Power Progression

Huang Xiao’s cultivation realm frequently trails his combat strength. Temporary boosts and technique milestones are identified separately below.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Unranked beginner 1 350 Begins as a physically helpless scholar; Zhao Xin'er later recalls that he was unranked two years before their reunion.
First-rate lower grade; middle section of the Everlasting Spring Art 111 Two years of cultivation bring him to the minimum strength needed to practice the Blazing Yang Palm and Air-Piercing Finger.
Rejuvenation; Everlasting Spring Ageless True Qi 188 Refines the Heavenly Yin Silkworm’s cold energy into a smaller but stronger reserve of true qi. His Northern Darkness Absorption Method also becomes easier to use.
First-rate middle grade, before losing his power 227 Identified retrospectively as his previous peak when he tests the newly learned Heavenly Demon Skill.
Initial mastery of the Heavenly Demon Skill 227 After becoming temporarily powerless, produces a small quantity of heavenly demon true qi. One palm strike already reaches roughly thirty percent of his former peak strength.
Heavenly Demon Skill, first level; pinnacle of first-rate middle grade 235 Following rejuvenation and recovery, his strength exceeds its former level by more than half.
Heavenly Demon Skill, third level 263 Breaks through overnight with the Demon-Attracting Formula. Heavenly demon true qi surpasses his everlasting spring ageless true qi in both power and quantity.
Unspecified breakthrough under pursuit 299 302 Credits the Black-Robed Envoy’s pursuit with forcing a life-and-death breakthrough; subsequently defeats the envoy.
Improved Lingbo Ethereal Steps and Blazing Yang Palm 396 Island training, Zhao Yunhui’s guidance, and the Sui Emperor Chapter strengthen his movement and palm techniques. His palm force can match his full Heavenly Demon Subduing Tiger Fist from two months earlier.
Heavenly Demon Subduing Tiger Fist, Fourth Stage of Force 416 Becomes a major source of confidence when combined with heavenly demon true qi.
Peak Realm 587 True qi begins replenishing itself without deliberate circulation. Before this breakthrough, his extraordinary arts had already given him Mid Peerless combat strength.
Low Peak cultivation; self-assessed upper peerless combat strength 601 Explicitly distinguishes his actual realm from his fighting power. Cold Jade has assisted his progress.
Heavenly Demon Skill, fifth layer 653 Breaks through in the instant before Cao Wuxin’s palm lands, gaining control over a powerful surge of true qi.
Heavenly Demon Skill, ninth stage 884 1326 Survives a near-fatal loss of control and regains command of his ferocious heavenly demon true qi. The ninth stage is later confirmed as his current limit.
Half-Step Martial Realm 998 Completes the reconstruction of his meridians and dantian while fighting Tuoba Ao. Gains control of Heaven and Earth Momentum within roughly one hundred feet.
Temporary Void Martial-level strength 1265 Evil qi stimulates his power enough to command some Heaven and Earth Momentum; this is not a permanent realm breakthrough.
Third rejuvenation of the second realm 1282 Gains stronger, more refined true qi and can again fight without the Demon-Ghost Blood Curse’s restrictions. His strength approaches the Void Martial Realm, but his insight remains insufficient.
Heavenly Demon Demon Saber Techniques, Fifth Form 1356 1479 Gains the key insight while studying Yao Qiu’s Eighth Sword; later demonstrably uses the form against Jia Kong.
Void Martial Realm 1553 Breaks through without forcing the process. His command of Heaven and Earth Momentum expands beyond his room into the courtyard.
Heavenly Demon Demon Saber Techniques, Sixth Form 1636 Demonstrates the form against a Heavenly Evil Sect fighter, though it does not finish the opponent.
Heavenly Demon Skill, tenth stage; Martial Realm 1871 Advances from the Void Martial Realm and spends a day consolidating his greatly increased true qi and control of Heaven and Earth Momentum.
Heavenly Demon Disintegration, second stage 1931 1934 Combined with his other arts, allows him to exchange comparable blows with the stronger Enlightenment Realm expert Zhen Heng.
Enlightenment Realm 2147 Confirmed during his attack on Zhou Daohang, only months after reaching the Martial Realm.
Improved divine-sense and true-qi refinement 2248 Learns to combine external sword intent with internally imitated forces, using Heart Fire and the Ten Thousand Demons Skill.
Heavenly Demon Disintegration, third layer 2353 Uses it with Supreme Demonic Qi against Chao Hun; the encounter still leaves him badly wounded, with severed meridians.
Heavenly Demon Skill, twelfth stage; Dao Realm 2529 Reaches full mastery of the skill and an actual Dao Realm breakthrough, rather than merely possessing comparable combat strength.
Ice Chamber enhancement; Void Realm late-stage strength 2596 2601 2610 Kui Yong’s formation, essence blood, and indestructible supreme demonic qi transform his body and widen his meridians. His new strength supports rapid mastery of the Supreme Demonic Art and Supreme Demon Saber Technique. Huo Lian assesses him at the Void Realm Late Stage.
Blood God Conversion Great Method breakthrough 2944 Converts absorbed essence blood into divine-sense power. Under extreme strain, the previously temporary enhancement becomes permanent.
Void Realm Peak baseline; Upper Ancient Realm Peak with forbidden arts 2970 Kui Yong identifies the distinction during their battle. Repeated forbidden-art activation allows Huang Xiao to cross an entire major realm in combat strength.
Further breakthrough, realm unspecified 3176 His improved strength lets him fight Hu Pursuing Wind and Yao Fengrong nearly evenly despite their forbidden arts.
Ancient Realm Early Stage combat strength, without reaching the Ancient Realm 3245 Zhao Wei recognizes that Huang Xiao’s displayed strength exceeds his actual cultivation realm.
Heavenly Demon Disintegration, twelfth stage 3307 Increasing vitality makes this stage usable; he also believes he can now handle Wang Mengjiao without the Bronze Key.

