Background / History

Surviving the Uchiha Massacre

Sasuke witnessed Itachi kill their parents and was subjected to his brother’s genjutsu. Itachi claimed that he had slaughtered the clan to test his limits and spared Sasuke as a future opponent. He urged Sasuke to survive through hatred, obtain the Mangekyō Sharingan, and eventually challenge him. These events continued to replay in Sasuke’s nightmares during his hospitalization 4 11.

After waking, Sasuke overheard nurses discussing another survivor, Uchiha Xia Yu. His initial relief turned to anger when he learned that Xia Yu was recruiting wives. Believing this disgraced their murdered clan, Sasuke left the hospital armed with a kunai and headed for the compound—only to find it crowded and livelier than before the massacre 11.

Agreement with Xia Yu

Sasuke confronted Xia Yu and threw a shuriken at his forehead after finding him touching a prospective bride’s chest. Akimi Inuzuka intercepted the attack. Xia Yu then persuaded Sasuke to hear his explanation privately 12.

While Sasuke considered revenge the clan’s greatest need, Xia Yu argued that its survival depended on restoring its population, economy, and compound. He offered to take responsibility for producing descendants so Sasuke could concentrate on training and avenging the dead. Sasuke apologized, began calling him “Brother Xia Yu,” and joined him in pledging to restore the Uchiha 13.

That day, Sasuke organized the recruitment queue and stayed up late helping assign homes to the 120 accepted women 13.

Supporting the Rebuilt Clan

Sasuke helped welcome guests to Xia Yu’s wedding and later waited at Konoha Hospital as the first children were born. Seeing the new generation gave him hope for the clan’s resurgence 16 17.

He took extended leave from the Ninja Academy to help care for the infants, accepting the role of their “little uncle.” When Akimi went into labor, he volunteered to oversee the children and calmly directed the nannies so Xia Yu could leave for the hospital 17.

As the compound recovered, Sasuke expressed appreciation for its warmth and offered to help Xia Yu find more wives. He also donated his entire share of the inherited Uchiha assets to support the growing clan, while continuing his own nightly training for revenge 29 30 40.

Protection and Hidden Threats

Sasuke’s survival was a condition of Itachi’s service as a spy. Hiruzen invoked that agreement when rejecting Danzō’s proposal to kill both remaining Uchiha. Later, however, Hiruzen and Danzō moved against Xia Yu; Danzō ordered Root to knock Sasuke unconscious before killing Xia Yu and taking the newborns 4 17.

Sasuke remained unaware of Itachi’s hidden motives because Xia Yu deliberately withheld the truth. Itachi, meanwhile, investigated whether Xia Yu could be trusted with his brother’s safety. Xia Yu assured him that Sasuke was living well 13 34 42 43.

Appearance

Personality

Sasuke is fiercely proud of his lineage. Immediately after the massacre, he treats outsiders entering the compound as intruders and regards Xia Yu’s womanizing as an insult to Uchiha dignity. His early outlook includes strong bloodline elitism and a belief that proud Uchiha men should not rely on women for protection 11 12 13.

His grief initially leaves him focused almost entirely on killing Itachi. Nevertheless, he can reconsider his judgments: once he understands Xia Yu’s rebuilding plan, he apologizes and actively contributes to it 13.

The restored household helps Sasuke regain some of his childhood cheerfulness. He enjoys a lively clan environment, becomes affectionate toward its newborns, and jokes with Xia Yu. Outside the compound, he still prefers solitude and finds the attention of girls exhausting 17 29 30.
