Above immortality lay transcendence. Patrick and Medivh were both beings who possessed transcendent power, and they saw the world differently from others.
Medivh also agreed that Azeroth was not safe. After all, having just experienced the battle in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, he had gained a profound understanding of the Old Gods' power, as well as their endless, unexpected schemes.
The Old Gods had already planted a nail in Stormwind City. No one knew when the Old Gods' spell inscription on Anduin would activate, and Medivh dared not gamble. He could not imagine what consequences Stormwind City would face once the Old Gods made use of that nail.
The Old Gods hidden deep underground would not spare the Kingdom of Stormwind, nor would there be another bizarre stroke of luck like when Gul'dan had led the three Great Clans in a panicked retreat during the Horde's assault on Lordaeron City, turning Lordaeron's peril into safety. When Medivh learned that Patrick intended to build a new Dark Portal, his first thought was to stop him at all costs. The Dark Portal had been a grave mistake Medivh had made, and he would never allow that mistake to be repeated and Azeroth to suffer a second time.
But when Patrick conveyed his thoughts to Medivh, Medivh agreed with him almost immediately. He thought the same way Patrick did: the Kingdom of Stormwind's future was already uncertain, and he had to leave it a way out.
Medivh felt a deep sense of helplessness regarding Prince Anduin. As one of the most accomplished archmages in the entire world,