Background / History

Scholar and Early Martial Career

Huang Xiao grew up with an elderly couple who treated him as their son. Although neighbors questioned his parentage because he resembled neither of them, he initially dismissed the gossip. His adoptive parents died when he was fourteen, leaving farmland that he eventually sold to finance his examination studies 1.

At sixteen, he failed the provincial examination. His servant stole his remaining silver, and bandits subsequently abducted him to their stronghold. There, Liu Qiang’s daughter asked him to teach her to read. He later learned that the stronghold had been massacred by Fierce Tiger Sect disciples employed by the Wang Family 1 472.

He entered martial cultivation through Green Ox Gate and later became its sect leader. As a Poison God Valley disciple, he benefited from frequent sparring and instruction by experienced fellow disciples and martial uncles. His service in the Six Gates began with reserve-constable status and eventually brought him the position of Yellow Gate Arrest Sage 60 130 200 640.

Heavenly Yin Silkworm Incident

The Heavenly Yin Silkworm drove corrosive cold poison into Huang Xiao’s meridians and dantian, leaving injuries that Wang Yuantu considered incurable. Xu Yan frightened the creature back into Ten-Thousand Poisons Lake before collapsing, and the Valley Master arrived as Huang Xiao faced death 119.

He survived the incident; later cultivation transformed the silkworm’s cold energy into Everlasting Spring Ageless True Qi. Huang Xiao also suspected that its devouring ability had become incorporated into his Northern Darkness Absorption Method, although he could not confirm this 188.

Imperial Service and the Zhao Sisters

Huang Xiao’s growing strength made him valuable to the Great Song court. He accompanied Zhao Yuankan to Khitan, while Zhao Guangyi privately sought to investigate his origins. His appointment as Arrest Sage was unprecedented at his age, though it also resulted from a compromise between Huang Qitao and the court 525 684.

His desire to become worthy of Zhao Xin'er helped drive his ambitions. While protecting her elder sister, Zhao Yunhui, he refused to let Long Feng reach her departing boat. Huang Xiao and Zhao Yunhui subsequently spent more than two months stranded together, developing an intimate attachment that left him conflicted because of his feelings for Xin'er 359 386 395 416.

