• Rank does not perfectly determine combat strength: Liu Zhiyi and Lu Kexi, collectively called the Peerless Duo, are said to surpass quite a few stewards despite holding chief captain rank 226.
• Song Anni’s standing: She is the youngest of the current chief captains and ranks firmly within their top five in overall strength 324.
• Ordinary staff: Most personnel Gu Qing encounters at headquarters are ordinary professionals performing administrative work. Lin Tianyang explains that Haicheng has fewer than a thousand people with supernatural abilities 67.

Membership Categories

• Supernatural Awakened: Members who possess awakened supernatural abilities. The organization gathers them for group testing and sends promising prospects to the Origin Land 54 335.
• Paranormal Contacts: Supernatural individuals whose capabilities develop through contact with supernatural items. Their strengths and weaknesses depend on the items encountered 54 76.
• Later awakening: Awakening after joining as a Paranormal Contact is rare. He Haikun states that he and Lu Kexi were the only such cases in nearly ten years at that point 81.
• Potential and prejudice: Paranormal Contacts are commonly viewed as having lower long-term ceilings than Awakened. Gu Qing’s achievements and Lu Kexi’s earlier rise challenge that assumption 140 164.

Admission and Training

1. Invitation or recommendation: Lin Tianyang recruits Gu Qing, while Gu Qing later recommends Xia Shuran and forwards her application to Jiang Wanqiao 54 106.
2. Recruitment testing: Candidates undergo aptitude and physical assessments. Named tests measure punching strength, running speed, vertical jump height, and reaction speed 67 71.

History and Major Operations

Early Investigations

Gu Qing first encounters Night Court personnel when two men in black arrive after a public security captain makes a call. The same organization later appears alongside police investigating the killings connected to the attack on Zhou Yuan. Lin Tianyang subsequently explains its duties and invites Gu Qing to join 34 53 54.

The black shadow incident introduces Gu Qing to Liu Zhiyi’s position within the organization. Her intervention, followed by the agents’ handling of the contaminated civilians, helps him decide to accept Lin Tianyang’s invitation 63 64.

Spiritual Energy Revival

The Court Master announces that Earth’s merging with the Origin Land will bring comprehensive spiritual energy revival. He warns that humans and other living things will evolve, identifies Haicheng as having Nanjiang Province’s highest spiritual energy concentration, and orders preparations. Veteran members deploy in groups while Gu Qing’s intake remains at headquarters for training 167 168.

Conflict with the Rat God Cult

The Monster Assault Team repeatedly disrupts the Rat God Cult, destroying dozens of hideouts over six months. The cult responds by planning retaliation, strengthening its poison, and considering an underground assault on headquarters 248 276 349.

Gu Qing uncovers two serious threats to the organization. A laboratory worker admits to infiltrating the Night Court two years earlier and falsifying vaccine research, leaving the supposedly successful Universal Antitoxin Vaccine ineffective against Rat Poison. Shortly afterward, Gu Qing and Deacon Tian discover a cult tunnel being dug toward headquarters 255 259.

The threat escalates when enhanced Rat Poison severely weakens Song Anni during a pursuit. After the cult leader gains further power, he orders his breakthrough concealed and assigns the Blue-Suited Man to retaliate. That follower targets promising young members, choosing Gu Qing and planning to kill his family first 275 276 321 339 349.

Gu Qing’s Rise

Gu Qing’s victories attract increasing attention despite his classification as a Paranormal Contact. His killing of the ninth-order Qingyu earns an E-rank reward, while his performances against Chen Yun and Zhang Zhibei during deputy captain selection astonish both spectators and senior officials 140 141 294 308.

After reaching the selection finals, he secures a deputy captain position, agrees to join Song Anni’s Monster Assault Team, and is formally promoted by Deacon Tian 321 335 339.

Origin Land Foothold

Elder Liang reports that the Night Court has occupied a resource-rich mountain forest and established a base in the Origin Land. He Haikun credits him with accomplishing this in less than five years of overseeing operations there 323.

Investigation of Gu Qing’s Backing

Elder Liang orders Deacon He to follow Gu Qing and investigate the expert believed to support him. Xia Wuyuan discovers the surveillance, defeats Deacon He, and then overwhelms Elder Liang when he arrives. He spares Liang because both Xia Shuran and Gu Qing belong to the Night Court 361 362.

Liang subsequently seeks cooperation with Xia Wuyuan through the two younger members, offering them the organization’s highest cultivation priority if they succeed. Xia Wuyuan declines, stating that he has no plans to cooperate for the time being 363.

External Relations and Internal Threats

• Public security authorities — Operational partners who coordinate with Night Court agents during supernatural investigations and emergencies 34 53 183.
• Rat God Cult — A major enemy responsible for laboratory infiltration, vaccine sabotage, underground preparations against headquarters, and attacks on developing talent 255 259 349.
• Fox Woman Clan — Maintains a concealed intelligence channel through He Haikun. The clan helped him awaken using precious supernatural resources and planted him within the Night Court as its eyes and ears 168.
• He Haikun — A deputy captain whose loyalty is compromised. He attempts to manipulate Gu Qing with a fabricated double-agent story while seeking to escape the Fox Woman Clan’s control 168 298 300.
• Xia Wuyuan — A powerful independent martial artist whom the organization unsuccessfully approaches for cooperation after its surveillance operation is exposed 361 362 363.
• Supposed Fox Clan alliance — The Rat God Cult suspects cooperation between the Night Court and Fox Woman Clan after Gu Qing rescues two Fox Women. This is a misunderstanding, not a confirmed organizational alliance 319 320 321.
