Organization and Leadership

Political Influence

  • Capital City’s four great clans—the Zhao, Su, Tuoba, and Wang clans—exercise substantial influence over both the Paranormal Bureau and the Demon Suppression Bureau 14.
  • Official protection has limits: Su Qianxue offers Lin Jin protection through the Bureau while acknowledging that it cannot match the great clans’ power 14.

Duties and Regulations

  • Voluntary recruitment: Joining is not compulsory. Registered awakeners who do not use their abilities to commit crimes generally face little interference in their private lives 3.
  • Incident response: Agents investigate abnormal energy readings, identify entities, eliminate threats, and rescue victims 3 8.
  • Intelligence work: The Bureau maintains entity records, classified organizational files, surveillance material, and individual threat assessments 4 10 13.
  • Disaster recovery: Personnel search for survivors, establish shelters, move supplies, repair buildings, reassure civilians, and submit mission reports 28 29.
  • Public information: The Bureau neither heavily publicizes awakeners nor deliberately suppresses knowledge of their existence 11.

Recruitment and Benefits

Su Qianxue offers recruits systematic cultivation guidance, official status, and steady compensation. Strong applicants can enter combat teams directly; she offers Lin Jin Origin Energy Realm benefits based on his demonstrated strength 3.

The Bureau divides supernatural entities into eight ranks. The following standards are explained by Su Qianxue; SSS-rank remains speculative at that point 3.

Resources and Operational Limits

Detection and Intelligence

  • Portable Detectors track anomalous energy, helping squads locate entities and estimate threat levels 8 19.
  • Command-center monitoring displays paranormal energy signals across Jiangcheng and allows staff to review surveillance footage 21.
  • Entity reference material includes the Eerie Records Manual and files on demonic beasts 4 15.
  • Classified archives contain decades of investigation into Dark Moon, although its leader’s identity, age, and strength remain unknown 13.

Medical Support

  • Jiangcheng’s medical center treats agents injured during paranormal operations 5.
  • Psychic specialists are not always available: the strongest specialist contacted after the Nightmare incident is away handling an A-rank Weird Domain and cannot return for at least a week 6.
  • Some effects resist ordinary treatment: forcibly removing Nightmare’s energy risks irreversible mental damage, prompting Su Qianxue to seek Lin Jin’s help 5 6.

Combat Capacity

  • Source Energy Stage fighters can hold team-leader-level responsibilities 12.
  • Jiangcheng suffers personnel shortages before Dark Moon’s mass ritual begins 19.
  • An S-rank Weird Domain exceeds the branch’s available strength: such a disaster requires multiple Domain Realm experts, while Jiangcheng has only Director Chen Zhenshan 24.
  • The Demon Suppression Bureau has greater resources and a broader operational scope than the Paranormal Bureau 29 39.

Major Operations

Nightmare Investigation

Su Qianxue personally leads an investigation into an unusual B-rank Nightmare in Jiangcheng’s abandoned industrial zone. She destroys it with Spatial Compression, but Zhao Gang and Li Wei remain trapped in its illusions 4 5.

With the victims expected to survive no more than three days and suitable psychic support unavailable, Su Qianxue hires Lin Jin. His Sharingan frees both agents, establishing a working relationship between him and the Bureau 5 6 7.

Jiangcheng No. 3 Middle School

Team C investigates four missing students and locates a C-rank Mirror Demon. Zhou Yan destroys it with Majestic Destroyer Flame, and the squad rescues the students 8 9.

Dark Moon member Old Nine retaliates by sending a B-rank Skin-Shedding Ghost against the squad. Lin Jin answers Zhou Yan’s emergency signal and kills it with Amaterasu after Sun Hao is injured 9 10.

Dark Moon’s Jiangcheng Ritual

Dark Moon initiates a sacrificial formation at twelve locations, producing eight B-rank and four A-rank threats. Director Chen Zhenshan orders agents to hold their positions despite reinforcements being an hour away and the ritual needing only twenty minutes to finish 21.

Lin Jin and his shadow clones eliminate the sacrificial-site entities and rescue Bureau personnel, including Fang Rou and Su Qianxue. When an S-rank Weird Domain opens and at least thirty entrances release entities across the city, Bureau squads protect civilians while Lin Jin deploys twenty clones to contain the outbreak 22 23 24.

After Lin Jin destroys the S-rank entity and its domain, the Bureau conducts overnight rescue and cleanup work. Its records recognize him as Jiangcheng’s guardian, and the Bureau and municipal authorities jointly reward him with a villa and fifty million 28 29.

Headquarters Review

Senior officials review Lin Jin’s battle record and consider whether his strength reaches the Transcendent Stage. Deputy Director Zhou Jianguo subsequently orders improved benefits and instructs the Bureau not to offend him 31 32.

Qingjiang Support Mission

Team C deploys to support an investigation into a possible A-rank Weird in Qingjiang City. During the mission, a Dark Moon attacker defeats the squad and abducts Zhou Yan to lure Lin Jin into a trap 39 47.

External Relationships

  • Lin Jin — Independent paid collaborator, not a Bureau member. His file changes from an uncertain threat assessment recommending continued contact without antagonism to recognition as Jiangcheng’s guardian 3 10 29.
  • Demon Suppression Bureau — Separate official organization with differing duties and broader nationwide responsibilities. Its reinforcements arrive too late for the Jiangcheng battle; Lin Jin later becomes its specially appointed consultant rather than joining the Paranormal Bureau 14 29 30.
  • Dark Moon Organization — Hostile awakener organization investigated for cultivating entities and conducting human sacrifices. Its operations repeatedly target Bureau squads and Jiangcheng itself 9 13 21 47.
  • Capital City’s great clans — Powerful political influences within the Bureau. Su Qianxue’s position as a Su Clan descendant brings clan affairs directly into the Jiangcheng office when Zhao Cheng visits on Zhao Ming’s behalf 14 18 19.