Discovery of His Family

Jiang Ying identified Huang Xiao through his inherited Jade Thumb Ring and revealed that the couple who raised him were adoptive parents. Jiang Ying had orders to protect him secretly and intervene only when his life was endangered, but could not disclose his birth parents’ identities 438.

Ling Tianya later explained that Huang Xiao was his grandson. During political turmoil in Khitan, Huang Xiao’s parents had entrusted him to a family in Huang Family Village to preserve their bloodline. The adoptive family’s subsequent move to Liu Family Village frustrated the search for him for years 627.

The revelation became entangled with violence: Ling Tianya claimed responsibility for killing Mu Yi, Xu Yan Yun, and Li Cong, driving Huang Xiao into a demonic rage. Huang Xiao fled and gravely injured Xiao Yan when she tried to help him. He later reunited with his birth parents in Khitan 651 772.

Sect Leadership and Marriage

Huang Xiao became the Heavenly Demon Sect Master and a figure whom ordinary Jianghu practitioners hesitated to approach. His relationship with You Lian'er was closely tied to the complementary cultivation methods of the Heavenly Demon Sect and the You Family 590 724.

His grand wedding included Great Song’s two princesses and Xiao Yan, whose standing in Khitan was comparable to or greater than that of a princess. He and his four wives also founded the Free and Easy Sect; he generally left its management to them 1036 1576.

The Martial World

Entering the Martial World placed Huang Xiao among experts far stronger than those he had faced in Great Song. His immediate priorities became survival, improving his saber techniques, and concealing his identity. The Demon-Ghost Blood Curse further restricted his usable strength until it was dispelled 1129 1233 1282.

Knowledge of Transcendent Immortal Swordsmanship led others to regard him as Li Bai’s successor. That protection became dangerous once Li Bai’s actual successor appeared. Huang Xiao therefore relied on disguises while concealing his Great Song origins even from friends 1325 1337 1341.

Li Bai eventually rescued him from Heavenly Evil Sect pursuers and revealed that his patriarch, Huo Lian, had been the Previous Demon Hall Master. Huang Xiao later became Heavenly Demon Hall’s Hall Master Candidate, provoking repeated attempts by the Pang Family to eliminate him, and ultimately rose to become the current Demon Hall Master 1636 2112 2148 2771.

Kui Yong and the Ancient World

Kui Yong’s Ice Chamber process dramatically strengthened Huang Xiao, but the two later fought as enemies. During their confrontation, Huang Xiao permanently strengthened his divine sense through the Blood God Conversion Great Method and drew Kui Yong away from his badly wounded allies. Repeated forbidden arts let him contend far above his baseline realm, at devastating physical cost 2596 2944 2969 2970 2974.

In the Ancient World, his connection to Kui Yong’s cultivation methods continued to attract hostility. He used the Bronze Key to immobilize Hu Pursuing Wind for Huo Lian to kill, and later disclosed his Martial World origins to the Wood Demon General when concealment threatened his life 3176 3487.

In the latest provided encounter, Jiang Hengdao attempts to seize his Longevity True Qi. Huang Xiao resists with Dantian as the Sea and threatens to exhaust the true qi rather than let Jiang claim it 3795.

Appearance

  • Family resemblance: Looks almost nothing like his adoptive parents, but strongly resembles his birth father. His father’s facial scar is the main visible difference noted at their reunion 438 772.
  • Cultivation-induced changes: Rejuvenation can drastically reduce his apparent age; at one point, he has the body of a three- or four-year-old while retaining an adult mind 1667.
  • Disguises: Can transform his youthful appearance into markedly different, rough-featured middle-aged faces and alter his voice to match an assumed identity 1239 1308 1385.

Personality

Huang Xiao begins as a frightened but outspoken scholar, condemning the bandits who abduct him despite his helplessness. His scholarly upbringing does not make him rigid: he later uses weapons, deception, and numerical advantages whenever they offer the safest way to win 1 382 410 770.

He takes obligations seriously. Protecting Zhao Yunhui means fulfilling an assignment and safeguarding Zhao Xin'er’s sister, so he risks his life rather than retreat. His concern also extends beyond personal loyalties: after reuniting with his parents, he argues that war chiefly harms ordinary people 386 772.

