the battlefield.
