Background / History
Origins and Maturation
Aman’Thul was the first Titan, born from a planet after an unknown span of the universe’s history. Titans develop from World-Souls, and their maturation requires immense quantities of energy over extraordinarily long periods. Their numbers are consequently very small 518 580.
Aman’Thul searches planets for World-Souls that can become new members of his kind. Upon discovering the incomplete soul within Azeroth, the Pantheon established facilities to nurture her into the Titan Elune. Norgannon estimated that she required a little over a million years to develop a body capable of existing materially in the void 50 518.
A Titan’s birth can destroy its host planet, breaking it like an eggshell and killing its inhabitants. Patrick therefore sought another world in which to rebuild Elune’s body without sacrificing Azeroth’s civilizations 643.
Shaping Azeroth
The Titans did not originate all life on Azeroth: trolls and insects already inhabited the planet before their intervention. Their work instead established the planetary framework intended to protect and nourish Elune, including the Well of Eternity and Ley Line System 16 81.
Their laboratories studied the development of life. Norgannon described the creation of the Earthen through successive experiments in Uldaman, including an early failed generation that mutated into Troggs 49.
When the Pantheon returned to Azeroth, it found its laboratories infected by the Old Gods. The Titans narrowly defeated their enemies while the Old Gods were fighting among themselves, sealed them beneath the surface, and banished the chaotic elementals to the Elemental Plane 55 81 518.
The Titans left facilities and appointed Guardians to oversee Azeroth. They also granted portions of their powers to the five Dragon Aspects, departing once the dragons were prepared to protect the world 55.
Sargeras’s Campaign
Sargeras was the Pantheon’s strongest combatant, and most Old Gods were no match for him individually. According to the memories Aman’Thul left Elune, his break with the Pantheon arose from disagreement over how to end the Old God threat 535.
Sargeras concluded that destroying every planet would eliminate the worlds the Old Gods used to increase their numbers and strength. He intended to destroy those planets and then eradicate the Old Gods, ending the need to fight them repeatedly 535.
Decline of Azeroth’s Systems
The destruction of the original Well of Eternity deprived Titan facilities of their principal energy supply. The Old Gods’ seals loosened, the Ley Line Defense System weakened, and Titan equipment ceased functioning. Some Titan-forged entered dormancy to endure the crisis 44.
The Old Gods exploited these failures through corruption and the Curse of Flesh. Yogg-Saron also discovered that Ulduar’s connection to the underground prison provided a route through which his influence could reach its jailers 44 535.
Appearance
Titans possess metallic bodies, though their individual manifestations differ greatly in size and presentation 49 732.
- Norgannon: A platinum-skinned male with a long beard, hooded cloak, and belted tunic. Arcane power shines across his body, and his eyes convey wisdom 49 681.
- Aman’Thul: An enormous male Aesir Titan with platinum skin, long hair, a waist-length beard, and yellow eyes. He carries a staff bearing a lightning emblem, with electrical currents coiling around its shaft 732.
- Elune: Appears above the Maelstrom as a gigantic female Titan, accompanied by the Night Elves’ symbol of the Moon Goddess 775.

Abilities & Skills
Energy Ascension
Titan power derives from raising arcane and nature energy into higher-order forms 104.
- Highest-order energies: Time, space, matter—also described as life—and soul. These form distinct but interdependent systems 104.
- Conversion cost: Norgannon gives the example that ten portions of arcane energy may produce only one portion of spatial energy 104.
- Energy reduction: Lowering energy produces larger quantities of lower-order energy, including elemental forms such as Holy Light and shadow 104.
- Power supply: The Well of Eternity compensates for the enormous energy losses involved in ascension while nourishing Azeroth’s World-Soul 104.
Planetary Shaping and Rule Establishment
The Titans use Spiritual Power and multiple forms of energy to reshape planets and establish their operating rules 176.
- Aman’Thul established Azeroth’s rules and defensive framework through his immense Spiritual Power 176.
- Titan spatial research includes traversing, creating, maintaining, stabilizing, and altering space 55.
- Their authority can be delegated, allowing appointed Guardians to operate planetary systems 532 641.
Creation and Engineering
The Titans manufacture artificial servants and construct facilities capable of managing life, energy, and planetary defenses 49 641.
- Titan-forged: Their creations include Earthen, Iron Dwarves, giants, and administrative Guardians 49 584.
- Mixed-energy technology: Their machines use more than arcane energy; Quel’Thalas’s researchers also require nature-energy users to reproduce their workings 709.