His willingness to help is tempered by caution. He hesitates to rescue an unidentified fugitive in case the man is a villain, distrusts self-proclaimed righteous practitioners who pursue their own interests, and refuses unnecessary one-on-one risks. Against persistent enemies, however, he can be ruthless, attacking rather than allowing them to leave promising revenge 190 295 770 854.

Demonic cultivation repeatedly threatens his self-control. His near-murder of Xu Wuyu and attack on Xiao Yan contrast with his calmer judgment, while separation from his wives, family, and old friends leaves him profoundly lonely in the Martial World 506 507 651 1337.

Abilities & Skills

Heavenly Demon Skill

A domineering cultivation method that produces heavenly demon true qi and supplies the foundation for his major demonic techniques 227 263.

  • Greatly strengthens the Heavenly Demon Subduing Tiger Fist and Heavenly Demon Demon Saber Techniques 263 1125.
  • Reaches full mastery at the twelfth stage 2529.
  • Carries risks of cultivation deviation and demonic madness; the You Family’s cultivation method complements it 257 506 590.
  • Can be concealed by returning its true qi to his dantian and transforming it into Northern Darkness True Qi 263 283.

Everlasting Spring and Rejuvenation Arts

His Everlasting Spring cultivation develops into rejuvenation-based arts whose true qi excels at healing and restoring internal power 188 416 587.

  • Repairs damage that would otherwise make repeated high-output attacks unsafe for his meridians 297.
  • Helps him survive repeated blows from a stronger assassin 257.
  • Rejuvenation initially leaves him extremely weak; the recovery schedule changes with successive rejuvenations 188.
  • Later regenerative power allows him to risk injury in exchanges, provided an opponent does not kill him outright 1931.

Northern Darkness Absorption and Devouring

Huang Xiao comprehends the Northern Darkness Absorption Method himself, using it to absorb an opponent’s power or convert invading internal power to his own use 416.

  • Earlier demonstrates power absorption through Power-Devouring Poison Force 97 257.
  • Neutralizes and assimilates Pang Yi’s invading god-burying true qi 1817.
  • Works alongside the healing effects of everlasting spring ageless true qi; outright rupture of his meridians remains dangerous 416.
  • Is not safe against every energy: Tuoba Ao’s corrosive true qi damages his meridians and dantian during absorption 1003.
  • Later uses Devouring to absorb essence blood for the Blood God Conversion Great Method 2944.

Saber Techniques

His principal saber discipline is the Heavenly Demon Demon Saber Techniques, later supplemented by the Supreme Demon Saber Technique 1326 2601.

  • The Fifth Form represents a qualitative increase over the preceding forms 1326 1329.
  • Combines sound attacks with saber strikes to disrupt an enemy’s defense before killing or maiming them 1509.
  • Initially struggles to sustain the Seventh Form even after reaching the Martial Realm 1876.
  • Later comprehension of the Ultimate of the Dao strengthens his saber force and other martial techniques 3164.

Fist, Palm, Finger, and Sword Arts

  • Heavenly Demon Subduing Tiger Fist: Becomes his strongest move after his third-level Heavenly Demon Skill breakthrough; later reaches the Fourth Stage of Force 263 416.
  • Blazing Yang Palm: An early supreme art substantially strengthened through the Sui Emperor Chapter 111 396.
  • Air-Piercing Finger: Learned from the Hidden Arts Chamber once his power reaches the required threshold 111.
  • Plum-Searching-in-the-Snow Palm: A self-created palm art used to suppress Tuoba Ao’s shifting techniques 1003.
  • Swordsmanship: Knows Taixuan Sword Swordsmanship, Dugu Sheng’s modified version, and intricate Heavenly Demon Sect sword arts. He also develops moves for countering other techniques 1301 1636.
  • Nine-Turn Heaven and Earth: Redirects Tuoba Ao’s force, creating an opportunity to retreat 1003.

