Background / History

Tsunade was born and raised in Konoha and became one of its legendary Sannin. During the Second Shinobi World War, she and her fellow Sannin fought on the front lines alongside figures such as Hatake Sakumo. Her Senju ancestry and wartime reputation made her a major source of confidence for the village 18 24 39.

The successive battlefield deaths of her younger brother, Nawaki, and her lover, Dan Katō, contributed to her departure from Konoha. She also distrusted Hiruzen Sarutobi’s claim that the Senju had voluntarily abandoned their surname and integrated into the village. After the Second Shinobi World War, she left with Shizune and remained away for years 16 24.

Without mission commissions, Tsunade exhausted her savings through lavish spending and habitual gambling losses. Shortly before Xuanye approached her, she considered borrowing from underground lenders and using a changed appearance to evade repayment if she lost 16.

Personality

Tsunade is blunt, quick-tempered, and decisive. She demands a direct explanation when Xuanye approaches her, reacts violently when she believes he is desecrating Nawaki’s soul, and accepts the medical captaincy without hesitation once she makes up her mind. She clearly distinguishes gratitude from resentment, openly acknowledging the enormous favor of her brother’s resurrection 16 17.

Gambling and drinking are prominent indulgences. She prefers drinking directly from a wine jar rather than sipping from a small cup, and a guaranteed gambling allowance strongly appeals to her despite her reluctance to return to Konoha 16.

Her contempt for Konoha’s leadership does not erase her attachment to the village. She refuses to help destroy Konoha or become a pawn in a factional struggle. Although she initially accepts a nominal medical post, she grows genuinely protective of the Police Force members and willingly provides battlefield support when they are endangered 17 18 40 41.

Recruitment in Tanzaku Town

Xuanye travels to Tanzaku Town with Uzuki Yugao specifically to recruit Tsunade for the expanding Military Police Force. His initial offer is a nominal position with eight million ryō in free gambling chips every day. Although tempted, Tsunade hesitates because accepting would require returning to Konoha 15 16.

Xuanye then offers her the opportunity to question Nawaki about his suspicious death. Tsunade initially mistakes his use of Impure World Reincarnation for an attempt to enslave her brother’s soul. Instead, Xuanye uses Reincarnation Unsealing to restore Nawaki to genuine life, and the siblings tearfully reunite 16 17.

Return to Konoha

Tsunade accepts command of the new Medical Squad, with a fixed monthly salary in addition to the gambling allowance. Her duties are primarily organizational and instructional rather than routine personal treatment. She explicitly warns Xuanye against using her in a political struggle against Konoha’s leadership 17.

Her principal reason for returning is to investigate Nawaki’s death. Orochimaru’s original report had been evasive, and Nawaki’s account indicates that his squad was lured into an ambush and that someone dragged him into the exploding tags. Before entering the village, Tsunade disguises him; Xuanye subsequently entrusts her with delivering his captain’s token to mobilize the Police Force against intruders 17 18.

Public Reception and Concealed Identity

Konoha celebrates Tsunade’s return as a hopeful sign for the village. Hiruzen, however, regards her prestige and qualifications as a threat to his continued position as Hokage. Tsunade rejects his public invitation to reconnect as teacher and student, citing her obligation to report to Police Force work on time 24.

To conceal his identity during registration, Nawaki claims to be Tsunade and Xuanye’s illegitimate son. Tsunade reluctantly plays along in Hiruzen’s presence while Xuanye repeatedly exploits the story to tease her. Hiruzen later recognizes that the boy cannot plausibly be their biological child 25 26.

Treatment of the Fourth Raikage

After Xuanye cripples the Fourth Raikage, Tsunade stabilizes the prisoner and explains that he will never regain his peak fighting strength. Annoyed at losing her afternoon rest to overtime, she demands additional pay. Xuanye offers her one-third of the Raikage’s follow-up treatment fees, which she accepts 33.

Root Base Operation

Tsunade accompanies the Police Force during its operation against Root. She initially doubts whether Might Guy can defeat Shisui and becomes concerned when Shisui manifests Susanoo. Xuanye’s composure reassures her, while her own thoughts reveal that she has grown attached to the officers and does not want to see them—or their captain—defeated 39 40.

She summons Katsuyu to treat the Police Force throughout the battle. This support sustains the officers fighting Root’s operatives while Guy opens the Seventh Gate and defeats Shisui 41.

Relationships

• Senju Nawaki — Younger brother. His death is her deepest emotional wound; his resurrection motivates her return to Konoha and renewed investigation into his death 16 17 18.
