"Agreed? Agreed to what?" Han Shuo froze and asked in confusion.
"To you and me, of course!" Emily exclaimed cheerfully, then explained, "I told Phoebe everything about us, especially how my status meant I couldn't appear openly with you. I really emphasized that part, and also how my husband suddenly died on the battlefield just after I married into the Betridge Family. After hearing me out, Phoebe even spent quite a while comforting me!"
Han Shuo was taken aback. He suddenly felt that Phoebe really was reasonable after all. Still, Emily had spent so long in Dark Curtain that she was indeed very clever. Winning Phoebe's acceptance of her position with a conversation was proof enough of her ability.
Only after hearing Emily's explanation did Han Shuo truly relax. He smiled, kissed her lightly, and said, "Emily, you're really capable."
"All right, all right, stop sweet-talking me." Emily gave Han Shuo a delighted push before saying, "It's getting late. You shouldn't stay here. I still need to go and pay my respects to Father."
Hearing Emily mention Old Hahn, the head of the Betridge Family, Han Shuo thought for a moment before asking, "By the way, which prince does Hahn favor?"
"I don't know. Perhaps because Father has been out of the military for so long, he hasn't appeared in the empire's military or political circles while all these undercurrents have been stirring. He hasn't discussed the princes with me, either." Seeing that Han Shuo had turned to serious matters, Emily answered with a frown.
After a moment of silence, Han Shuo told Emily, "If Old Hahn brings this up, or intends to lean toward any side, you'd best advise him not to act rashly over the next few days, lest he lead the Betridge Family down the wrong path."