Movement and Formations

  • Snake-Traveling Tiny Steps: An early evasion art that benefits from his study of Eight Trigrams Footwork 111 257.
  • Lingbo Ethereal Steps: Perfected with Zhao Yunhui’s help; supports escape, interception, and elusive combat movement 416 729 1934.
  • Formation use: Initially struggles to understand formations and cannot learn Eight Trigrams Footwork 111.
  • Aerial footing: Later creates formations beneath his feet to move through the air, surprising experienced observers 2577.

Sound Arts

  • Heavenly Demon Dragon Roar: Initially hampered by his limited musical proficiency; later breaks Yong Xing’s Rebirth Mantra 416 1509.
  • Sound Art Qi Control: Can increase his true qi’s strength fourfold by the period of Huo Lian’s training; fivefold remains a goal at that point 1931.
  • Heavenly Demon Soul-Destroying Sound: With its matching flute, becomes powerful enough that Huang Xiao judges even upper-middle-tier Entering Dao Realm experts unable to withstand it 2154.
  • Combat disruption: Sonic attacks can destabilize an enemy’s saber force and open them to a finishing strike 1509.

Heavenly Demon Disintegration

A forbidden art that forcibly increases his power, allowing him to fight opponents above his own cultivation realm 1233 1930.

  • Reaches the second, third, and eventually twelfth stages 1934 2353 3307.
  • Repeated activation lets his Void Realm Peak baseline reach Upper Ancient Realm Peak combat strength against Kui Yong 2970.
  • Depends heavily on his vitality and recovery; severe aftereffects can leave him nearly powerless and close to exhausting his life force 3307 3408.

Divine Sense and Blood God Conversion

  • Uses divine-sense assaults alongside physical attacks, including in his killing of Zhou Daohang 2148.
  • Converts absorbed essence blood into a temporary divine-sense enhancement through the Blood God Conversion Great Method 2944.
  • Breaks through under pressure against Kui Yong, permanently retaining the enhanced divine-sense strength 2944.

Concealment and Internal Refinement

  • Ten Thousand Demons Formless Art: Conceals and imitates auras, supporting physical disguises and hiding the severity of his injuries 1239 1479.
  • Limits of concealment: A sufficiently powerful Dao Realm expert sees through both his disguise and concealed aura 2043.
  • Mental cultivation: Learns a calming method devised by Qingfeng from an incomplete text, later associated with the Upper Clarity Heart Scripture 1898.
  • Heart Fire: Refines true qi and can imitate external sword intent to improve the refinement process 2248.
  • Longevity Chapter: An incomplete cultivation method connected to the Longevity Daoist; knowledge of it earns him special consideration from Xuan Yuanxiang 3048.
  • Dantian as the Sea: Stabilizes his Longevity True Qi against Jiang Hengdao’s attempt to devour it 3795.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Godslayer: A small dagger sharp enough to sever quality weapons. Huang Xiao also observes that it appears capable of breaking through internal force 152 382.
  • Minghong Saber: A powerful broken saber whose restoration interests him. He later continues using it against Kui Yong and in the Ancient World 1492 2221 2969 3164.
  • Imitation Saber: Used for the Heavenly Demon Demon Saber Techniques. Li Bai explicitly distinguishes it from the real Minghong Saber; a later example is described as Dao Realm-level 1636 2045.
  • Jade Thumb Ring: Inherited from his adoptive parents and used to establish his identity. Huang San’s theft and pawning of it inadvertently led searchers to him 32 438.
  • Phoenix Blood: Taken in an attempt to remove the Demon-Ghost Blood Curse. Its energy rapidly heals injuries, but the Masked Old Man’s internal power initially prevents it from reaching the curse 1270.
  • Bronze Key: Can suppress Hu Pursuing Wind after absorbing his blood. Huang Xiao learns about its function from a paper in Zhuo Mengshen’s secret chamber 3176.
  • Cold Jade Key: Its chilling effect stiffens Meng Li’s sword arm, creating the opening for a fatal saber strike 3408.
  • Heavenly Demon Soul-Destroying Flute: Greatly strengthens his sound art. He also experiments with the Heavenly Demon Soul-Severing Zither despite limited proficiency 2154.