- Manufacturing precision: The Sun Seekers can improve arcane golems through study of Mimiron’s machines but cannot yet manufacture Iron Dwarves 709.
Blessings and Authorization
Titan blessings provide both power and permission to control particular systems 532 775.
- Norgannon’s authorization allows Malygos to operate facilities reserved for the Aspect of the Blue 532.
- Elune grants Patrick access to all Titan facilities on Azeroth 656.
- The Dragon Aspects’ blessings retain fragments of the Titans’ will. The earth blessing rejects the fallen Neltharion and responds to Thrall during the battle against Deathwing 769.
- Authorization and energy are separable: during the Aspects’ restoration, the Pantheon supplies authorization while Azeroth’s ley lines channel the replenishing power 775.
Limits and Vulnerabilities
- Old God corruption: Even metallic Titan bodies can be transformed into flesh and controlled. Titan research does not fully explain the assimilation process 654.
- Imperfect containment: Aman’Thul’s seals cannot entirely prevent true-god-level Old Gods from leaking influence, particularly through Ulduar’s monitoring connection 535.
- Temporal limits: Even Aman’Thul cannot completely control the time of every individual thing on Azeroth 773.
- Local authority: Authority granted over Azeroth does not necessarily function elsewhere. Neltharion loses that advantage on Draenor 842.
- Uncertain rank: An early account places the Titans at the False God level. Patrick later conjectures that Aman’Thul may have reached True God while other Titans remain below it; this is presented as his assessment rather than a confirmed collective rank 152 654.
Facilities & Artifacts
| Facility / Artifact | Function |
|---|---|
| Well of Eternity | Draws arcane and nature energy from the Twisting Nether, nourishing Elune and supplying Azeroth’s systems 81 104. |
| Ley Line System | A planetary defensive network. Aman’Thul’s construction is described as preventing even a true god from forcing entry through it 417. |
| Emerald Dream | A Titan installation representing their intended model of Azeroth’s development; connected to reality through Ysera’s authority 641 773 811. |
| Old God seals | Imprison the Old Gods underground and protect Azeroth against further external corruption 535. |
| Ulduar | The Titans’ largest laboratory on Azeroth; develops life-forms and monitors the underground Old God prison 535. |
| Uldaman | Site of Earthen experiments and the repository in which Patrick encounters Norgannon’s image and obtains his discs 44 49 51. |
| Uldum | A laboratory and factory used to study Azeroth’s natural systems; houses the World Reorigination Device in the Halls of Origination 669 736. |
| Discs of Norgannon | Titan-made repositories of arcane knowledge and spell inscriptions; also contain concentrated Titan power and can serve as energy sources 51 54 100. |
| Ulduar’s History Disc | An archival repository containing records of Titan activities and preliminary research into the Old Gods 644 654. |
| Blue Child and White Lady | Azeroth’s twin moons; used to transmit requests to the Pantheon during the restoration of the Dragon Aspects 775. |
Reorigination Protocol
The death of a laboratory’s highest administrator triggers a distress signal to the Pantheon, which dispatches Algalon the Observer to inspect the planet 6.
| Result | Meaning | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Code Alpha | The planet remains broadly consistent with the Titans’ intended development 6. | Reorigination is unnecessary 6. |
| Code Omega | The planet has developed serious problems and deviated from the Titans’ plan 6. | Planetary reshaping destroys existing life so development can begin again 6. |
- Loken’s death activates Azeroth’s inspection protocol 641.
- Patrick persuades Algalon not to transmit the reorigination command 669.
- The actual Reorigination Device is in Uldum, not Ulduar, making its protection a separate priority 669 675.
Relationships
- Old Gods — The same underlying race as the Titans, not a separate opposing species. Their principal differences are metallic versus organic bodies and conflicting beliefs about assimilating other planets. Some Old Gods share the Titans’ refusal to assimilate worlds 732.
- Dragon Aspects — Appointed protectors of Azeroth who receive portions of Titan power and authority over its systems 55 641.
- Titan Keepers and Guardians — Created administrators, soldiers, and custodians. Their authority makes them formidable within Titan installations, but corruption can strip them of their blessings and operating privileges 584 637.
- Patrick — Student and beneficiary of Titan knowledge who nevertheless rejects the idea that creators determine the meaning of mortal lives. Norgannon and Aman’Thul later directly entrust him with power and records 517 814.
- Azeroth’s inhabitants — Live within the world the Titans shaped, but their survival can conflict with both reorigination and a Titan’s natural birth 6 643.
Story Role / Major Arcs
